B. A. HARRIS. BRBEQH LOADING FIRE ARM.
Patented Dec. 18,. 1888.
INVBNTOR UNITED STATES PATENT .OFFICE.
ELMORE ADELBERT HARRIS, OF NORVICH, CONNECTICUT.
BREECH-ILOADING FIRE-AR SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,691, dated December 18, 1888.
Application filed January 5,
To all whom it nwy concern:
Be it known that I, ELMORE ADELBERT HAR- RIS, of Norwich, in the county of Chenango and State of New York, have invented a new' and Improved Breech-Loading Fire-Arm, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to breech-loading lire-arms, the object of the invention being to simplify the construction of such arms in the matter of the connection of the barrel with the stock and the arrangement of the extractors Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side View of a portion of a f 26, which is normally forced forward by a gun constructed in accordance with the terms of my invention, the locks, however, not being shown in the view. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view taken on line as .r ofFig. 1. 3 is a view of the arm as it appears when the breech is unlocked and depressed to bring the extractors into play. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line y y of Fig. 1,looking toward the muzzle of the gun; and Fig. 5 is a similar view looking toward the stock of the gun.
The barrels of the fire-arm forming the subjectanatter of this application are placed the one above the other, there being two rifled barrels, two shot-barrels, or a rifled barrel and a shot-barrel, as shown in the drawings, the barrel 10 being a rifled barrel and ll being a shot-barrel. From each side of the web by which these barrels 10 and 11 are connected there extends a trunnion, 12, and these trunnions rest in horizontal slots 13, that are formed in side plates, 1;, which constitute a portion of the stock 15.
Just in advance of the plates l-l, I arrange other plates, 16, which have rearwardly-extending lips 17, that overlap the forward ends of the plates 1a, which forward-plate ends are circular, but are formed with a shoulder, 18, a corresponding shoulder, 19, being formed on the plates 16, the arrangement being such that the two shoulders abut when the barrels are thrown to the position in which they are 1888. $erialNo.259,886- (Nomodeh) W shown in Fig. 3, thus limiting the oscillation of the barrels.
Through the web by which the barrels 10 and 11 are united I form a longitudinal bore, 20, in which there is mounted the shank 21 of an extractor, 22, the forward end this shank abutting against a transverse bar, 22, which extends through a slot, 2%, that is formed in the web and carries plates 23. The upper forward corners of the plate 23 are slightly cut away in order that they may be borne upon by the cam-faces 25 of the rearwardlyextending hooked ends of the plates 14, so that as the barrels are moved to the position in which they are shown in 3 the ex tractor will be forced outward and to the rear. Above the cam-face 25 of the plates lat is 2. lug, 25,which lugs, comingto abearing on the plates 23, form stops coacting with the stops 18.
Through the stock 15, I insert a locking-dog,
spring, 27, that is coiled about its shank 28, said shank extending to the rear, there to be connected to a thumb-piece, 29. Notches 30 are formed in the butt of the web between the barrels, said notches being arranged for the reception of the teeth 31 of the locking dog 26. In order that the dog may act automatically to lock the barrels to position, I incline the upper faces of its teeth, and consequently when 'the barrels are thrown to the position in which they are shown in Fig. 1 the dog will be forced backward until the notches 30 come in register with the teeth, after which thespring 27 will act to force the dog forward and the teeth will engage said notches. v
The firing-pins, the heads of which are shown at 33, are arranged in diagonal apertures formed in the stock, the one extending upward toward the axis of the barrel 10,while the other extends downward toward the axis of the barrel 11, the arrangement being such that the parts are stored in an exceedingly compact manner.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a stock provided with forwardly-extending side plates adapted to receive the pivots of the barrels, of two ver 'ticallyaligning gun-barrels provided with side trunnions centrally ot' the vertical line of the two barrels, substantially as set forth.
The combination, with a pair of gun-ban rels mounted the one above the other and provided with side plates, one on each side, and
with two trunnions, one on each side, of it stock provided with forwardly extending passing beneath the side plates of the barrel, 5 trunnions which rest in recesses formed in the side plates of the stock, an extractor, plates carried by a transverse bar against which the record of the case in the Patent Oftice.

cam-faced arms which bear against the plates, substantially as described.
1 1h. The combination, witha pair of gun-barrels mounted the one above the other and pivota-llyconneeted to plates extending from the stock and havingemu-faces 25, of a cross-bar,
I extractor abuts, and rearwardly-extending rels, an extractor mounted between the ends ,& ot' the barrels, provided with a shank abutting; on the said eross-ljmr, and plates 23, carried by the cross-bar, sulistantiall v as shown and described.
