Abstract

A folding bracket mechanism having a first brace member pivotally connected to a first brace support member, a second brace member pivotally connected to a second brace support member and a supported member pivotally connected to the ends of the first brace member and the second brace member at points spaced different distances from one end of the support member. The folding bracket mechanism in use is movable between a first position having the second brace member perpendicular to a line through the brace support members and a second position having the brace members parallel to the brace support members.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The folding bracket mechanism of this invention is related to unequal arm folding mechanisms functional for supporting gates, doors, windows, and the like where it is desired to move an object between a first position and a second position. Numerous types of folding bracket mechanisms are known in the prior art which have equal and unequal length arms or braces for supporting objects and to move them between a storage position and a use position or between two alternate use positions. These prior art folding mechanisms are adapted for use in supporting devices such as ironing boards, table tops, etc., wherein the article is stored in an upright position in a cabinet and moved to an essentially horizontal position or slightly inclined position for use. None of the prior art devices known are constructed for use without the cabinet and they are not adaptable for use with a gate, a door, a window, a shelf, an awning or any structure of the like which is normally used in one position and storable in a second position or usable in one of two alternate positions.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The folding bracket mechanism of this invention is presented herein in six embodiments thereof that are adapted for multiple uses. The mechanism is specifi cally adapted for use with a door, a window, an awning, a gate, a bench, a shelf, a table and can be adapted for additional uses. The folding bracket mechanism of this invention includes a first brace member pivotally supported for swinging movement about a first brace support member, a second brace member pivotally supported for swinging movement about a second brace support member, and a supported member pivotally connected to and supported by the first and second brace members. The folding bracket mechanism in use is movable between a first position having the second brace member generally perpendicular to a line through the brace support members and a second position having both the first brace and a second brace parallel to the support members.
One object of this invention is to provide a folding bracket mechanism overcoming the aforementioned disadvantages of the prior art devices.
Still, one other object of this invention is to provide a folding bracket mechanism structure having a pair of brace members pivotally attached to brace support members and pivotally attached to a supported member such as a gate, a door, a window or the like, with the points of attachment on the gate, door, window or the like, with the braces attached to the supported 'member at points spaced different distances from one end of the supported member.-
Still, another object of this invention is to provide a folding bracket mechanism which is powered.
Yet, another object of this invention is to provide a folding bracket mechanism having a pair of brace members pivotally mounted on support members and pivotally attached to a supported member at points "spaced different distances from one end of the supporting member, wherein the mechanism will move between a first position having one of the braces generally perpendicular to a line through the brace support members and a second position having both of the braces parallel to the supporting member and the brace support members and further with the braces constructed so that one brace will receive or overly a portion of the other brace when the mechanism is in the second posi tion.
Various other objects, advantages, and features of the invention will become apparent to those skilled in the art from the following discussion, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which:

The following is a discussion and description of preferred specific embodiments of the folding bracket mechanism structure of this invention, such being made with reference to the drawings, whereupon the same reference numerals are used to indicate the same or similar parts and/or structure. It is to be understood that such discussion and description is not to unduly limit the scope of the invention.
DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED ENIBODIIVIENT The folding bracket mechanism of this invention is disclosed herein in six embodiments thereof. One embodiment, 1 of the folding bracket mechanism of this invention is applied to a gate structure and is generally indicated at and shown on sheets 1 and 2 of the drawings in FIGS. 1-5. Another embodiment (2), of the folding bracket mechanism of this invention is applied to a door or the like and is indicated generally at 11 and shown on sheet 3 of the drawings in FIGS. 6-8. Other embodiments, (3-6), of the folding bracket mechanism disclose same with windows, shutters, awnings, shelving, tables and other similar structures that are normally used in one position and stored in another; these embodiments are shown on sheet 4 of the drawings in FIGS. 9-12. In all embodiments the basic kinematics of the mechanism is substantially the same wherein the first and second braces are pivotally attached to a supporting structure and to a support member. The specific supporting structure and supported member varies to some extent between the several embodiments of the invention as shown and discussed hereinafter. All embodiments of the folding bracket mechanism of this invention are shown with an optional powered or motorized operator to effect the motion of the folding mechanism.
Referring to the drawings in detail and in particular to sheets 1 and 2, one embodiment, 1), of the folding bracket mechanism of this invention is shown thereon and is indicated generally at 10 with a gate structure, indicated generally at 16. In this first embodiment, (l), the folding bracket mechanism 10 includes a first brace member 18 having a first end portion 20 and a second or opposite end portion 22, a pair of second brace members 24 having a first end portion 26 and a second end portion 28, a first Support member indicated generally at 30 pivotally attached to the first end portion 20 of the first brace member, a second support member indicated generally at 32 pivotally attached to the first end portion 26 of the second brace members 24, and a supported member indicated generally at 34 which is the movable panel portion of the gate 16. The braces are mounted with the gate at different distances from one end of the gate as shown. The first support member 30 is in this installation an upright post 36 mounted in the ground with a lug-like fitting 38 mounted thereon for pivotally attaching the first end portion 20 of the first brace member 18. The second support member 32 in this installation is an upright post 40 having a pair of lug- like fixtures 42 and 44 mounted thereon for pivotally attaching the first end portions 26 of the second brace member 24. The gate 16 includes the movable panel portion indicated generally at 34 which is positionable between the post 40 and another post 46 when the gate is in one position. As shown, the movable panel portion of the gate 34 includes a pair of transverse members 48 and 50 connected by a plurality of upright members 52. The gates transverse members 48 and 50 are preferably generally U-shaped channel members secured to the upright members as shown. Although the gate is shown with U-shaped channel members, it is to be understood that it can be constructed with the braces attached alongside transverse members that are not U-shaped channel members. The folding bracket mechanisms second brace members 24 are attached on their second end portions 28 to the gates transverse members 48 and 50 as shown in FIG. 5 with their end portions being attached by an upright shaft 54. The second end portion 22 of the first brace member 18 is pivotally mounted with an upright shaft 56 that is mounted through the gates transverse members 48 and 50 as shown.
It is to be noted that the distance between the first end portions of the braces is substantially greater than the distance between their second end portions in their respective mountings. FIGS. 1, 2 and 5 show the folding bracket mechanism 10 with the gate 16 in a first or shut position wherein the second brace members 24 are generally perpendicular to a line through the support members or posts 30 and 32 and the supported member or gate 16 is essentially parallel to the second brace members 24. In this position the first brace members 18 is inclined relative to the second brace members 24 and the gate 16. FIG. 4 shows the folding bracket mechanism 10 of the gate 16 in a second or open position wherein the first brace member 18 is essentially parallel to the second brace members 24 and to the movable panel portion 34 of the gate 16. When the folding bracket mechanism 10 is in the first position the second brace members 24 are positioned within the opening of the U-shaped structure of the gates transverse members 48 and 50 on the left side of the gate as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. When the folding bracket mechanism 10 is in the second position as shown in FIG. 4 the second brace members 24 are positioned within the opening of the U-shaped gate transverse members 48 and 50 on what is the right-hand side of the gate as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. With the folding bracket mechanism 10 in the second position the first brace 18 is positioned between the gate transverse members 48 and 50 and extends beyond what is the right-hand end of the gate as shown in FIG. 2 or upper end of the gate as shown in FIG. 4. FIG. 3 shows the folding bracket mechanism 10 at a point between the first position and the second position. As the folding bracket mechanism 10 moves from the first position to the second position or vice versa, the first brace member 18 and the second brace members 24 move in a swinging motion relative to their respective supports and relative to the supported member or gate 16 in this case. A unique feature of the folding bracket mechanism as it is used with the gate as shown is that the gate can be so positioned and constructed to be in a closed position either in the second position or in the first position. This feature of the mechanism allows it to support a gate or the like controlling access to alternate paths or the like. A gate post 46 is shown to illustrate the gate in a closed position in the first position. Although the folding bracket mechanism 10 is shown here with a gate it is to be understood that it can be used with a door as well.
The folding bracket mechanism 10 of this invention is provided with an optional powered operator usable to move the folding bracket mechanism between the folded positions thereof. The powered operator is shown in dashed lines in the drawings and indicated generally at 60. The powered operator include a motor 62 mounted by a suitable bracket on the lower transverse gate member 50, a first gear 64 rigidly mounted on the shaft 54 and a second gear 66 engaged with the first gear 64 and mounted on the output drive shaft of the motor 62. The shaft 54 is rigidly secured to the second end portions 28 of the second brace members 24. The second gear 66 is preferably a worm type gear with the first gear 64 being appropriately shaped so the rotation of the second gear 66 by the motor will rotate the first gear 64, the shaft 54 and the second brace members 24 relative to the movable panel portion 34 of the gate 16. The motor 62 is necessarily reversible in order to move the folding bracket mechanism between the first and second positions and vice versa. The motor 62 of the powered operator 60 can be any suitable motor or similar powered device of sufficient capacity to adequately move the gate and the folding bracket mechanism. Obviously, the type of motor or other powering device depends on the specific installation situation for the folding bracket mechanism and the available power source. Specifically, the motor of the operator 60 can be a reversible electric motor, a fluid motor, an engine, or if desired a hand crank device. The powered operator 60 is shown connected with the second brace mem- .bers 24 of the folding bracket mechanism; however, it
is to be understood that it can in the alternative be connected with the first brace member 18 and will function similarly to fold the mechanism.
Another embodiment, (2), of the folding bracket mechanism of this invention is shown on sheet 3 of the drawings in FIGS. 6, 7, and 8 and generally indicated at 11. This embodiment, (2), of the folding bracket mechanism is in this instance applied to a door for moving the door between an open position and a closed position. As shown in FIG. 6 the folding bracket mechanism 11 is mounted on a garage type door indicated generally at 70 with the door movable between a shut or a closed position and an open position wherein the door is raised and positioned generally horizontally. The folding bracket mechanism includes a first brace member 72 having a first end portion 74 pivotally mounted on a first support member, indicated generally at 76, and having a second end portion 78 pivotally mounted on a supported member which in this case is one side of the door 70 and including a second brace member 82 having a first end portion 84 pivotally mounted on a second support member indicated generally at 86 and having a second end portion 88 pivotally mounted with the supported member which in this case is the door 70. The braces are mounted for swinging movement about their respective mounts and they are mounted at different distances from one end of the door 70 as shown. The first support member 76 has a lug-like portion 90 secured to a mounting member 92 which is a suitable structural portion of the building or the like which mounts the door 70. The second support member 86 has a lug-like member 94 secured to a mounting member 96 which is a suitable structural portion of the building mounting the door. The second end portions 78 and 88 of the first and second braces 72 and 82, respectively, are mounted in a supported member mount 98 which in use mounts the facing material 80 of the door 70. The supported member mount 98 is used here as a convenient structure for mounting the door or any other supported member with the folding bracket mechanism 11.
FIG. 7 shows in detail the preferred structure of the several members of the folding bracket mechanism 12 of this embodiment which will allow for the mechanism to fold in a nesting relation. The supported member mount 98 is a generally U-shaped channel member with the second brace member 82 eing a smaller U-shaped channel'member and mounted on the interior of the supported member mount 98. The supported member mount 98 and the second brace member 82 are pivotally connected by pivot pins 100 except when using the optional power operator as will be described hereinafter. The first brace member 72 is preferably a tubular member mounted with the door support member 98 by a-U-shaped channel member 102. The first brace members second end portion 78 is pivotally attached to the channel mount member 102 by a pivot pin 104.
FIG. 6 shows the door having a pair of the folding bracket mechanisms of this embodiment (2), of this invention attached on opposed sides thereof and mounted with opposite sides of the door frame with the door in an open position. With the door 70 in the open position of the folding bracket mechanism 12 is in a first position wherein the second brace member 82 is essentially perpendicular to a line through the support members 76 and 86, and parallel to the supported member which is the door with the first brace member 72 being inclined relative to the second brace member. FIG. 8 shows the folding bracket mechanism 12 in dashed lines in the first or open position and in solid lines in a second or shut position with the door 70. In the second position, the first brace member 72 and the second brace member 82 are parallel and are each parallel to the supported member mount 98 and the facing material of the door. With the folding bracket mechanism 11 in the first position, the first brace member 72, the second brace member 82, and the door support member 98 are in the relative positions shown in the right-hand portion of FIG. 8 and in detail in FIG. 7. When the folding bracket mechanism is in the second position the second brace member 82 lays in the channel portion of the supported member mount 98 and it overlies the second end portion 78 of the first brace member 72 in a nested relation.
With the folding bracket mechanism 11 of this embodiment, (2), of this invention applied to a door 70 as shown, the door can be opened and closed without the aid of a powered operator. Depending upon the size of the door it may be necessary to support the lower end portion of the door which is the outer end portion of the door when it is in the raised position to hold such in the open position. It is to be noted that the folding bracket mechanism 12 of this invention can be used on windows, awnings, shutters or the like with the supported member mount 98 being secured to or a part of the window glass frame or the like and the first and second supports 76 and 86 being on a portion of the window mounting frame or building structure. With the folding bracekt mechanism used on a window, a suitable lock, a resilient detent device or other latching means can be provided for securing it in the open or shut position.
The folding bracket mechanism 11 of this embodiment, (2), of this invention has an optional powered operator indicated generally at and shown in dashed lines. The powered operator includes a motor 112, a first gear 114 secured to second end portion 88, the second brace member 82, and a second gear 116 engaged with the first gear 114 and mounted on the output shaft of the motor 112.. The first gear 1 14 is rigidly mounted on a shaft 118 which is rigidly secured to the second brace member 82 so that rotation of the first gear 114 will cause rotation of the second brace member 82 relative to the supported member mount 98. The first gear 116 is preferably a worm type gear mounted on the motors output shaft with the first gear 114 being appropriately shaped to operate with the worm gear 116. The motor 112 is Supported by a bracket 120 that is mounted on the facing material 80 of the door. The motor 112 can be substantially any powering device which will rotate the gearing and cause motion of the folding bracket mechanism, for example, an electric motor, a fluid motor or a hand crank device. In use the powered operator 110 rotates the second brace member 82 relative to the supported member mount 98 which in turn pivots the folding bracket mechanism and moves the door, window, or the like, in accordance with the described swinging motion of the folding bracket mechanism between the described first and second positions.
Another embodiment, (3), of the folding bracket mechanism of this invention is shown on sheet 4 of the drawings in FIG. 9. This embodiment, (3), of the folding bracket mechanism is indicated generally at 12 and is shown with a supported member indicated generally at 120. In this embodiment of the folding bracket mechanism it is mounted on a building which is the supporting structure in a position above an opening to in use move the supported member 120 in a horizontally disposed plane between a first or open position where the supported member is horizontally disposed and a second or shut position where the supported member is vertically disposed over the opening. In this embodiment, (3) the folding bracket mechanism 12 is particularly well adapted for use where the supported member is a door or the like such as garage door. However, it is to be understood that the supported member can also be a window, a shutter, an awning, or the like, where in use are required to be positioned between two alternate positions. The folding bracket mechanism includes a first brace member 122 having a first end portion 124 and a second end portion 126; a second brace member 128 having a first end portion 130 and a second end portion 132; a first support member 136 pivotally mounting the first end portion 124 of the first brace member 122; and a second support member 138 pivotally mounting the first end portion 130 of the second brace member 128; and a supported member mount member 140 for mounting the supported member which is pivotally connected to the second end portion 126 of the first brace member 122 and the second end portion 132 of the second brace member 128. As shown in FIG. 9 the first brace member 122 is substantially longer than the second brace member 128. The first end portions of the braces 122 and 128 are spaced a substantially greater distance apart than their second end portions. The first support member 136 is positioned above the second support member 138, preferably vertically disposed. The supported member 129 is mounted on the supported member mount portion 140 as shown. The second end portions of the braces 122 and 128 are mounted different distances from one end of the supported member as shown.
FIG. 9 shows the folding bracket mechanism 12 in a first or door open position in the dashed lines and in a second or door shut position in solid lines. In the first position the second brace member 128 is substantially parallel to the supported member mount portion 140 and the supported member. In the second position the first brace member 122, the second brace member 128 and the supported member are substantially parallel. The folding bracket mechanism can be easily moved by hand between the first and second positions.
An optional powered operator, indicated generally at 142 is shown in dashed lines in FIG. 9. The operator 142 is a powered device mountable on the supported member and connectable with the braces, preferably the second brace member 128, to in use move the folding bracket mechanism 12. The operator 142 includes a first gear 144 secured to the second end portion 132 of the second brace member 128 and a second gear 146 engaged with the first gear 144 and mounted on the output of a motor 148. The operator 142 is similar to that shown in FIG. 2. The motor 148 can be secured to the supported member 120 or the supported member mount portion 140, depending upon the structure of the supported portion 120. The motor 148 can be any suitable motor or powering device of sufficient power to move the mechanism and the supported member. The motor 148 can be an electrical motor, a fluid motor, a hand crank device, or any suitable powering device.
FIG. 9 shows the folding bracket mechanism 12 in an application on a garage type door or the like where the supporting member 120 has the door facing material 150 attached to the supported member mount 140 and the support members 136 are mounted on a building structure indicated generally at 152. Specifically, the folding bracket mechanism 12 is shown in a garage door type application where the door frame is an opening between a concrete footing or the like 154, an upper header member 156 and side facing members 158. The first and second support members 136 and 138 are attached to a suitable upright frame structure member 160 as shown which can be any suitable portion of the structure of the building 152. As shown, the first brace 122 is attached to the building structure 152 at a point substantially spaced above the second brace 128. In the second position as shown in solid lines both braces are recessed into a portion of the building structure. The door facing material is shown with broken lines to illustrate that the length of the door on either side of the support member 142 can be adjusted as needed for proper opening and closing of the door. Although the folding bracket. mechanism 12 is shown mounted with the building structure with the supports therefor recessed, it is obvious that such can be attached to the external structure of the building if desired. Although the folding bracket mechanism 12 is shown in FIG. 9 in use with a door, it is obvious that such can be applied to other structures, such as windows, awnings, shelves, tables, benches, etc., where the illustrated motion and positions of the folding bracket mechanism would be useful.
Another embodiment, (4), of the folding bracket mechanism of this invention is shown in FIG. 10 and indicated generally at 13. In FIG. 10 the folding bracket mechanism is depicted mounted on a building or the like and supporting a window cover or awning. The folding bracket mechanism 13 is adapted for supporting a sectional supported member indicated generally at which is composed of a pair of segments 162 and 164 which are in use in one position joined in an edge-to-edge relation as shown in the solid lines of FIG. 10 and in another position arranged as shown in dashed lines. The folding bracket mechanism 13 includes a first brace member 166 having a first end portion 168 and a second end portion 170; a second brace member 172 having a first end portion 174 and a second end portion 176; a first support member 178 pivotally mounted the first end portion 158 of the first brace member 166 and a second support member 180 pivotally mounting to the first end portion of the second brace member 172, and including a supported member mount 174 pivotally connected between the second end portions 170 and 176 of the first and second brace members 166 and 172, respectively. The sectional sup ported member 160 is attached to the one side of the second brace member 172 and the support member 174 as shown. The spacing between the first support member 178 and the second support member 180 is substantially less than the spacing between the pivotal connection of the second end portions of the brace members with the supported member mount 174. The supported member mount 174 is provided for convenience in mounting the supported member segment 164.
The folding bracket mechanism 13 is in use moved between a first position as shown in the dashed lines of FIG. 1 and a second position as shown in the solid lines of FIG. 1. In the first position, the supported member mount 175 is generally perpendicular to a line through the first and second supports 178 and 180. In the second position the first brace member 166, the second brace member 172 and the support member 160 are in a parallel relation. In the second position, the first brace member 166 is disposed within the second brace member 172 and the supported member mount 175. If desired, the brace members and the support member 174 can be constructed in the interlocking or nesting fashion as described above in conjunction with the second described embodiment, (2), of this invention or they can be constructed in a non-interlocking relation as shown and described in conjunction with the first embodiment, (1).
A powered operator indicated generally at 182 is provided as an option for moving the folding bracket mechanism between the first and second positions. The operator 182 has a first gear member 184 secured to the second end portion 176 of the second brace member 172, a second gear 186 engaged with the first gear and connected with the output shaft of a motor 188. The operator 182 and gearing is preferably similar to that shown in FIG. -2. The motor 188 is reversible and can be substantially any motor of a sufficient power capacity to move the folding bracket mechanism and the sectional supported member 160 between the described positions. The motor 188 can be, for example, an electric motor, a fluid motor, or a hand powered device.
The sectional supported member 160 is shown in FIG. as a shutter or a window covering mounted on the folding bracket mechanism. The window assembly 190 includes a window sill portion 192, a window 194, and a header member 196 above the window. As shown, the first and second brace members are mounted above the window structure with the brace support members 178 and 180 being attached to building structure members 197 and 198 above the header 196. It is to be understood that the folding bracket mechanism 13 can be mounted on the outer portion of the building structure, on the sides of the window structure or in any suitable position which will enable the sectional supported member 160 to cover the window as illustrated. The folding bracket mechanism 13 of this embodiment, (4), of this invention is shown used as a shutter or a window cover; however, it is to be understood that the folding bracket mechanism in this arrangement can be used to move a window, a door, a table, or the like, or shelving, and it can be adapted for other uses as desired by the user.
Another embodiment, (5)., of the folding bracket mechanism of this invention, is shown in FIG. 11 and generally indicated at 14. The folding bracket mechanism 14 is shown with a supported member indicated generally at 200 and mounted therewith and used in a window cover or shutter support application. The folding bracket mechanism 14 includes a first brace member 202 having a first end portion 204 and a second end portion 206; a second brace member 208 having a first end portion 210 and a second end portion 212; a first support member 214 pivotally mounted the first end portion 204 of the first brace member 202; a second support member 216 pivotally mounting the first end portion of the second brace member 208; and a supported member mount portion 218 pivotally mounted on the second end portions 206 and 212 of the first and second brace members. The supported member, indicated generally at 200, is shown as a flat member which as shown functions as a shutter for the window opening or the like that is generally indicated at 222.
The folding bracket mechanism 14 is constructed with the spacing of the first end portions of the braces being substantially less than the spacing of the second end portions of the braces. The folding bracket mechanism 14 is movable between a first position as shown in the dashed lines of FIG. 11 wherein the second brace member 208 is generally in alignment with the first and second support members 214 and 216 and a second position shown in the solid lines of FIG. 11 wherein the first and second brace members and the support members 218 are parallel. The members of the folding bracket mechanism 14 can be constructed of the channellike members as described above to provide for an interfolding or nesting relation as shown in the second described embodiment, (2) or they can be constructed to be assembled in a side-by-side relation similar to that as shown with the first described embodiment, (1).
A powered operator, indicated generally at 222 and shown in dashed lines is provided as an option for moving the folding bracket mechanism 14 between described positions The powered operator 222 includes a first gear secured to the second end portion 212 of the second brace member 208, a second gear 226 engaged with the first gear and mounted on the output shaft of a motor or the like 228. The structure of te operator is preferably similar to that shown in FIG. 2. Rotation of the motor or the like 228 moves the gears thus effecting motion of the folding bracket mechanism. The motor or the like 228 can be mounted on the supported member mount 218 or the supported member structure 200, at the desire of the user and depending upon the conditions where the folding bracket mechanism 14 is used. The motor 228 can be any suitable motor of substantial power capacity to move the folding bracket mechanism and the supported member 200 between the described positions. For example, the motor 228 can be an electric motor, a fluid motor, or a hand crank mechanism or the like.
The folding bracket mechanism 14 is shown in FIG. 11 in an application supporting a shutter or the like for a window on a building or the like; however, it is to be understood that the folding bracket mechanism can be used for applications other than this. The folding bracket mechanism 14 can be used for a window, a door, a table support, a shelf support, and other numerous applications without departing from the scope of the invention. One application of the folding bracket mechanism with a building structure is as a window closure support and table support combination for a concession stand where it supports a window cover that serves as a table. For the application as shown, the length of the shutter or facing material 220 can be varied as indicated by the broken lines to adjust the size of same as required for the specific application. Obviously, where the folding bracket mechanism is used with a substantially large supported member, it may require the use of more than one of the folding bracket mechanisms for support of the object.
Another embodiment, (6), of the folding bracket mechanism of this invention is shown in FIG. 12 and indicated generally at 15. The folding bracket mechanism 15 is used here as a table top support with the table top indicated generally at 230. The folding bracket mechanism 15 includes a first brace member 232 having a first end portion 234 and a second end portion 236; a second brace member 238 having a first end portion 240 and a second end portion 242; a support member 244, in this case a post or the like, having first and second support portions pivotally mounting the first end portions 234 and 240 of the first and second brace members 232 and 238, respectively; and a supported member mount 246 pivotally connecting the second end portions 236 and 242 of the brace members. The first end portions of the brace members are spaced a substantially greater distance apart than the second end portions thereof which are attached to the supported member mount 246. The supported member mount 246 is attached what is the underneath side of the table top member is position as shown. The folding bracket mechanism of this invention is foldable between a first or open position as shown in the solid lines of FIG. 12 and a second or closed position as shown in the dashed lines of FIG. 12. In the first or open position the table top support members 246 is parallel to the second brace member 238 and the second brace member 238 is perpendicular to the brace support portions. In the second or closed position both brace members 232 and 238 and the table top support member 246 are parallel in an upright position. If desired the folding bracket mechanism 15 can be provided with a locking mechanism (not shown) to latch or secure the folding bracket mechanism in either the first or the second folded positions.
A powered operator, indicated generally at 248, and shown in dashed lines is provided as an option for moving the folding bracket mechanism 15 between the described positions. The powered operator 248 has a first gear secured to the second end portion 242 of the second brace member 238, a second gear engaged with the first gear and mounted on the output shaft of a motor or the like 250. The structure of the operator is preferably similar to that shown in FIG. 2. Rotation of the motor or the like 250 moves the gears and affects motion of the folding bracket mechanism. The motor or the like 250 can be mounted on the supported members mount 246 or on the table top, depending on the desire of the user and structure of the braces and table top. The motor or the like 250 can be any suitable motor having sufficient capacity to move the folding bracket mechanism and the supported member between the described positions. For example, the motor can be an electric motor, a fluid motor or a hand powered device.
The folding bracket mechanism 15 as shown is used on a table top with the mechanism supported by a post or the like; however, it is to be understood that the folding bracket mechanism 15 can be supported by supporting structures other than the shown post 244; for example, it can be supported on a wall. Inasmuch as the folding bracket mechanism 15 is shown with a table top, it is to be understood that such can be used with other similar structures; for example, it can be used to support benches or the like. The folding bracket mechanism 15 of this invention when used on a table top or used with other elongated structures may require the use of more than one of the mechanisms to adequately support the structures. The first and second bracket members 232 and 238 along with the supported members mount 246 can easily be constructed of channellike members as shown and described above in conjunction with the second embodiment, (2), of this invention so that they will fold into an interlocking or nesting fashion as shown in the dashed lines. This folding bracket mechanism 15 is particularly well adapted for use in supporting table tops as it provides a table structure which can be stored against a wall or in an upright position when not in use and it can be extended to the horizontal position when needed.
In the manufacture of the folding bracket mechanism of this invention, it is obvious that the mechanism in its several embodiments can be easily constructed by conventional manufacturing and fabricating techniques to achieve the end product. The folding bracket mechanism is simple in design and structurally uncomplicated. The folding bracket mechanism can be constructed to be usable on gates, doors and the like as well as windows, awnings, shutters and the like and on table tops, bench seats, shelves and the like.
In the use and operation of the folding bracket mechanism of this invention, it is seen that the same provides a simple and easily manufacturable folding bracket mechanism for supporting and moving a supported member such as a gate, a door, a window, or the like, which provides for positioning of the supported member in alternate and usable positions. An optional powered operator is provided to make the folding bracket mechanism easier for a person to use when it is used with large supported members or in remotely controlled applications.
As will become apparent from the foregoing description of the applicants folding bracket mechanism, relatively simple and inexpensive means have been provided for the mounting of a supported member such as a gate, a door, a window, or the like which allows for positioning of the supported member in alternate use positions. The mechanism structure is economical to manufacture, simple to use, and is readily adapted for the applications as disclosed herein as well as other applications. While the invention has been described in conjunction with preferred specific embodiments thereof, it will be understood that this description is intended to illustrate and not to limit the scope of the invention, which is defined by the following claims.
We claim:
1. A folding bracket mechanism, comprising:
a. a first brace support member,
b. a first brace member, pivotally connected in a first end portion on said first brace support member for swinging movement thereabout on a first axis,
c. a second support member spaced from said first brace support member,
(1. a second brace member pivotally connected in a first end portion on said second brace support member for swinging movement thereabout on a second axis parallel to said first axis, 9
e. a supported member pivotally connected to and supported by the opposite end portions of said brace members at points spaced different distances from one end of said supported member, said supported member movable in a plane parallel to said first and second axes,
f. said folding bracket mechanism being movable between a first position wherein said second brace member is generally perpendicular to a line through said support members and a second position wherein said brace members are parallel to said support members, and
g. said supported member having a channel member with said second brace member opposite end portion mounted therein and extending from the open side of said channel member, said second brace member being enclosed in said channel member when said folding bracket mechanism is in said first folded position.
2. The folding bracket mechanism of claim 1, wherein said folding bracket mechanism has a power means connected to said braces to move said folding bracket mechanism between said first position and said second position.
3. The folding bracket mechanism of claim 1, wherein:
a. said supported member is a gate, and
b. said first axis and said second axis are vertically disposed.
4. The folding bracket mechanism of claim 3, wherein:
a. said folding bracket mechanism has a plurality of said second brace members, and
b. said first and said second brace support members are spaced a substantially greater distance apart than said points on said gate which are connected with said second end portions of said first brace member and said second brace member.
5. The folding bracket mechanism of claim 4, wherein:
a. said folding bracket mechanism has a power means connected to said braces to move said folding bracket mechanism between said first position and said second position,
b. said power means has a motor means mounted on said gate and a gear means connecting said motor and said second brace member, and
c. said gear means has a shaft rigidly secured to said second end portion of said second brace member, a first gear secured to said shaft, and a second gear engaged with said first gear and secured to the output shaft of said motor.
6. The folding bracket mechanism of claim 1, wherein:
a. said supported member is a door or the like, and
b. said first axis and said second axis are generally horizontally disposed.
7. The folding bracket mechanism of claim 6, wherein:
a. said folding bracket mechanism has at least two of said first and said second. brace members,
b. said first and second support members are spaced a substantially greater distance apart than said points on said door or the like which are connected to said first brace member and said second brace member, and
c. said first brace member is constructed and adapted to in use overly or receive a portion of said second brace member when in said second folded position.
8. The folding bracket mechanism of claim 7, wherein:
a. said folding bracket mechanism has a power means to move said folding bracket mechanism and said door or the like between said first position and said second position,
b. said power means has a motor means mounted on said door or the like and a gear means connecting said motor means and said second brace member, and
c. said gear means has a first gear secured to said second end portion of said second brace member and a second gear engaged with said first gear and secured to the output shaft of said motor means.
9. The folding bracket mechanism of claim 7,
wherein:
a. said door or the like has a supporting structure including a door frame means or the like, with said door or the like closable into said door frame means, and
said first and second support members are mounted with said supporting structure between upper and lower portion of said door frame means or the like with said first support member being the lowest.
10. The folding mechanism. of claim 7, wherein:
a. said door or the like for a supporting structure including a door frame means or the like, with said door or the like closable into said door frame means, and
said first and second support members are mounted with said supporting structure having said first support member being substantially above said door frame means and said second support member being below said first. support member.
11. The folding bracket mechanism of claim 6, wherein:
a. said folding bracket mechanism has at least two of said first and second brace members,
b. said first and second support members are spaced substantially closer together than said points on said door or the like which are connected to said first brace member and said second brace member, and
c. said second brace member is constructed and adapted to in use overly or receive a portion of said first brace member when in said second position.
12. The folding bracket mechanism of claim 11, wherein:
a. said door or the like has a supporting structure including a door frame means or the like, with said door or the like closable into said door frame means or the like, and
said first and second support members are mounted with said supporting structure above said door frame or the like, with said first support mema. said supported member is a table top or the like, her being the lowest. and 13. Claims (15)

1. A folding bracket mechanism, comprising: a. a first brace support member, b. a first brace member, pivotally connected in a first end portion on said first brace support member for swinging movement thereabout on a first axis, c. a second support member spaced from said first brace support member, d. a second brace member pivotally connected in a first end portion on said second brace support member for swinging movement thereabout on a second axis parallel to said first axis, e. a supported member pivotally connected to and supported by the opposite end portions of said brace members at points spaced different distances from one end of said supported member, said supported member movable in a plane parallel to said first and second axes, f. said folding bracket mechanism being movable between a first position wherein said second brace member is generally perpendicular to a line through said support members and a second position wherein said brace members are parallel to said support members, and g. said supported member having a channel member with said second brace member opposite end portion mounted therein and extending from the open side of said channel member, said second brace member bEing enclosed in said channel member when said folding bracket mechanism is in said first folded position.
2. The folding bracket mechanism of claim 1, wherein said folding bracket mechanism has a power means connected to said braces to move said folding bracket mechanism between said first position and said second position.
3. The folding bracket mechanism of claim 1, wherein: a. said supported member is a gate, and b. said first axis and said second axis are vertically disposed.

The folding bracket mechanism of claim 3, wherein: a. said folding bracket mechanism has a plurality of said second brace members, and b. said first and said second brace support members are spaced a substantially greater distance apart than said points on said gate which are connected with said second end portions of said first brace member and said second brace member.
5. The folding bracket mechanism of claim 4, wherein: a. said folding bracket mechanism has a power means connected to said braces to move said folding bracket mechanism between said first position and said second position, b. said power means has a motor means mounted on said gate and a gear means connecting said motor and said second brace member, and c. said gear means has a shaft rigidly secured to said second end portion of said second brace member, a first gear secured to said shaft, and a second gear engaged with said first gear and secured to the output shaft of said motor.
6. The folding bracket mechanism of claim 1, wherein: a. said supported member is a door or the like, and b. said first axis and said second axis are generally horizontally disposed.

The folding bracket mechanism of claim 6, wherein: a. said folding bracket mechanism has at least two of said first and said second brace members, b. said first and second support members are spaced a substantially greater distance apart than said points on said door or the like which are connected to said first brace member and said second brace member, and c. said first brace member is constructed and adapted to in use overly or receive a portion of said second brace member when in said second folded position.

The folding bracket mechanism of claim 7, wherein: a. said folding bracket mechanism has a power means to move said folding bracket mechanism and said door or the like between said first position and said second position, b. said power means has a motor means mounted on said door or the like and a gear means connecting said motor means and said second brace member, and c. said gear means has a first gear secured to said second end portion of said second brace member and a second gear engaged with said first gear and secured to the output shaft of said motor means.

The folding bracket mechanism of claim 7, wherein: a. said door or the like has a supporting structure including a door frame means or the like, with said door or the like closable into said door frame means, and b. said first and second support members are mounted with said supporting structure between upper and lower portion of said door frame means or the like with said first support member being the lowest.
10. The folding mechanism of claim 7, wherein: a. said door or the like for a supporting structure including a door frame means or the like, with said door or the like closable into said door frame means, and b. said first and second support members are mounted with said supporting structure having said first support member being substantially above said door frame means and said second support member being below said first support member.

The folding bracket mechanism of claim 6, wherein: a. said folding bracket mechanism has at least two of said first and second brace members, b. said first and second support members are spaced substantially closer together than said points on said door or the like which are connected to said first bracE member and said second brace member, and c. said second brace member is constructed and adapted to in use overly or receive a portion of said first brace member when in said second position.

The folding bracket mechanism of claim 11, wherein: a. said door or the like has a supporting structure including a door frame means or the like, with said door or the like closable into said door frame means or the like, and b. said first and second support members are mounted with said supporting structure above said door frame or the like, with said first support member being the lowest.
13. The folding bracket mechanism of claim 11 wherein: a. said door or the like has a supporting structure including a door frame means or the like, with said door or the like closable into said door frame means or the like, and b. said first and second support members are mounted with said supporting structure between the upper and lower portions of said door frame means or the like with said second support member being the lowest.
14. The folding bracket mechanism of claim 1, wherein: a. said supported member is a table top or the like, and b. said first and second axes are generally horizontally disposed.
15. The folding bracket mechanism of claim 14, wherein: a. said first and second support members are mounted with an upright member, b. said first support member is mounted below said second support member, and c. said first and second support members are spaced a substantially greater distance apart than said points on said supported member which are connected to said first and second brace members.
