Description

R. H. AIKEN.
BANANA c sB.
(No Model.)
Patented Nov. 13, 1888..
UNITED STATES PATENT tries,
ROBERT H. AIKEN, OF SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS BANANA -CAS E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,706, dated November 13,1888.
Serial No. 273,620. (No model.)
tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
The purpose of my invention is to provide a case or crate in which bananas may be readily packed and transported without injury to the lruit; and it consists of a body of cylindrical form made from one or more thicknesses of Veneer, the ends of which are firmly secured to two heads.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the case before the fruit is packed, and Fig. 2 a perspective view of the case when packed.
A represents the heads, 13 the body, and G the hoops. The veneer used for the body is composed of one piece bent in cylindrical form about the heads, and is only partially nailed thereto, so as to leave one free lateral margin adapted to unroll from the ends to open the case for inserting and packing a bunch of bananas. On the outside of the veneer and at the ends thereof either wooden or iron hoops are nailed for the purpose of giving additional strength and security.
After the bananas have been placed in the case they are packed with straw or other suitable material in order to keep the fruit from being bruised by contact with the sides of the case, and when the fruit has been thus packed the free edge of the veneer is lapped over upon the otheredge and the ends nailed to the heads, and the hoops fastened in the usual manner.
A case thus constructed is simple, convenient, and cheap, requiring less material in its construction and less straw for packing. The cylindrical form gives greater strength and conforms to the shape of a bunch of bananas.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- As a new article of manufacture, a bananacase consisting of two equal circular plane heads, a single piece of veneer, and a hoop external to the veneer in the plane of each head, said veneer and hoops being bent together about and secured permanently to onehalf the circumference of said heads and having free ends a little greater in length than such halfcircumference', substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
