Description

(No Model.)

H. J. WBLDON.

EAR PROTECTOR.

No. 890,92 Patented 088.9, 1888.

8 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

HENRY J. WELDON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.

EAR- PROTECTO R.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 390,928, dated October 9, 1888.

Application filed January 19, 1888. Serial No. 261,268.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY J. WELDoN, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ear-Protectors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

The object of the invention is to utilize the ordinary sweat-band of a hat slightly changed to meet the requirements of thisinvention as an earproiector from excessive cold.

Figure 1 represents a hat embodying my invention with the sweat-band in its folded position within the hat. Fig. 2 represents it as in use. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of a portion of a hat, showing the supplemental sweat-band.

In the drawings, A represents a hat, which of course may be of any form or make, and B represents the sweat-band. This band may be of any Width; but, preferably, I purpose having it precisely as such bands are now made, with the exception that at each side I will make enlargements, (shown at a in Fig. 1,) and at a point, Z, I prefer to divide the band so that the enlargements may be pulled down, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to cover the ears. I line the inner side of the band with some thin but warm material, so that while fully protecting the car it does not add materially to the thickness of the material of the hat. It will be understood thatinstead of havingthese enlargements the band from the point where it is divided on each side may be of the same Width, and thus serve not only to protect the ear, but to protect the rear part of the head.

In order to provide some protection for the head, when the sweat-band proper is down,

(No model.)

against the roughness of the material of the hat,I insert a thin supplemental band, B, next to the inside of the hat and between itand the sweat-band proper, and against this the head bears when the sweat-band is pulled down and used as an earprotector.

I claim as my inventiou 1. In combination with a hat, a folding sweat band therefor secured to the inner lower edge of the hat, having its inner surface at points opposite the ears suitably lined, whereby, when the sweat-band is pulled down, the lined portions will cover and protect the ears, substantially as described.

2. In combination with a hat, a folding sweat-band having its outer surface composed of ordinary absorbent material, with its inner surface lined at points opposite the ears, whereby it may be pulled down to cover and protect the ears, and asupplemental band between the sweat-band and the hat, substan tially as described. Y

8. In combination with a hat, a folding sweat-band divided near the front upon each side and secured by its lower edge to the inner lower edge of the hat, the rear portion being enlarged upon each side opposite the ears and lined upon its inner side, the said rear portion being adapted to be pulled down to cover and protect the ears, substantially as described.

In testimony whereof Ihave signed my name to this specification in the presence of twosubscribing witnesses.

HENRY J. W ELDON.
