UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PERCY FRENCH JAMIESON, OF BATAVIA, OHIO.
TELEGRAPHY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,697, dated December 18, 1888.
Application filed September 24, 1888. Serial No. 286,158. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, PERCY FRENCH JAMIE- SON, of Batavia, in the county of Olermont and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Telegraphy, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved telegraph-key, showing the relay, battery, and sounder diagrammatically; and Fig. 2 is a front elevation of my improved telegraph-key, partly in section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
The object of my invention is to provide a telegraph system in which the key used in sending messages will automatically close the circuit as soon as released by the operator, thereby avoiding the necessity of switches and the inconvenience arising from leaving the line open.
My invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts, as will be hereinafte fully described and specifically claimed.
In carrying out my invention I employ a key similar to an ordinary telegraph-key, but arranged to make and break the circuit on the back contact, so that the circuit is always closed for the spaces and opened for the i11- tervals representing the dots and dashes ot' the signal or character, and I connect there with relays in which the electrical contact is removed from the front of the relay-arm to the rear thereof, so that when the circuit is opened by the key it is closed by the relay, thereby giving in the local circuit impulses which cause the message to be delivered direct by the sounder.
The key-lever A is provided with a trunnion, B, which turns in bearings in the screws a b, the bearing in the screw a being of insulating material to prevent the current from passing throi'igh the said screw to the key. The key carries, forward of the trunnion, a contact-piece, c, of insulatingmaterial, which strikes upon the ordinary anvil, (Z, when the key is depressed. The rear end of the key A is provided with an electrical contactscrew, e, which is capable of striking the anvil f.
The base C of the key supports the ears g g, in which are inserted the screws a b, the said ears being insulated from the base. The leg I) communicates electrically with the base C. The leg I) is insulated from the base C and is connected electrically with the ear g by the conductor h,
The relay E, which is placed in the line-circuit, is of the usual construction, with the exception of the replacement of the front contact with a plug, i, of insulating material, and arranging the electrical contact j with the back of the armature-lever K. The local sounder F is also of the usual construction, and is connected with the local battery G and relay E in the usual way. The leg D of the key is connected with the line-wire H, and one terminal of the relay E is connected with the ground or with a return-wire. The spring Zis electrically insulated from the key, and the bearings of the trunnions of the key are preferably made of insulating material. \Vhen the key is depressed, the line-circuit is broken between the contact-screw e and anvil f, thus allowing the armature-lever K of the relay to fall back and complete the local circuit, causing the sounder F to make a downstroke. When the key is released, the spring Z raises the forward end thereof and brings the screw 6 into contact with the anvil f, thus completing the local circuit and causing the armature-lever K of the relay E to be drawn forward, breaking the local circuit, and thus permitting the sounder F to make a back-stroke.
Having 111 ns described my in vention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination, with the base t, having forward and rear anvils, d f, the legs D D, the latter leg being insulated from the base, and ears g g, insulated from the base and prox'ided with screws a b, and the conductor 72, leading from ear g to the leg D, of the key-levers A, having trunnions B journaled in the said screws and insulated from the screw (1, the forward eontact-piece,c, of insulatin g material, the electrical contact screw 6 at the rear end of the lever, and the spring Z between the key and base and insulated from the key, substantially as set forth.
2. A telegraph system consisting in a key comprising a. base, 0, having front and rear anvils, d f, the legs D D, the latter being insulated from the base, the ears g g, insulated from the base and provided With screws a b, the former having an insulating-bearing", the conductor h, leading from ear g to leg D,
the key-lever A, having trunnions B jour naled in the screw-bearings, the forward contact-piece, c, of insulating material, the electrical contact-screw c at the rear end of the IQ lever, the insulated spring I, the relay E, hav-
