The boxes G and II can all be clipped upon a lower bar of the rear axle, or connected in any other suitable way with the body-frame. The large bevel-gear K is fixed upon the axle and arranged to engage a gear, 2', upon the shaft I, in which way, during the advancement of the machine, the rear axle will be rotated by the rear wheels, and will in turn operate the shaft I through the medium of the intermeshing gears K and i.
The rotary shaft I, which is supported at its rear end in the lateral bearing on the box H, is at its forward end supported from the main frame of the machine by any suitable hanger or brace-support, and carries an ordinary clutch, L, which latter can be operated by a suitably-arranged hand-lever. The shaft I, or one of the clutch-sections, is provided with a suitable sprocket, Z, for the endless chain E, which passes around said sprocket, and also passes around a sprocket that is secured upon the axle or one of the journals of a belt-roller at the upper end of the elevator. In this way, when the two sections or glands of the clutch are in engagement with one another, the endless elevator-belt will be driven from the rear axle. The movable section or gland of the clutch can, if desired, bemade bell-shaped, so as to more effectively exclude dirt, said form, however, being exceedingly old in clutches.
As a further feature of improvement, the upper half of the box H is herein rigid with a stand, M, which can be cast in one piece with the upper half of the box. This stand serves as an exceedingly eflicient connection between the box and the main body-frame, and is also of service where the gear K, in place of being adjacent to the wheel. that is at the side of the machine from which the elevator extends, is arranged toward the opposite wheel, it being observed, in this connection, that since the weight of the extension portion of the elevator is at one side of the machine the driving-power should be taken from the axle at a point toward the opposite side of the machine in order to insure proper balance.
The stand M may comprise either a single bar or may be of the shape herein shown, and, preferably, the driving-gear K is secured to the axle at a point alongside the box H, whereby the axle will at such point have its bearing in a box that is rigidly connected with the main frame through the medium of the stand M.
As a simple way of connecting the rotary axle with the rear wheels during the advancement of the machine, a ribbed sleeve, N, can be driven into each wheel-hub and adapted to form a bearing for the axle. Each one of these sleeves N is at its inner end provided with a flange, n, to which one or more. pawls n can be pivoted. A ratchet, P, is provided for each pair of pawls upon the flange n, and each of said ratchets is in rigid connection with Each ratchet is preferably the rear axle.

Where the driving-gear K is arranged as herein shown, the boxes G can be clipped upon the lower bar, a, of the rear bolster, which may be regarded as a part of the body-frame. For certain purposes, however, of this invention all of the boxes-that is to say, the boxes G and the box Hcou1d be clipped or otherwise secured upon the said lower bar, a, of the bolster. It will also be observed that the box H is provided with a suitable lid or cover, 71 for its lubricant-receptacle h, and that a similar or suitable cover can be provided for closing the opening h to the lubricant-receptacle that is provided for the shaft I. It is also understood that covers can be provided for closing the lubricant-receptacles of the boxes G, which areherein understood to be provided with chambers or receptacles similar to the chamber or receptacle h of the boxH.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a grading and ditching machine, the
axle-box H, constructed with a bearing for the driving-axle, and a lateral extension having a bearing, h, for a rotary shaft which is included in a mechanism for transmitting power from the driving-axle to an endless soil-conveyer belt, said box being provided with a lubricant-chamber, h, adapted to receive cotton waste and opening within the cylindric bearing for the driving-axle, and a lubricant-chamber, 7L2, adapted to receive cotton waste and opening within the cylindric bearing for said rotary shaft, substantially as described.
2; In a grading and ditching machine, the combination, with the body-frame, of the rear axle, F, a box in which said axle has a bearing, and a stand, such as hereinbefore set forth, rigid with the said box and secured to the body-frame, substantially as set forth.
3. In a grading and ditching machine, the combination, with the rear axle, of the rear wheels loose upon said axle, the flanged sleeves N, fitted within the hubs of the rear wheels and carrying pawls, and the ratchets P, rigid with the rear axle, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with the rear axle, which is, supported by and driven from the rear wheels, of a box providing a bearing for the rear axle and rigid with a stand, hi, and the driving-gear K and connection therefrom to the elevator-belt, said gear being secured upon the rear axle at a point alongsidesaid box, substantially as set forth.
