TRACE-CARRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,330, dated November 20, 1888.
Application filed August 15, 1888. Serial No. 282,797. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK M. FRIEGEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sugar Creek, in the county of Hancock and 5 State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenings for Harness; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in fastenings and trace-carriers for harness, by means of which the back and hip straps are connected, and by which the traces or tugs are carried when u'nhitched, and when the harness is either on or off the animal. The objects of my invention, in brief, are, first, to provide a removable fastening by which the back-strap, crupper-strap,and two hip-straps may be connected and held firmly together without sewing or riveting them to the fastening, or without uniting them by stitches or other equivalent means, and whereby any of the several straps may be quickly removedand replaced independently of the others, to thereby permit a defective strap to be readily removed and mended or replaced by a perfect one without displacing or disturbing the other straps, 0 which is a great desideratum, as it permits an inexperienced person to remove a strap, should it become broken, and attach a new one or otherwise correct the defect; second, to combine with said fastening a removable and ad- 5 justable trace-carrier (or a series of them) so constructed that the trace or traces when unhitched maybe quickly engaged therewith and securely held in place thereby, and of such construction that either a ring, link, or hook 4.0 upon the end of the trace may be as readily engaged with said carrier, and whereby said carriers may be quickly removed if it is not desired to use them, the same being simple, durable, and effective.
With these objects in view theinvention consists in the special construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of the strap-fastening and trace-carrier for harness, substantially as hereinafter described.
Figure 1 represents in plan view a strapfastening and tracecarrier combined, constructed in accordance with my invention, the fastening being shown as connecting the back, hip, and crupper straps of a harness; Fig. 2, 5 a vertical diagonal section of the same taken on dotted line mm, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a plan view of the lower plate, showing the straps in dotted lines, the protector and upper plate and trace-carrier being removed; Fig. 4, a plan view of the trace-carrier as removed from the fastening, it showing the hook to which the trace is connected as turned to a horizontal position; and Fig. 5, a front elevation of the same.
The strap-fastening consists of the two parts A B, one of which, A, overlaps and the other of which, E, underlaps the straps a, which straps are the back, hip, and crupper straps of the harness. The lower part, B, of the fastening has a series of upwardly-projecting pins or lugs, b, which extend through perforations in the different straps a, and has also an upwardly-projecting screw-threaded central lug,
c, which extends upwardly between the ends of said straps, said upwardly-projecting lug 0' being engaged by the walls of ascrew-threaded central opening in the upper part, A, of the fastening. This under part will preferably be constructed of cast metal and circular in form, with thelugs castintegral therewith. The upper part, A, which will preferably be of the same shape and material as the lower part,is dish-shapedthat is,it has an annular downwardly-projecting flange, a",which bears upon the straps a when screwed down. This upper part, A, has a series of openings, 0, formed by a series of ribs, 0 which ribs are aligned with the upper surface of said part A, thus leaving a space between them and the 0 straps a, so as to allow the insertion of the trace-carrier O, as hereinafter set forth. The rim of said upper part is ribbed or corrugated, (or otherwise ornamented,) as shown in the drawings.
The trace-carrier G, which interlocks below the ribs 0 of the upper part, A, of the fastening, is stepped or cut away at its rear end, as shown in Fig. 2, and has an upwardly-projecting boss, d, at its forward end, which boss is grooved to admit the entrance of the end of the swivel-hook E,whieh hook is pivotally secured to the lower forward end of the said trace-carrier. As will be seen by the drawings, this trace-carrier can be readily removed, if desired, and a series of them can be used.
Direct contact between the fastener and the animals back and any consequent soreness which might arise therefrom is prevented by the shield S, of common form, which is sewed to the back-strap at a, and extends backward between the animal and the metal fastener, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The strap fastening consisting of the lower plate, B, having a series of upwardly projecting pin s,b,and a central screw-threaded pin or lug, 0, east integral therewith, and the upper plate, A, having the central screwthreaded hole and the an nnlar flange a to bear upon the straps, which are inserted between the two plates and engaged by the pins 1/ of the lower plate, I), and having the radial ribs a and intermediate trace carrierreceiving openings 0, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
2. In a strap-fastening having a lower plate provided with pins to engage the strap, the upper plate, A, having the downwardly-projecting annular flange a and a series of openings, G, in its web, in combination with a trace-carrier overlapping the outer edge of the plate A and extending through the openings G and bearing against the under face of the web of the plate A, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a strap-fastener for harness having a bottom and top plate adjustably secured together, the trace-carrier O, removably engaging the top plate and having the swivel-hook E pivotally connected therewith, substantiall y as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK M. FRIEGEL.
