To aZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, GEORGE CORNER Fence, a citizen of the United States, residing at O0- lumbus, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Grain-\Veighing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in grain-weighing machines; and it consists in a certain novel construction and arrangement of devices, fully set forth hereinafter, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In'the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front view of a grain-weigher embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical central sectional view of the same. Fig. 4 is a plan view.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A. A designate hoppers, which are arranged adjacent to each other and are adapted to receive the grain from the conveyor 13, which is pivoted at its upper end and receives the grain from the elevator.
In suitable aligned bearings, e c, is mounted the spindle O, to which is attached the oscillating scalebeam D, and E represents a movable weight sliding on the said beam and provided with a set-screw, e, to lock the weight at the desired point of the beam. The lower end of the scale-beam is provided with an enlargement, F, on which are arranged the pins ff, extending beyond the front and rear sides of the same, and it will be seen that the pins are disposed on opposite sides of the spindle O, whereby, when a greater weight is placed on one of the pins than on the other, it will tend to draw the upper end of the scale-beam over to that side of the spindle. The oscillation of the scale-beam is limited by the stopblocks G G.
H H represent the scale-platforms, which consist each of a bottom, h, and two sides, h h, (namely, a rear and an inner side,) and the inner sides are provided at their upper ends with the parallel apertnred ears I l, which depend from the pins f f, and thus suspend the platforms freely.
K K are links, which are pivoted at one end to the base L of the weighingmachine and at the other end to the bottom of the platforms,
their function being to prevent the platforms from swinging and thus interfering with the operation of the machine.
The rear end of the spindle O is provided with a crank-arm, M, provided at its lower end with a pin, m, and N represents a lever, which is pivoted on the rear side of the machine and is provided with a longitudinal slot or opening, 0, in which the said pin on operates. The upper end of this lever is connected to the lower end of the conveyor, hereinbefore mentioned, and its lower end may be connected to a suitable registering device, which is not shown in the drawings, as it forms no part of the invention and may be of any preferred construction.
The operation of the machine is as follows: The sacks which are designed to receive the grain are arranged on the platforms. The grain is delivered into one of the hoppers and passes therethrough into thesacl: until the weight on this platform swings the weighted scale-beam beyond the vertical position, when the latter will drop on the opposite side, the flow of the grain will be turned by the slotted lever into the other hopper, and the other sack will be filled.
The operation of this machine is automatic, and it is only necessary to remove the sacks as they are filled and replace them by empty sacks.
It will be seen that the weight of the sack which is being filled comes directly on the scale beam, and the slotted lever is entirely unaffected by the motion of the scale-beam until the latter reaches the vertical position, and then the combined weights of the filled sack and the weighted scale-beam act on the slotted lever to operate the register and alter the position of the lower end of the conveyer. Thus the weighing is accurately accomplished, as the friction and weight of the other parts of the machine do not come into the calculation, and when the desired amount of grain has passed into the sack the flow is changed instantly and directed into the other hopper.
The position of the weight on the scale-beam may be changed to cause any desired weight of grain to be placed in each sack.
The device, as will be seen, is simple. The
action of the various parts is direct, thereby avoiding the possibility of interference, and the working or moving parts are, further, few and simply connected.
Having described the invention, I claim- 1. In a grain-weighing machine, the combination of the scale-beam provided with the spindle G, mounted in suitable bearings, and the pins f f, arranged, respectively, on opposite sides of the spindle, the platform provided with apertnred ears mounted on the said pins ff, and the swinging links K K, connecting the lower ends of the platforms to the support of the weighing-machine, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a grain-weighing machine, the combi nation,with the conveyer arranged at its lower end over the hoppers A A, of the scale-beam D, provided with a spindle mounted in suitable bearings, the platforms suspended on suitable'pinsJ'f, on the seale-beam and arranged under the said hoppers, the lever connected at its upper end to the lower end of the said con veyer, and the crank-arm on the rear end of the spindle 0, operating in a slot or opening in the lever to alter the position of the lower end of the conveyer, substantially as specified.
3. In a grain-weighing machine, the combination, with the conveyer arranged at its lower end over suitable hoppers, A A, of the scalebeam D, provided with a suitable weight and having a spindle, 0, provided at its rear end with a crankarni, M, the platforms suspended from suitable pins on the scale-beam and arranged undcr the said hoppers, and the lever N, connected at its upper end to the conveyer and provided with a slot, 0, adapted to re ceive the said ci'anlcarni, whereby as the scalebeam changes position the lower end of the conveyor will be moved to change the flow of grain to the other hopper, substantially as specified.
