srncmca'rron forming part Orr-eaters lPatent No. 39 ,012, dated November 20, 1888.
Application filed January 17, 1988. Serial l lo. 26ll05'l. (No model.) Patented in England J one 10. 1887, No. 8,396.
To all wine m) it-may concern.-
" {Be't known that 1, AUGUs'rUsJoHN MAR- QUAND, a subject of theQueen of Great Britain, and residing at Bute Docks, Cardiff-in the county of Glamorgan, England, engineer,
' have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electrical Apparatus for Pre- Qventing Corrosion or Incrustation of Steam- Boilers'and other Similar Vessels and for Beniovingthe Incrustation when Once Formed,
(for which. I have obtained a patent in Great.
Britain, No. 8,396, hearing date June 10, 1887,)
of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved apparatus. for applying electricity to steam-boilers "and othersirnilarvessels for the purposes of preventing the formation; of incrustation, of
' removing it if already formed, and also of pre enting corrosion or'pitting of the internal surfaces; v
According-to my-invention the terminal bf an electric generator corresponding with the :zinc plate of a battery is electrically connected in any convenientway, and either directly or indirectly with the shell, while the terminal correcorrosion of the inner surfaces of the shell will be increased, but that if the electricity be applied according to my present invention 'cor- "rojs'ion-cannot and does not take place; and,.as
it is generally believed that my method of applying an elwtrical current to a boiler will not prevent i'ncrustatiou, I wish it to be'distinctly understood that experience with my invention proves that iucrustation already formed will be removed by it and itsreadherence effectually prevented.
Figure 1 is a detail sectional elevation illustrating the construction of my improved appaiatus and its connection to the boiler-shell.
Fig. 2 is an elevation illustrating the applica-; tion elf my invention to a marine boiler. Fig.
3 is a -diagramelevation illustrating the application of my invention to a land boiler. Fig. 4 is a detail.
Referring to Fig. 1, A is the shcllof the boiler, electrically connected to the "negative pole of the battery. B is the conductor. This maybe a metal knob; but I prefer to use a perforated box of any conveni'eu'tsection, which is filled with zinc. G is a ferrule screwed into the boiler-shell, and D is an eificient insulation fixed inside the ferrule and covering both ends of it by means of flanges or washers d d. E is a stud, to the end of which the conductor is securelyattached in any convenient way. [Ihe stud is passed through the ferrule, from which both it and the conductor are, however, insulated, as shown. A'nut, e, on the outer and screwed end of thestudis provided for the purpose of fixing the conductor firmly in its position. F is the lead from the positive pole of the battery coupled to theouter endof the stud E. G is a cap having a perforation, f, (through which the positive lead'is taken,) adapted to screw onto the ferrule for the purpose of protecting those parts of the appara-' tus which it covers from being inj nred.
Referring to Fig. 2, His a marine boiler, and B the conductor, constructed as described above. I is the battery, carried bya metalbracket, '13,- which is bolted to the boiler-shell. K is the lead from the negative pole of the battery to the metal plate 13, by which the boilershell is electrically connected to the said pole. L is the lead from the positive pole of the battery to the conductor B.
Fig.3 is a diagram illustrating the abovedescribed single-lead method of applying my invention to a land boiler. M is a pipe connected to the boiler, and m a clip suspended therefrom. The battery I is carried by the clip m, and the negative pole is electrically connected'to the clip m and through it to the .boiler shell N by the lead n. L is the lead from the positive pole of the battery to the conductor B. O is an indicator introduced 9 5 into the circuit anywhere along the lead L. I do not confine myself to any particular type-of indicator, but may use any that is ca- ;pable of indicating the existence of .an electrical current as well as the direction in which 100 it is flowing.
A' modified and preferable method of con necting the negative pole of the battery with the boiler-shell is illustrated in Fig. 4, which illustrates a battery adapted to be suspended from a pipe attached to the boiler in the same 5 way as illustrated in Fig. 3, described therewith.
Instead of using a wire lead, n, from the teries, circuits, or conductors I make use of,
inasmuch as these may be varied according to convenience. If more than one apparatus. be used onone boiler, they may be coupled up in 20 series, if preferred.
I claim i 1. The combination of boiler-shell, metal bracket riveted thereto, and a battery carried thereby,-the negative pole of which is 25 electrically connected direct to said bracket,
the negative pole of the said battery being conan electrical conductor fixed to the boilershell, insulated therefrom, .and in electrical contact with the water in the said boiler, and a wire leadfrom the positive pole to the said conductor, as set forth. 0
2. Theaco'mbination of boilershell, metal clip adapted to support abattery and to hem suspended from a pipe leading from the boiler,
nected direct to the said clip, an electrical conduetor fixed to theboiler-shelhinsulated therefrom, and in electricalcontact with the water in the said boiler, and a wire lead from .the positive pole to said conductor, as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my 40 hand this 21st day of November, 1887.
AUGUSTUS JOHN MARQUAND.
