lubricantchamber, G, said chamber being filled with absorbent material-such as cotton,
of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of l dye-and then the lubricant is poured into the New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvement-s in Vehicle-Axles, and I do hereby declare that the following description of my said invention, taken in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawings, forms a full, clear, and exact specification, which will enable others skilledV in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention has general reference to Vehicle axles and hubs; and it consists, essentially, in the novel and peculiar combination of parts and details of construction, as hereinafter first fully set forth and described, and then pointed ont in the claim.
In the drawings already mentioned, which serve to illustrate my Asaid invention more fully, Figure 1 is an elevation of one end of a vehicle-axle provided with a hub. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar View on a larger scale.
Like parts are designated by similar letters of reference in all the figures.
My present invention has for its obj ect certain improvements whereby a vehicle axle and hub are more securely attached and more readily detached than has heretofore been accomplished.
A is the axle, having a collar, B', formed integral with said axle, a screw-threaded portion, a, Fig. 3, directly in front of said collar, nd the axle-shank B, as clearly shown in C is an internally screw -threaded sleeve screwed upon the threaded portion a and butting, by preference,with a hexagonally-formed wrench-section, c, against the collar B. This sleeve has a cylindrical portion, c', Figs. 2 and 3, and a collar or projecting rim, D.
E is a hexagonally-formed `sleeve-nut revolving upon the cylindrical portion c of the sleeve C.
F is the hub box or skein, having on its larger end ascrew-threaded portion, f, wherewith engages the swivel-nut E, and two lugs, g, to prevent said skein from turning in the hub J, as hereinafter mentioned. The skein F is longer than the shank B, so as to leave a said absorbent material, which will be disn tributed over the shank B through the groove b. The end of the skein is externally screwthreaded at 7L to receive a nut, I-I, by means of which the skein is fastened in the hub J.
I K are two metallic bands having centrally a web, ik, respectively, said bands being forced onto the hub J and retained thereon by the enlarged portionfof the box F bearing against the web t' and the nut H bearing against the web It, so that when said nut H is screwed up itv will draw the bands toward each other, and thereby securely hold the parts in proper position.
d e are leather washers placed on each side of the collar D, for obvious reasons.
The depth of the nut E is so regulated that when its face bears tightly against the web t' the axle is revolving freely in the box or skein without any unnecessary friction or play.
It will be readily observed that a vehiclewheel, if provided with my improved axles and hubs, can be removed by either unscrewing the sleeve-nut E from the skein F or by unscrewing the sleeve C by applying a wrench to the hexagonal portion c, an advantage of considerable importance, because it allows the use of solid washers d e and their removal and renewal at a moments notice, and for other obvious reasons.
An axle and hub constructed as described possesses all the advantages of both the metallic and wooden hubs without their disadvantages, my wooden hub, with its hands and webs, being substantially as strong and durable as a metallic hub.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure to me by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, a vehicle-axle consisting, essentially, of the axle A, having fixed collar B', screw-threaded portion a directly in front of said collar, and shank B, the sleeve C, having hexagonal wrench-section c, cylindrical portion c', and collar D, swivel-nut E, revolving upon said portion c and engaging the enlarged portion f of the skein F, said skein having the screw-threaded invention I have hereto set my hand in the portion h fitted with the nut H and bearing presence of two subscribing Witnesses. with its enlarged portion f against the web i and with the nut H against the web 7c of the wv' H' u RIGHT' 5 bands I K, respectively, as and for the object Attest:
