My invention relates to improvements in traveling flat carding-engines; and the chief object of my improvements is to reduce the wear on the ends of the traveling flats, and also to facilitate the adjustment of their clothing to the main cylinder.
In carrying my invention into effect I dispense with the ordinary flexible bend, and I employ instead on each side of the machine a spider-wheel or disk-wheel, which is mounted upon a flanged bush fitted over the shaft of the main cylinder. The flange of this bush is slotted and bolted to a fixed part in such manner that the bush and the wheel can be adjusted concentrically with the periphery of the main cylinder and independently of the shaft.
A feature of my invention is to give a slow revolving motion to the spider-wheel, so that the surface speed of the wheel equals or approximates the speed at which the flats travel,
3 5 and thus there is no friction between the flats and the wheel. Consequently a coating of any suitable material could be laid on the periphcry of the wheel. After the flats have been set to the clothing of the main cylinder it is nec- 43 essary to turn, grind, or otherwise reduce the diameter of the wheel whenever the cylinderclothing is rcground.
In order'that my invention maybe fully understood and readily carriedinto effect, I will 5 describe the accompanying sheet of drawings, reference being had to the figures and letters marked thereon.
Figure l is a side elevation of part of a carding-engine to which my improvements have been applied. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the sides of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the flanged and slotted bush.
In the views, A designates the main cylinder, and I) the cylinder-shaft supported in bearings c in the blocks or pedestals c.
d is the engine bend or framing; cl, the lower framing, and 0 part of the traveling flats. On each side of the machine is a wheel, f, in this case a spider-wheel, which I employ according to my invention, fltted and free to revolve upon a flanged bush, 9, secured by bolts 9 to the pedestal 0. These rods pass through slots 9 in said bush. On the periphery of the wheel f,I propose to secure a ring of metal, f, or a layer or coating of any suitable material, on which the ends of the flats are supported. The spider-wheel f is provided with wormteeth f on its face, and is caused to revolve at the same or approximately the same surface speed as the speed at which the flats travel by means of a worm on a shaft, h, having its hearings in brackets h, fixed to said bend or framing. This worm-shaft is provided with belt-pulleys h h", either one of which may be connected at will to one of a corresponding pair of pulleys, h h", on a driving-shaft, H. As shown,the connection is between .pulley h and pulley It" by means of an endless belt, h". The driving-shaft II may receive motion directly from an engine,or through any convenient arrangement of intermediate mechanism.
When the card-clothing on the main cylinder a has been ground,it is necessary to reduce the diameter of the spider-wheelf in order to adjust the flats. This may be effected in various ways, but preferably by grinding the ring f on the periphery of the wheel by means of a revolving grinding roller or cutter, 2', held in an adjustable bracket, 7', secured to the bend d. \Vhen, however, instead of the metal ring f, the periphery of the wheel is covered or coated with other materialsuch as paperthe diameter of the wheel might be reduced by cutting and trimming or otherwise removing one or more layers of such material.
When the bearings of the shaft I) wear, the periphery of the wheel 1 may be adjusted con centrica-ll'y with the periphery of the main cylinder by slackening the bolts and regulating the position of the bush.
In referring to the drawings I have described one wl1eel,f, only; but itis obvious that there would be two exactly similar wheelsf mounted adjustably, as described, one on either side of the machine.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The traveling flats and main cylinder of a carding-engine, in combination with two wheels or disks mounted one on each side of said engine, and gearing for rotating said wheels continuously at a surface speed ap proximately equal to that of the flats, substantially as set forth.
2. The traveling flats and main cylinder of a carding-engine, in combination with two wheels or disks mounted one at each side of said engine, gearing for rotating said wheels, and devices for adjusting the said wheels to make them concentric with the main cylinder, substantially as set forth.
3. In combination with the traveling flats,
the main cylinder, and the pedestals, a card ing-engine, the wheelsf on opposite sides of said engine, the shaft on which said wheels are mounted, the slotted bushes 9 between said wheels and said shaft, and the bolts which pass through the slots of said bushes into the pedestals, substantially as set forth.
4. The traveling flats and main cylinder of a carding engine, in combination with the wheelsf, arranged one on each side of said engine, the rings f, secured to said Wheels, the slotted bushes 9, bolts g,thesupporting-frame, and gearing for rotating the wheels f, substantially as set forth.
