Be it known that I, HANS G. BLoM, a eitizen of the United States, residing at Vatson, in the county of Chippewa and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fanning-Mills, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in fanning-mills; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1. is a side elevation of a fanning-mill embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal eentralscctional view of the same. Fig. 3 is partly a top plan view and partly a horizontal sectional view taken on the line a: m of Fig. 1. Fig. 1: is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 9 y of Fig. 2.
A represents a vertical rectangular supporting-frame, on the upper side of which at one end is a hopper, 13. On one end of the frame and in proximity to the hopper is a semi-cylindrical inclosing-casc, 0, having openings D through its ends.
E representsarotary fan or blower, the shaft of which is arranged in the axis of the case 0 and is journaled in suitable hearings on the frame A. One end of the said shaft has a pinion, F, and said shaft is provided near its ends with eccentrics G.
H represents a vibratory shoe, which is arranged in the upper portion of the frame, has one end arranged under the discharge-opening in the bottom of the hopper and providedwith a feed-board, I, and said shoe is provided at its corners with depending resilient vertical standards K, the lower ends of which are pivoted to the sides of the frame at a suitable elevation by means of bolts L. Arranged in the upper side of the vibratory shoe is a coarse downwardly-inclined screen, M, and arranged below the said screen M and inclined in the same direction is a fine screen, N. The bottom of the shoe is formed by a board, 0, which inclines in the opposite direction to the screens.
At the lower front side of the fan-case G is pivoted or hinged the outer edge of a blastdeflector, I. The inner edge of the said blastdefiector extends over the bottom 0 of the shoec R represents a cord, which is attached to the free side of the blast-deflector, is passed through an opening, S, in the board T in one side of the frame, and is secured to a peg or pin, U, which is adapted to be inserted in the said opening. By drawing upon the said cord the blast-deflector may be inclined upward, so as to direct a current of air from the fan or blower at an oblique angle against the under side of the screen, and said blast-deflector may be supported in the said elevated position by inserting the peg U in the opening S and causing the same to bind against the cord R while the latter is taut. \Vhen the said peg is removed from the said opening and the cord is slackened, the blastdeflector moves downward, so as to direct the current of air from the blower or fan at an acute angle to the under side of the screen. a
V represents a pair of pitmen or rods, which have one end pivoted to the shoe and their opposite ends provided with straps engaging the eccentrics G, so that when the fan or blower is rotated the eccentrics communicate reciprocating motion to the shoe, as will be readily understood.
"W represents a semi cylindrical trough, which is arranged below the shoe and extends throughout the entire length of frame A. The elevated end of the said. trough is suspended. from one end of the said frame by means of pivoted links X, and the lower end of the said trough is supported by pivoted links Y.
Z represents a pair of rods, which connect one pair of the standards K with the trough, so as to impart the reciprocating motion of the shoe to the trough, as will be readily understood.
A represents a transverse downwardlyinclined conveyor-spout, which is arranged at the lower end of the bottom board, 0, of the shoe, and has its lower end arranged above the upper end of a downwardly-inclined delivery-spout, B.
0 represents a cylindrical revolnble screen, which is provided with a central shaft that has its ends journaled in hearings in transverse bars D at the upper and lower ends of the trough. Both ends of the said cylindrical screen are open, as shown.
E represents a funnel, which is arranged under the lower end of the screen N, and has aconducting-spout, F, that leads to the up per end of the cylindrical screen.
G represents a shaft, which is journaled in suitable bearings, H, on one side of the frame, Keyed to the said shaft is a spur-wheel, I, which meshes with the pinion F, and also keyed to the said shaft is a crank or belt-pulley, K, and a pulley, L.
M represents a pair of guide pulleys or sheaves, which are journaled in a bracket or standard, N, secured to the frame near the lower side thereof. An endless belt, 0, passes around the cylindrical screen, under the guide-pulleys M, and over the pulley L, and thereby, when the wheel I is rotated, the rotary motion thereof is communicated through the pulley Land the belt 0 to the cylindrical screen. As the said wheel 1 rotates, it also communicates accelerated rotary motion to the fan or blower, and the eccentrics of the latter communicate reciprocating or longitudinally vibratory motion to the shoe, the trough, and the cylindrical screen, as will be readily understood.
The grain is fed from the hopper onto the coarse upper screen, M, which is made of perforated zinc, and said screen causes the grain to be separated from the fragments of straw and other trash,causes the grain to fall through its perforations onto the lower screen,while the straw and trash are discharged from its lower end. Thelower screen permitsthesmallseedssuch as pigeon-seed, mustard-seed, &c.to fall through its meshes onto the inclined bottom board, 0, of the shoe, and the said seed rolls down the said inclined bottom board into the transverse spout A, and is discharged from the latter into the conducting-spout B, and from the same into a suitable receptacle. The cockle, wild buckwheat, and the larger grains pass over the lower screen into the funnel E, and are fed through the spout F into the upper end of the revolving cylindrical screen. The openings in the latter are just sufficiently large for the cookie and small grains to pass through them, and the same fall upon the vibrating inclined trough, and are discharged through an opening, 1?, near the lower end of thelatter. Thelarger grains passoverthelower side of the roller or cylindrical screen, and are discharged from the lower end of the vibratory trough. The fan or blower serves to effectually winnow the grain as the same passes through the upper screen.
Having thus described my invention, I clain1 1. The combination of the vibratory shoe having the screens, the inclined suspended trough connected to the shoe at one end and vibrating therewith, and the revoluble cylindrical screen journaled in the trough, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the vibratory shoc having the screens, thesemi-cylindrical trough connected at one end to the shoe and vibrating therewith, the cylindrical screen journaled in the trough, the rotary fan or blower, connec tions between the shaft thereof and the shoe to vibrate the latter, the shaft G, geared to the fan-shaft and having the pulley L, and the endless belt engaging said pulley and the re voluble screen to rotate the latter, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the frame A, the shoe having the screens and provided with the depending standards pivotally connected to the frame, the inclined trough arranged under the shoe, the pivotal loops connecting the ends of said trough to the ends'of the frame and suspending the trough, the rodsconnecting said trough to the shoe or standards thereof, and the revolving screen journaled above the trough and adapted to vibrate therewith and with the shoe, substantially as described.
