SNOW-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,350, dated December 11, 1888.

.To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRIET LAVINIA FRA- SER, of the city, county, and State ot' New York, have invented a new and Improved Snow-Plow, of which the following is a t'ull, clear, and exact description.
The object oi the invention is to provide a new and improved snow-plow, which is sim ple and durable in construction and very ef fectively removes the snow from railroad tracks.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference to be had to the accompanying' drawings, formingI a part ot' this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding' parts in all the figures.

The improved snow-plow A is provided with a vertical frame, l, on which are pivoted the rods C and C, each having at its end a hook, C2, adapted to pass into a bearing', 1),secured in front of the locomotive I), which serves to push the snow-plow into the snow drift or bank on the railroad-track. Onv the lower end of the trame l5 are mounted to rotate the wheels .l, traveling' onV the t1.'ack-rails, and from the t'ront ot' the said frame B project the rods E', on which are mounted the wheels E2, held in front oli' the wheels E, and also adapted to travel on the track-rails.
The frame B supports at its front the three plow-sections F, G, and H, located one above the other and one in front ot' the other, as is plainly shown in Fig'. l. The lower section, F, is pivotally connected with the frame B and is supported on the axle of the front wheels, E2. The middle section, G, is pivotally connected with the lower section, F, by rods or stays I, and the upper section, ll, is similarly connected with the middle section, G, by rods or stays J. 'l' he middle and upper sections, G and H, are also pivotally connected with the horizontal rods K K, respectively, each provided at its inner end with the two prongs K2 and K, extending in opposite directions, and of which the upper prong, K2, is adapted to rest against the frame B, while the lower prong, K2, is curved and held in a socket, K4, secured to the side of the frame B. This socket K4 is shaped similarly to the prong` K3 and permits a swinging' motion of the re spective rod, K or K.
Instead ot' making the socket K4 as shown in Fig. l. it may be formed as shown in Fig. f-t, in which `it consists of the bracket- K5, secured to the frame B, and of the curved arm K6, pivoted on the said bracket K5. The curved arm K corresponds in shape with the prong K3 and turns with the latter when the rod K or K swings up or down. The upward movement of thesaid rods K or K is limited, however, by the prongl K2 resting' against the frame B, as shown in Fig'. l.
The upper section, H, is connected near its rear end with the chains L,t'ro1n which eX- tend the branch chains L connected with the middle section, G. The chains L run upward and pass over the pulleys L2, mounted in the upper end of a frame, N, mounted to slide vertically in the bearings li and B2, Yformed on the frame B. Bolts N are secured to the frame B and project through vertical slots N3, formed in the said frame N, and nuts N2 screw on the outer ends of the said bolts N and against the said trame N, so as to fasten the latter to the vertical frame .B at any desired place. The cha-ins L pass downward from the pulleys L2 and are wound upon the drum O of a windlass,O,held on the inside of the frame B, being' of any approved construction. By operating the windlass O the chains'L are wound upon and unwound `from .the said drum O, and the plow-sections H and G are raised or lowered correspondingly.
Each plow-section F, G, or H consists, principally, ot' two parts united in their middle by bolts or other suitable means, as shown in Fig'. 2. Each section consists of the lower lianges, F, G, O1' H', which continue into the rearwardly and upwardly extending' parts F2, G2, and H2, from which extend the rearwardly and upwardly projecting tops F3, G3, and H3, respectively. The three parts of each section are V-shaped, having their points in the front and their sides extending rearwardly, as is plainly shown in Fig'. 2. Each IOO plow-section F, G, or His made hollow, so as to form a steam-space, P, into which steam is admitted from the locomotive D, so as to melt the snow passing on top of the respective sections F, G, and H. The locomotive is provided for this purpose with a pipe, Q, extending in front of the boiler and provided with a valve,

and H, is connected by the rods C and C to r the front of the locomotive D, which, when set in motion, pushes the snow-plow into the snow- 2 5 dritt on the railroad-track, whereby the several sections F, G, and H enter the snow in such a manner that the upper section, H,
pushes t-he top layer of the snow-drift to the side of the railroad-track, after which thesec- 3o ond section, G, comes in contact with the middle part of the snow-drift and pushes it to the side, after which the lower section, F, takes the remaining` part of the snow andpushes 4it to the side of the track. Thus the several 3 5 layers ot' snow in the snow-dritt are successively removed, commencing with the top c layer, so that the several sections work successively, each removing its respective layer of snow. Part of the snow passing,` from the sev- 4o eral sections is melted by the steam in the steam-spaces. rl`he steam heats the plow-sections,and hence causes the latter to enter easily into hard-packed snow. It' the snow-drift is not very high, the lower and middle sections,

The several sections can be raised and lowered by actuating` the windlass O, so 5o as to wind the chains L on the drum'Oor unwind them from the same. lVh en the chains Il are unwound from the drum O', the sections H and G swing downward and forward on the stays I and J. This is done in case the snowdrift is not high and the operatordesires to bring' the three sections into activity.
, It will be seen that the sections F, G, and H enter the snow-drift very easily, as the respective flanges F, G, and H are long` and 6o sharp in front, so that the snow easily passes up onto the middle parts, F2, G2, and H2, whichVY deliver the snow to the sides of the railroadtrack. Part of the snow which passes over the middle parts, F2, G2, and H2, and on the tops, F2, G2, and H2, is also delivered by the same to the sides of the track, on account of extending` upward and rearward and to the The v sides ot the track. The lower section, F, eitends but a short distance beyond the sides of the track-rails, as shown in Fig'. but the next section is somewhat wider, and the top section, H, is still wider, as is plainly illustrated in the drawings. The several part-s of the plow can be easily taken apart and disconnected from the locomotive and carried in the baggage-car if not needed for the purpose indicated.
Having thus :fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a snow-plow, the combination, with a frame mounted to travel on a railroad-track, of section-plows F, G, and ll, piif'otally'held in front of the said trame one above the other and one in front of the other, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a snow-plow, the combination, with a frame mounted to tra-vel on a railroad-track, ot the section-plows F, G, and H, held in front of the said 'frame one above the other and one in front of the other, and arms pivoted on the said frame and pivotally connected with the said section-plows, substantially as shown and described.
In a snow-plow, the combination, with a frame mounted to travel on a railroad-track, of the section-plows F, G, and H, held in front of the said frame one above the other and one in front of the other, arms pivoted on the said frame and pivotally connected with the said section-plows, and chains connected with the upper two section-plows, G and H, to raise and lower the same, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a snow-plow, the combination, with a frame mounted to travel on a railroad-track, of the section-plows F, G, and H, held in front of the said frame one above the other and one in front of the other, arms pivoted on the said frame and pivotally connected with the said section-plows, chains connected with the upper two section-plows, G and H, to raise and lower the same, and a windlass held on the said frame and adapted to wind up the said chains, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a snow-plow, the combination, with a frame mounted to travel on a railroad-track, of the section-plows F, G, and H, held in front of the said frame one above the otherand one in front of the other, each of the said sectionplows being,` made hollow to form a steamspace, a steam-pipe connected with one of the sections, and pipes connecting the said section with the other sections, substantially as shown and described.

In a snow-plow, the combination, with a frame mounted to travel on the railroad-track, of the section-plows F, G, and H, held in front of the said frame one above the other and one in front of the other, each oi the said section-plows being made hollow to form a steamspace, a steam-pipe connected with the middle plow-section, G, and ileXible pipes connecting the several steam-spaces with each IOO IIO
other, substantially as shown and described.
7. In a snow-plow, the combination, with a frame mounted to travel on the railroad-track, of the sectionplo\\'s F, G, and H, each provided with a lower flange continuing` into the rearwardly and upwardly extending middle part, which terminates in the rearwardly and upwardl)T extendin top, substantially as shown and described.
8. In a snow-plow, the combination, with the frame B, mouu ted to travel on a rail road-track, of the hollow section-plows F, G, and ll, held in front ot' the said frame one above the other and one in front of the other, the stays l and J, connect-ed with the said section-plows, and the rods K an d K' ,pi votally conn ected with the said frame and with the upper two sectionplows, G and ll, substantially as shown and described.
9. In a snow-plow, the coinliinatiou, with the l rame B, mounted to travel on a railroad-track, of the hollow sectiou-plows F, G, and H, held in front of' the said lranle one above the other and one in front of the other, the stays I and J, connected with the said section-1i)lows,the rods K and K', piviiitally connected with the said frame and with the upper two section-plows, G and H, the chains L L', connected with the said upper section-plows, G and H, and a windlass, O, mounted on the said frame B and connected with the said chains, substantially as shown and described.
10. In a snow-plow, the combination, with the frame B, mounted to travel on a railroad-track, of the hollow sectionplows F, G, and H, held in front ot the said frame one above the other and one in front of the other, the stays I and J, connected with the said section-plows, the rods K and K', pivotally connected with the said frame and with the upper two section plows, G and II, the chains L L', connected with the upper sectioirplows, G and H, the win dlass C), mounted on the said frame B and connected with the said chains, and the frame N, held vertically adjustable on the said frame B and provided with pulleys over which the said chains pass.
