CURB-STOP.
SPECIFICA'IION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,733, dated December 18, 1888.
Application fi1ed J'n1y 17, 1888- Seria.l No. 280,175. 1T0 model.)
J orm ILLINGXVORTII, citizens of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Esscx and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and usefu1 Improvements in Curb-Stops; and we do hereby declare the fol- 1owing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Wi1l enable others skilled in the art t0 which it appertains to make anduse the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to IJI'OVCG a more durab1e and inexpensive curb-stop; and it consists in the improved curb-stop and in the arrangements and combinations of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter set forth,
and finally en1bodied in the claim.
ures, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the im proxed device. Fig. 2 is asection of the Same, taken on line x. Fig. 3 is an elevation of a key for turning on and off t11e water through the supply-pipe. Fig. 4isasection on line y,
and Fig. 5 is a detail plan of a cap for cover-j ingthe upper end of the device.
In saiddrawings, aindicates a stop-cock in a pipe, b, leading from the street-main to the house-faucets in the ordinary manner, said cock being of the usual construction, With the exception hereinafter notcd, and 12' indicates a box extending "ertically in the ground to the surface thereof, and adapted to allow a key, 0, to be b1ought into engagement with said cock, whereby the water passing through the supp1y -pipe may be turned off or turned on, and thus aiect the supply in the house. The said box 1) is of pecu1iar construction, whereby it may be built at a reduced cost of construction, and be enabled to withstand the effect of frost, and will also be adapted to prevent the cntrance of water &c., at its upper end, which Would tend 1:0 fill the box, and, reezing, to prevent the insertion of the key to the cock. T0 this end the base of the box is made of a single casting of meta1, cl,longitudinally sotted as at 6, to allow the passage of the supply pipe or cock ca therei thrughand to a11owof a longitudinal move ment of the box under the effect of tbe frost, without at the same time moving the suppiy pipe or cock.
Heretofore in certain cases the stop-cock has been rigidly secured 01 connected to the box, so that when the box was raised by the held in the ground, to be disconnected there from, so as to break the pipe and cause a 1eakage and entail a very considerablc cxpense for repairing.
In the in1proved device the casting is al- 1owed to s1ide on the supply pipe or cock. T0 ho1d the cock and box in proper relative position, the 1atter is provided With shoulders f f, Fig. 2, Which engages suitable ways, f f, formed on the casting. By this construction the cock is also given a hearing on the said casting, so that in turning the spigot 01 va1ve there is no danger of breaking the suppIypipe;or causing a rupture at the joint between thel pipe and the cock should said spigot be coniecorroded and be held "ery firmly in the cock.
At the bottom of the casting the same is provided with lateraiiyextending flanges h 71, which present at the 1ower extreinity of the box a broad bearing to engage the ground and prevent the box from being forced downward therein should the upper end be struck inachertently or otherwise, and by being thus forced downward breakingthe supply pipe or cock.
At the upper end of the casting the same serves as a co11ar or s1eeve, 2", for a wroughtiron or other pipe, j. Said sleeve may be pro- Vided With a female thread to receive a male thread on the said pipe j; or, and preferably,
casting operation, and the said casting is cast around said pipe, forming a very permanent and impervious joint, into which no water can penetrate. Shoulders 713 are for1ned at 01 near the union of the two parts, which co operate With the flanges h 72 in preventing the box rom being drawn up out of the ground.
At the upper end of the box the same is provided With a cap, Z, of metal, and prefer ably of brass. The said cap being screwed 0n frost the pipe or cock was either caused to rise with it, or if the said pipe was fir1nly,
the said pipe j is placed in the 1no1d in the
