FRANK O. GARRISON, OF ALDINE, NEW' JERSEY.
COVERER AND LAND-ROLLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,238, dated October 16,1888.
Serial No. 274,527. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK O. GARRISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aldine, in the county of Salem, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Coverer and Land-Roller, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in a combined coverer and land-roller; and the novelty of the invention resides in the construction, combination, arrangement, and adaptation of the parts comprising the same, all as hereinafter fully described and specifically claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide an implement which will combine a coverer and land-roller in such manner that each willperform its function as perfectly as the separate implement; also to so construct the implement as to enable either the coverer or land-roller to be employed, or both, as desired.
A further object is to provide an implement of the character mentioned which will be of simple, strong, and durable construction, thoroughly efficient, and inexpensive of production.
Figure 1 represents a top plan view of a coverer and land-roller embodying my invention. Fig. 2 representsaside elevation thereof. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view on line a: 00, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents a sectional view on line 3 y, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A and A designate the frames, formed each of two parallel bars or beams.
B and B designate the connecting or cross beams, which are secured to the frames A and A by means of the castings C. These castings consist of a plate, to the upper face of which are secured the cross-bcams,and from the under sides of each of the plates depend ears 0, and to these depending ears are secured the parallel beams of the frames, thus firmly securing the cross-beams and frames together, as is evident. The plates on the forward ends of the frame are also provided on one side with lugs 0', provided with openings, the purpose of which will be seen, and the forward plates, in addition to having the beams secured to the depending ears thereon, also have the hangers d for the axle d of the guiding-wheels D secured thereto, as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
In the openings of the lugs C of the castings C bear the journals of the scrapers E for the guiding-wheels, and said scrapers are retained in contact with the guiding-wheels by means of the spring F, one end of which bears against the scrapers and the other end is secured to the castings between the lugs C thereon.
G designates sleeves or collars embracing the parallel beams ofthe frames and made horizontally adjustable on said beams by means of adjusting-screws g.
The sleeves G are provided on one side with eyes, slots, or openings, in which the shank g of the covering blades or plows G is received, and which plows are made vertically adjustable and removable by means of the adj ustingscrews 9*.
Secured to the depending ears of the rear castings are theupper ends of the curved hangers H, in the lower ends of which are journaled the land-rollers J. These rollers comprise the peripheral or rolling portion j, constructed of sheet metal, and the cast heads j.
To the axles of the land-rollers are loosely attached arms K, carrying the scrapers K at their outer ends, and at their inner ends being bent up to bear against the under side of the curved hangers to form a stop and prevent the scrapers from moving downward only for a limited distance, but nothindering the upward movement.
M designates the handles, secured to the innor side beams, and at an intermediate point of their length braced to the rear cross-beams by means of the standards or braces M, thus securing the handles firmly in place.
The operation is as follows: After the furrows have been formed and the seed or grain dropped therein, the machine is passed over the field, the guiding-wheels entering the furrows, the coveringplows following and throwing the earth in the furrows, and the land-rollers then completing the work of smoothing the land.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. iS-
l. The frames A A, each formed oftwo parallel bars, the crossbcams B B, the castings 0, with hangers connecting said frames and beams, the said castings having the slotted hangers d and lugs 0 agnide-wheel'jonrnaled in said slotted hangers, a scraper journaled in said lugs, and the spring F, bearing on said scraper, said parts being combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A combined coverer and land-roller having a frame with rear castings, O, hangers secured to said castings, a roller journaled in said hangers, gravitating scraper-bars having one end bearing against the under side of said hangers, and the scrapers adapted to be in contact with the periphery of said rollers, said parts being combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth covering-plows, the curved hangers at the rear ends of the frames having the land-rollersjonrnaled therein, and the scrapers for said rollers, all arranged and adapted to serve substantiall y as described.
