SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,943, dated December 4, 1888.

Be it known that I, JOHN H. VAILE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam Pumping-Engines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to' that class of pumping-engines in which the piston-rod is connected to the valve-rod in such manner that the play or throw of the former actuates the latter to operate the valve to reverse the flow of steam to and from the ends of the piston.
It has for its obj ect the improvement in the construction of this class of engines whereby simplicity of construction an d adjustment are obtained.
The novelty of my invention will be herein set forth, and distinctly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, Sheet 1, is a sectional side elevation of so much of a steam pumping-engine as is necessary to illustrate the application of my invention. 2, Sheet 2, is an enlarged side elevation of the sliding tappet, a portion of its actuating-link, and a portion of the valve-rod. Fig. 3, Sheet 2, is an axial plan of the sliding tappet and connected parts through the dotted line '00 0c of Fig. 2. Fig. 4, Sheet 2, is an end elevation of the tappet from the dotted line y y of Fig. 2 with the adjustable sleeve on that side removed. Fig. 5, Sheet 3, is an enlarged side elevation of a portion of the valverod, tappet, and actuating-link, representing a modification in the adjustable parts. Fig. 6, Sheet 3, is an axial plan of the adjustable collar through the dotted line .2 z of Fig. 5. Fig. 7, Sheet 3, is an outside end elevation of the adjustable collar. I11 describing the engine, which may be of the usual or any suitableconstruction, it is only necessary, referring to Fig. 1, to say that A is the steam-cylinder; B, its piston; C, the piston-rod; D, thevalve-chest; E, the valve; F, the valve-rod; G, the tappet sliding upon the valve-rod between suitable tappet projections-in this instance, collars H, suitably fastened to the rod; and l, the link connecting the tappet G and the upper end of the lever J, pivoted as at a, and having its lower end connected to the piston -rod C-in this instance by the cross-head or collar K upon the rod C and the pivoted link L.
Under one form of myinvention illustrated by Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4., the collars Hare rigidly secured to the valve-rod F, so as not to be adjustable thereon, while the features of adjustment are connected to and form part of the sliding tappet G in the following manner;
The interior bore of the tappet-head P is threaded to receive at each end externallythreaded sleeves M with nut-shaped projecting ends, as shown, and which sleeves have bores snugly fitting upon the valve-rod F. By screwing the sleeves M in or out of the tappet-head P the proper adjustment of the tappet-surfaces can be always and simply regulated. To hold the sleeves M from turning when adjusted, and to thereby securely lock them in place, the tappet-head has its proj ecting ends I) tapered and threaded exteriorly to form, practically, nuts, with reference to the sleeves M; and to enable the nuts thus formed to be clamped down tight upon the sleeves'M when the latter are adjusted the nuts are provided with as many slots cin this instance four and quartering-as will permit the portions so severed to yield or give when the locking-nuts N with tapering threaded bores are screwed up on the slotted portions of the nuts formed by the portions 1). In this way the sleeves M can be securely locked when adjusted by screwing up the nuts N, and can be adjusted by unscrewing the nuts N and unscrewing or screwing up the sleeve M, as will be readily understood. The same result may be accomplished by dispensing with the threaded ends I) of the tappet-head and substituting for the nuts N ordinary jam-nuts, R, upon the sleeves M, as in Fig. 8, where a single collar, H, is employed and confined ina recess within the tappet-head, as will be readily understood. Instead of obtaining this adjustment in the tappet-head itself, the same advantages and simplicity of construction may be obtained as in Figs. 5, t3, and 7 by employing the usual sliding tappet-head and applying the feature of the split adjustable nuts to the valve-rod to take the place of the stationary collars II. In such event the valve-rod is threaded for a portion of its length on each side of the tappet-head, and has screwed on each of such threaded portions nuts (),with exteriorly-tapering threaded and split portions 1) to receive the lockingnuts N, and by which the nuts are securely locked to the valve-rod in any of their adjusted portions.
