ELEVATOR AND SEPARATOR FOR MILLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,813, dated December 18, 1888.

Be it known that I, JOHN R. BEYNON, of \Vatertown, in the county of Jefferson, and in the' State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elevators and Separators for Mills; and I do hereby de-- clare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to the art of milling;
IQ and it consists in certain mechanism, which will be more fully described hereinafter, for elevating and at the same time separating the dust from grain, as well as for separating germ stock from middlings.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section on line 1 1 of Fig. Fig. 2 is a cross-section looking up on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the well of the main receptacle. Fig. i is a section on line I a of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a section on line 5 5 of Fig. 1.
A is a hopper-shaped receptacle, which by an opening, a, leads into a casing, B, containing a fan, 0, and having a delivery-spout, D.
At the lower end of the receptacle A is a well,
E, having an outlet, 77, which may have a suitable closing-valve, Z), and an inclined delivery-guard, a, a tongi'le, (I, of which extends out through the outlet 0 to form a kind of apron. The bottom of the well E has a hole through it, into which is fitted the lower end of an air-tube, F, which is overhung by a conical cap, f, a space being left between the upper end of the tube and the lower rim of the cap for the entrance of air to the receptacle A above.
, To regulate the admission of air to the tube F, I provide a disk, G, having a screw-tln'caded stem, g, that fits in a screw-threaded boss of a brace-strap, II, that is secured at each end to an extension of the walls of the well E.
Extending from the top to within ashort distance of the slanting bottom of the receptacle A is a partition, I, and at the top of the wall of receptacle A adjacent to the partition I is a slot, 71, that leads into a liue,'K, that extends downward from the slot 71, and aslot, L, opens from the line K into a side hopper, M, which contains a supplementary hopper,
m. The partition I has a gate, I, that swings from its lower end on a horizontal hinge-rod,
i, which partition extends from one side to the other of the receptacle A, and the hingerod 1' extends out at one side to receive a crank, q, the end of which slides over a curved 5 5 plate, R, on which is a scale. A bolt, 3, and nut s confine the crank-arm to the plate R, the bolt sliding in a slot in the plate, and as the hinge members of the gate 1' are keyed to the hinge-rod the gate maybe adjusted by turning the crank-arm, which secured in adjustment by tightening the nut s. The inner wall of hopper m slants from its top toward the outer wall, which is provided with a valve, N, from which projects a handle, a, 6 5 into the perforated end of a spindle, 0, on the upper part of which is a spring, p, which is confined between the outer wall of the hopper M and a nut, P, so that the valve can be opened or closed to regulate the feed by screwing the nut in or out.
It is very necessary to the perfect operation of my device that as little air as possible shall enter the flue K through the supplementary hopper m and therefore I surround the latter by an elastic tube, 0, which prevents the passage of air through thesides of the opening between the valve N and hopper, and this also serves to close the valve when released by the spindle 0.
The operation of my device is as follows: Suppose, for instance, that it is to be used as an elevator for wheat. The bottom of tube F is closed by screwing the disk G tightly up against it. The fan is started and the wheat is spouted into supplementary hopper m, from whence it falls through hopper M to fine K, where the current from fan 0 takes it and carries it up through sloth, over the adjacent wall of receptacle A, from, whence it falls between the wall and partition I and down into well E, from whence it passes out through outlet 11, while the chaff and light particles will be carried off by the fan or any other draft attachment. To separate impurities 5 from germ-stock the fan is made to run slower than for wheat, the bottom of tube F is opened and the stock let into the flue K from hoppers m M, when the best quality-of stock being too heavy for the draft will fall down through flue K into a suitable receptacle and the lighter stock will rise with the draft through opening 71, and will then fall down through the space between partition I and. the adjacent wall. of the receptacle A, the second stock or best of the remaining stock falling into the well E and out through outlet I), while a current of air drawn by the tan (1 through tube F will carry oil? the tuzzymaterial. The draft between the wall of reeeptaele A and partition I is regulated by adjusting the gate 1.
Having thus fully deseribed my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to see-lire by Letters Patent, is
1. In a se mratmfor grain, &e., the eombination of a main hopper, a sup ilemental hopper, the latter formed with a valve on one side, means for operating said valve from. the outside of the main hopper, and an elastic tube surrounding the su1)plemental hopper, substantially as set forth.
2. In a separator for grain, &e., the combination of a 'reeeptaele having a depending ehamber or well provided with an outlet-opening, a hooded draft-tube leading up through the ehaniber or well, and a disk adjustal'ily arranged to open or close the tube, substantially as set forth.

In a separator for grain, &e., the combination of a main receptacle provided with a depending chamber or well. having an outletopening, a hooded draft-tube leading up through the ehamber or well, a disk adjustably arranged to open or close the tube, a partition arranged to extend from the top of the receptacle to within a certain distance of its bottom, a flue eommunieating at its upper end with the passage formed by the partition and adjaeent wall of said. reeeptael e, a hopper arranged to have a direet outlet into the fine, and a fan eonnnunieating with the reeept'aele, substantially as set forth.
