.-In Fig. 5 is represented a device which is secured on the under side of the shafts, and is employed for the purpose of automatically releasing the holdback-strap when the traces are released. The device consists of a plate, J, perforated at or near its ends for the passage of the securingbolts Formed integral with this plate near its forward end is a hook, K, which projects rearwardly and downwardly, as shown. Formed on this plate immediately to the rear of the hook K are two ears, jj, between which is pivote'd a depending jaw, L, whichis kept pressed normally forward against the end of the hook K by means of a flat spring, M, the free end of which presses against a thumb, m, formed on thev said jaw L. The adjacent portions of the hook K and jawL are preferably slightly beveled, as shown, to facilitate the insertion of the ring of the hold back-strap.

It will bc observed that when the traces are released andthe animal moves forward the dcpendi'ng jaw Lwill be forced open, and the holdback-strap released also.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

`1. The combination of thc singletree and ferrules, the said ferrules being slotted, as described, and the cuffs E on the ends of ferrules, the bushings b,inserted in the ends of ferrules, the springactuated bolts D, the pins D', attached to the said bolts and extending through the slots in thc ferrules, the spring-catches adapted to engage with the lug f on ferrnles, and the operatinglcords, substantially as dcscribed.

2. The combination, with the singletree, ferrules placed on the ends thereof, the said ferthe bushings b, the cuffs E on ends of ferrules, the springactuated trace-bolts D, the pins D', the spring-catches adapted to engage the lugs f', the operating-cords, and the slotted caps vH, slotted at their inner ends, substantially-as described.
