Patent EYESHADOW RECEPTACLE AND APPLICATOR Attempts have heretofore been made to provide in a practical manner powdered cosmetic eyeshadow in a convenient package including an eyeshadow powder receptacle and an applicator wand adapted to be removed from the receptacle with a quantity of the eyeshadow powder on the tip of the applicator wand, However, excess powder on the applicator tip is objectionable and wipers have been-employed in an effort to wipe excessive powder from the tip as the applicator wand is extracted from the receptacle.
Typically, the applicator tip is composed of polyurethane foam mounted on the wand. The tip extends into the powder in the receptacle and as the tip is pulled through the wiper some of the excess powder is'pressed against or embedded in the foam tip and'is released when the tip emerges from the wiper as dust which is undesirable.
Accordingly, therehas been a need for a simple, effective way of removing excess cosmetic powdered eyeshadow from the tip of an applicator as the tip is being withdrawn from the receptacle so that not only is the excess powder retained in the receptacle, but, also, the tip has only the amount of powder thereon as will enable proper application of thecosmetic to the region of the eye.
The present invention provides an eyeshadow powder receptacle and wand wherein the excess eyeshadow powder is effectively agitated or flicked from the foam tip of the wand without resorting to a wiping action, whereby the excess powder is retained in the receptacle and only the proper amount of the cosmetic remains on the tip for application to the region of the eye.
More particularly, the invention provides means cooperative between the receptacle neck, above the level of the powder in the base of the receptacle, and the wand of the applicator to laterally shift the tip of the wand in a series of agitating movements to shake or flick excess powder from the applicator tip while the tip is still in the receptacle above the level of thepowder in the base. i g I The lateral shifting or agitation of the wand is accomplished by forming a section of the wand, above the applicator tip, with a series of longitudinally spaced ridges successively engageable with a projection or abutment in the neck of the receptacle to deflect the wand laterally upon engagement of abutment with the ridges as the wand moves longitudinally. In the preferred forms the ridges are formed as parallel ribs whereby opposing sides of the wand have crests and valleys and abutments at corresponding opposite sides of the neck which are alternately confronted by the crests and valleys to effect and allow the lateral movement of the wand.
In one form the wand is provided with ribs the crests of which are of the same diameter as the circular wand,

As seen in the drawings, referring first to FIGS. 1 through 4, the invention comprises a molded plastic cosmetic eyeshadow powder receptacle R of suitable shape adapted-to receive. a quantity of eyeshadow powder P, as seen in FIG. 2, leaving a space 1 above the upper level of the powder when the receptacle is in an uprightpposition. A molded plastic closure cap C is adapted to be removeably connected to the receptacle R, and carries an applicator wand Wwhich extends downwardly into the receptacle and has at its lower end.-

As thus far described the components are more or less conventional, and when the .cap C is removed to extract the wand from the receptacle the tipTretains a quantity of the eyeshadow powder and constitutes an applicator.
In the illustrative embodimentthe receptacle R has an upper cylindrical neck 2 on a lower frusto-conical body 3 having a bottom closure disc 4 'frictionally engaged within a seat 5. In the "illustrated form, the -cap- C is generally cylindrical and has an upper cap portion- 6 provided with a downwardly extended skirt section 7 adapted to frictionally coengage' with the neck 2. of the receptacle R toretain the cap in place. The cap C has an inner tubular section 8 extending downwardly from.
the upper cap portion 6 in inwardly spaced relation to the inside wall 9 of the'neck v 2 .of the receptacle R.
The wand W includes an elongated body section 10,
having a reduced upper end 11 inserted into and frictionally eoengaged within the lower end'of the tubular V inner cap portion 8. At thelower end of the body 10 the body is provided with a reduced diameter elongated pin 12 and surrounded by an annular shoulder 13. The tip T comprises a generally cylindrical body 14 of suitable foam material such as polyurethane foam having an axially extending cavity 15 which receives the body pm 12:50 that the foam tip may be retained on the pin and in contact withthe shoulder 13 by a suitable adhesive.
In accordance with the present invention cooperatively engageable means 16 on the wand W and means 17 associated with the receptacle R are adapted to effect agitation or vibrating movement of the wand as it is removed from the receptacle when the tip T ismoving upwardly through the space 1 above the upper level of the powder P and from the neck 2, the agitation being caused by lateral oscillations of the wand W accompanied by shocks applied to the wand as a consequence of extraction of the wand from the receptacle. The lateral agitation of the wand tends to flick excess powder from the applicator tip T within the receptacle R so that excess powdered eyeshadow does not cling to the foam tip as the tip is removed from the receptacle.
In the form of FIGS. 2 through 4, the means 16 on the wand W cooperative with the means 17 within the receptacle neck 2 comprises irregularities 18 formed on the body of the wand W. The body 10 is formed with longitudinally extended flats 19 on its opposite sides whereby the irregularities 18 are discontinuous and comprise a plurality of interrupted thread segments. The irregularities are formed as alternate valleys 20 and ridges 21 on opposite sides of the body 10 of the want with the valleys and ridges at opposite sides of the body axially offset so that a valley at one side is diametrically opposed by a ridge at the side of the body. Such alternate valleys and ridges are circular in form or on transverse planes. The ridges 21 have a crest diameter in this form corresponding with the diameter of the body 10 of the wand W and the inner tubular portion 8 of the cap C.
In this form the means 17 in the neck 2 of the receptacle, cooperative with the means 16 on the wand W, just described, for effecting lateral agitation of the wand W, as it is extracted from the receptacle R, comprises a resilient spring unit 22 mounted in the neck 2 and having wand engaging spring fingers 23. The spring fingers-23 extend downwardly from a supporting collar 24 having an external bead 25 molded or disposed in an internal groove 26 adjacent the upper end of the neck 2 to retain the spring unit 22 within the neck 2 against the axial force applied to thespring arms upon extraction of the wand W. The spring fingers 23 extend downwardly and inwardly from the supporting collar 24, and the inturned finger tips 27 which engage the tubular inner portion 8 of the cap C and are normally held outwardly flexed by the body 8 the fingers have the inherent tendency to flex inwardly when the finger tips are located at a valley 20 on the body 10 of the wand W.
As seen in FIG. 3 when the wand W is being extracted upwardly the finger tips 27 will engage successive ridges 21 at one side of the body 10 to force the wand to the right as the finger tips of the other side of the body 10 are disposed in a valley 20. As the extraction of the wand continues the motion will be reversed as the finger tips in a valley engage the next successive ridge and move the wand laterally in the opposite direction. Thus, the wand is oscillated laterally and the spring fingers inpart additional shocks to the wand tending to vibrate the powdered material from the applicator tip T. The finger tips 27 may also apply a supplemental wiping action to the tip T during the last stage of movement of the tip from the receptacle.
Referring to the embodiment of FIGS. Sand 6 the means 16 on the wand W and the cooperative means 17 in the receptacle are of modified construction. In
this form the alternate ridges 2 1 which define the valleys 20' are spaced outwardly or are of a slightly larger crest diameter, as shown by the dimension X, than the diameter of the body of the wand. The crests of the ridges 21 are adapted to be engaged by an abutment 27' formed as an annular rib within the neck of the receptacle and having an inside diameter which is less than the diametrical distance between the ribs at opposite sides of the wand body. Thus, as seen in FIG. 6, as the body of the wand is moved upwardly through the neck of the receptacle, the abutment 27 will coengage alternate ridges 21 and effect oscillation of the wand as it is being extracted. Moreover, in this embodiment the applicator tip T may be of a size slightly larger than the body of the wand so that the abutment ring 27' applies a final wiping action to the applicator tip as the wand is fully extracted from the receptacle.
From the foregoing it is apparent that the invention provides a simple eyeshadow receptacle and applicator wherein the applicator wand is caused to be agitated or oscillated during extraction of the applicator whereby excess eyeshadow powder is effectively removed from the foam applicator tip with a flicking action.
We claim:
1. A receptacle and applicator for cosmetic powder comprising: a receptacle adapted to contain a quantity of the cosmetic powder, a cap for said receptacle, said cap having a wand, means for mounting said cap in said receptacle with said wand extending into said recepta- .cle and into said cosmetic powder, an applicator tip at the lower end of said wand, and cooperative vibratory means on said receptacle and on said wand responsive to longitudinal withdrawal of said wand from said receptacle to agitate said wand when said cap is removed from said receptacle as said wand is extracted from said cosmetic powder.
2. A receptacle and applicator for cosmetic powder as defined in claim 1, wherein said cooperative means comprises portions coengageable to effect opposite lateral oscillations of said wand. I

A receptacle and applicator for cosmetic powder comprising: a receptacle adapted to contain a quantity of the cosmetic powder, a cap for said receptacle, said cap having a wand, means for mounting said cap in said receptacle with said wand extending into said receptacle and into said cosmetic powder, an applicator tip at the lower end of said wand, and cooperative means on said receptacle and on said wand for agitating said wand when said cap is removed from said receptacle as said wand is extracted from said cosmetic powder, wherein said cooperative means comprises a succession of alternate ridges and valleys formed on said wand, and abutment means on said receptacle engageable with said ridges to move said wand laterally as said wand is extracted.
4. A receptacle and applicator for cosmetic powder as defined in claim 3, and means for moving said wand laterally in the opposite direction when successive ridges pass said abutment means.
5. A receptacle and applicator for cosmetic powder comprising: a receptacle adapted to contain a quantity of the cosmetic powder, a cap for said receptacle, said cap having a wand, means for mounting said cap in said receptacle with said wand extending into said receptacle and into said cosmetic powder, an applicator tip at the lower end of said wand, and cooperative means on said receptacle and on said wand for agitating said wand when said cap is removed from said receptacle as said wand is extracted from said cosmetic powder, wherein said cooperative means comprises a succession of alternate ridges and valleys on one of said receptacle and said wand, and abutment means on the other of said receptacle and said wand engageable with said ridges to move said wand laterally as said wand is extracted.
6. A receptacle and applicator for cosmetic powder as defined in claim 5, and means for moving said wand laterally in the opposite direction as said ridges and abutment pass.
7. A receptacle and applicator for cosmetic powder comprising: a receptacle adapted to contain a quantity of the cosmetic powder, a cap for said receptacle, said cap having a wand, means for mounting said cap in said receptacle with said wand extending into said receptacle and into said cosmetic powder, an applicator tip at the lower end of said wand, and cooperative means on said receptacle and on said wand for agitating said wand when said cap is removed from said receptacle as said wand is extracted from said cosmetic powder, wherein said cooperative means comprises a succession of alternate ridges and valleys on opposite side of said wand, said ridges and valleys at opposite sides of said wand being staggered with the ridges on one side pposed to the valleys on the other side of said wand, and abutment means on said receptacle and said wand engageable with said ridges successively at opposite sides of said wand to move said wand laterally.
8. A receptacle and applicator for cosmetic powder comprising: a receptacle adapted to contain a quantity of the cosmetic powder, a cap for said receptacle, said cap having a wand, means for mounting said cap in said receptacle with said wand extending into said receptacle and into said cosmetic powder, and applicator tip at the lower end of said wand, and cooperative means on said receptacle and on said wand for agitating said wand when said cap is removed from said receptacle as said wand is extracted from said cosmetic powder, wherein said cooperative means comprises a plurality of interrupted ridge segments on one of said wand and said receptacle, and abutment means on the other of said wand and said receptacle engageable with successive ridge segments.
9. A receptacle and applicator for cosmetic powder as defined in claim 8, said ridge segments being spaced longitudinally of said wand, and said abutment means being on said receptacle.
10. A receptacle and applicator for cosmetic powder as defined in claim 3, said abutment means including a spring finger having a tip normally biased into said valleys.
11. A receptacle and applicator for cosmetic powder as defined in claim 3, said abutment means comprising a shoulder on said body.
12. A receptacle and applicator for cosmetic powder as defined in claim 7, said abutment means including spring fingers at opposite sides of said wand and having tips engageable with successive ridges at opposite sides of said wand to oscillate said wand.
13. A receptacle and applicator 'for cosmetic powder as defined in claim 7, said abutment means including spring fingers at opposite sides of said wand and having tips engageable with successive ridges at opposite sides of said wand to oscillate said wand, said fingers being integral with a support ring, and means mounting said support ring in said receptacle.
14. A receptacle and applicator for cosmetic powder as defined in claim 7, said abutment means comprising a ring on said receptacle surrounding said wand.

Claims (14)
1. A receptacle and applicator for cosmetic powder comprising: a receptacle adapted to contain a quantity of the cosmetic powder, a cap for said receptacle, said cap having a wand, means for mounting said cap in said receptacle with said wand extending into said receptacle and into said cosmetic powder, an applicator tip at the lower end of said wand, and cooperative vibratory means on said receptacle and on said wand responsive to longitudinal withdrawal of said wand from said receptacle to agitate said wand when said cap is removed from said receptacle as said wand is extracted from said cosmetic powder.
2. A receptacle and applicator for cosmetic powder as defined in claim 1, wherein said cooperative means comprises portions coengageable to effect opposite lateral oscillations of said wand.
3. A receptacle and applicator for cosmetic powder comprising: a receptacle adapted to contain a quantity of the cosmetic powder, a cap for said receptacle, said cap having a wand, means for mounting said cap in said receptacle with said wand extending into said receptacle and into said cosmetic powder, an applicator tip at the lower end of said wand, and cooperative means on said receptacle and on said wand for agitating said wand when said cap is removed from said receptacle as said wand is extracted from said cosmetic powder, wherein said cooperative means comprises a succession of alternate ridges and valleys formed on said wand, and abutment means on said receptacle engageable with said ridges to move said wand laterally as said wand is extracted.
4. A receptacle and applicator for cosmetic powder as defined in claim 3, and means for moving said wand laterally in the opposite direction when successive ridges pass said abutment means.
5. A receptacle and applicator for cosmetic powder comprising: a receptacle adapted to contain a quantity of the cosmetic powder, a cap for said receptacle, said cap having a wand, means for mounting said cap in said receptacle with said wand extending into said receptacle and into said cosmetic powder, an applicator tip at the lower end of said wand, and cooperative means on said receptacle and on said wand for agitating said wand when said cap is removed from said receptacle as said wand is extracted from said cosmetic powder, wherein said cooperative means comprises a succession of alternate ridges and valleys on one of said receptacle and said wand, and abutment means on the other of said receptacle and said wand engageable with said ridges to move said wand laterally as said wand is extracted.
6. A receptacle and applicator for cosmetic powder as defined in claim 5, and means for moving said wand laterally in the opposite direction as said ridges and abutment pass.
7. A receptacle and applicator for cosmetic powder comprising: a receptacle adapted to contain a quantity of the cosmetic powder, a cap for said receptacle, said cap having a wand, means for mounting said cap in said receptacle with said wand extending into said receptacle and into said cosmetic powder, an applicator tip at the lower end of said wand, and cooperative means on said receptacle and on said wand for agitating said wand when said cap is removed from said receptacle as said wand is extracted from said cosmetic powder, wherein said cooperative means comprises a succession of alternate ridges and valleys on opposite side of said wand, said ridges and valleys at opposite sides of said wand being staggered with the ridges on one side opposed to the valleys on the other side of said wand, and abutment means on said receptacle and said wand engageable with said ridges successively at opposite Sides of said wand to move said wand laterally.
8. A receptacle and applicator for cosmetic powder comprising: a receptacle adapted to contain a quantity of the cosmetic powder, a cap for said receptacle, said cap having a wand, means for mounting said cap in said receptacle with said wand extending into said receptacle and into said cosmetic powder, and applicator tip at the lower end of said wand, and cooperative means on said receptacle and on said wand for agitating said wand when said cap is removed from said receptacle as said wand is extracted from said cosmetic powder, wherein said cooperative means comprises a plurality of interrupted ridge segments on one of said wand and said receptacle, and abutment means on the other of said wand and said receptacle engageable with successive ridge segments.
9. A receptacle and applicator for cosmetic powder as defined in claim 8, said ridge segments being spaced longitudinally of said wand, and said abutment means being on said receptacle.
10. A receptacle and applicator for cosmetic powder as defined in claim 3, said abutment means including a spring finger having a tip normally biased into said valleys.
11. A receptacle and applicator for cosmetic powder as defined in claim 3, said abutment means comprising a shoulder on said body.
12. A receptacle and applicator for cosmetic powder as defined in claim 7, said abutment means including spring fingers at opposite sides of said wand and having tips engageable with successive ridges at opposite sides of said wand to oscillate said wand.
13. A receptacle and applicator for cosmetic powder as defined in claim 7, said abutment means including spring fingers at opposite sides of said wand and having tips engageable with successive ridges at opposite sides of said wand to oscillate said wand, said fingers being integral with a support ring, and means mounting said support ring in said receptacle.
14. A receptacle and applicator for cosmetic powder as defined in claim 7, said abutment means comprising a ring on said receptacle surrounding said wand.
