H. B. CAMPBELL.
MERCHANDISE TRUGK.
Nov. 20, 1888.
UNITED STATES PATENT Fries.
HOMER B. CAMPBELL, OF RACINE, VVISOONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO THE SHAW MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
MERCHANDISE-TRUCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,293, dated November 20, 1888.
' Application filed May 7, 1888. Serial No. 273,088. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HOMER B. CAMPBELL, of Racine, in the county of Racine, and in the State of \Viscousin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Merchandise- Trucks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to trucks for handling goodssuch as barrels, boxes, &c.-and will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section on line 1 1, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a plan view partly broken away; Fig. 3, a detail side elevation; Fig. 4, a section on line44, Fig. 1; and Fig. 5, a similar view showing another form of the rack-gear employcd in my device.
The main portion of my truck is provided with rear wheels, a a, and thcbolster that supports the axle I) of these wheels joins the side timbers A at the rear end, and each of these side timbers is channeled at c to receive tongues on the side timbers B of an elevator, O, the under sides of which side timbers B are formed with rack-teeth d, or these timbers may have rack-bars attached to them.
A shaft, D, is journaled at each end to one of the side timbers A, and this shaft carries two pinions, E E, the teeth of which mesh with the teeth (I on the under side of timbers B, so that when the shaft D is turned the pinions will raise or lower the elevator.
A pawl and ratchet, F G, may be used to turn the shaft-D, or a simple crank-arm may be used for the purpose.
The elevator and truck may each be provided with flange H, for the usual purpose. If desired, only one rack and pinion may be used.
Having thus fully described my invention,
' what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a truck, the combination of a main frame having channeled sides, an elevator having its side timbers provided with tongues to engage the channels in the main frame, and means, substantially as described, for raising and lowering the elevator, as set forth.
2. In a truck, the combination of a main frame, a crank-shaft journaled in the side tinibers thereof, a pinion fast on the shaft,-au clevator arranged within said main frame, and a rack carried by said elevator to engage the pinion, substantially as set forth.
3. In a truck, the combination of a main frame, an elevator arranged therein and hav ing the undersides of its side timbers pro vided with rack-teeth, a crank-shaftjournaled in the side timbers of said main frame, and pinions fast on the'shaft to engage said racktceth, substantially as set forth.
4. In a truck, the combination of a main frame, an elevator arranged therein, a crankshaft journaled in the side timbers of the main frame, a rack-andpinion gear connecting the shaft and elevator, a ratchet fast on said shaft, and a pawl arranged to engage said ratchet, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Racine, in the county of. Racine and State of \Visconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
HOMER B. CAMPBELL.
