SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,636, dated October 23, 1888.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that we, Josnrn '1. MOORE and WILLIAM HENRY EDWARDS, citizens of the United States, residing at Wake Forest, in the county of fake and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Oar-Couplings; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon,which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to car-couplings, and has for its object in common with this class of devices to produce a coupling that will be automatic in its action and couple the cars when run together without requiring the brakemen to go between the cars, and which will be simple, efficient, and capable of being applied to cars in use at a comparatively low figure.
The improvement consists of the peculiar construction and combination ofparts, which hereinafter will be more fully described and claimed, and shown in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the ends of two cars, showing them coupled by our improved coupling; Fig. 2, an end view of the car and the coupling; and Fig. 3 is a detail top plan view showing the pivotal connection between the operating-lever and the car and its capability of engaging with the catch when dep ressed at its outer end.
The draw-head A is stationary or movable, as desired, and has the offset a formed therein to bring the two ends in different planes. The end of the draw-head is provided with the re cess b, which receives the ordinary link, 0, and pin B, and the under side of the drawhead is recessed, and in this recess J is fitted the catch D. The rear end of the catch projects through the offset a, and is operated on by the lever E to release the latch and uncouple the cars. The latch is pivoted near its rear end ,by the bolt d, and its front end is supported by the arm or stay F and the bracket G. The stay F is pivoted at its upper end to Serial No. 275,835. (No model.)

One end of a car is provided with our coupling, as above described, and the other end of the same car is provided with a link, H, and with the ordinary draw-bar, I, if desired.
When the coupling is set to couplethe catch is held in the recess J by the lower end of the stay resting on the bracket G. hen the cars come together, the link H strikes against the stay and knocks it from its perch on the bracket, and the front end of the catch falling engages with the link and couples the cars. The catch is operated by the lever E, which is pivoted at its inner end to the car at in, and is adapted to engage with the rear end of the catch. By pressing down on the outer end of the lever E the inner end of the catch will be correspondingly depressed by the engagement therewith of the said lever, and the outer end of the said catch will be elevated and disengaged from the link H.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is
1. The combination, with the draw head having an offset and a recess in its under side that extends through the offset, of the latch pivoted in the said recess and extending beyond the offset and the operating-lever, substantially as described.
2. The herein-described coupling,composed of the draw-head having a recess, b, and pin B in its end, and having an offset and a recesaJ, V-
in its under side which extends through the offset, the latch pivoted in the recess J and having its end extending past the offset, the bracket, and the stay F, having the extension f, pivoted to the catch, substantially as and for the purpose described.
