SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 390,540, dated October 2, 1888.

Application filed April 27, 1888. Serial No. 272,072. (No model.)

To all 2071,0112, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDWIN V. \VHITAKER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Gloversville, in the county of Fulton and State of New York, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Gloves and Mittens; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,which form apart of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a view of the back of my improved glove. Fig. 2 is a plan of the pattern used for the back of my improved glove. Fig. 3 is a view of a similar pattern, with the difference only that the back and finger-pieces are cut from a single piece of leather instead of from two pieces, as in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4 is a view of the palm of the glove; and Fig. 5 is a cross-section on line at x, Figs. 1 and 4..

This invention has relation to an improvement in gloves and mittens of that kind which are provided with an elastic wrist-piece of knitted fabric or similar material, and has for its object to prevent tearing of the knitted wrist-piece in pulling on the cloth, and also to provide a stay or stiffener for the wrist-piece which will prevent it from wrinkling and shoving up upon the wrist.

With these objects in view my invention consists in the improved construction of the back of the glove, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

Reference being had to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the back of the glove, which is of t-heshape clearly shown in the drawings, and may be made either from a singlepiece 0f leather,or by the pattern-shown in Fig. 3, or by two or more pieces of leather, as by the pattern shown in Fig. 2. As it is common to make the backs of gloves and mittens from separate pieces of leather, I desireit to be understood that I lay no claim whatever to this feature, as it is entirely optional with the manufacturer whether he will make my improved back-piece from a single piece of leather or by piecing several parts together. In either case the back A is out so as to form a downwardlyprojecting flap, 13, extending downwardly to the lower edge of the elastic wristband G. This flap, and also the lower part of the back, of which it forms an extension, is cut out to form an opening, D, and is attached to the elastic or knitted wristband by stitching E along the edge of the open ing, and also along the outer edge of the flap or extension B, as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings.

In putting on the glove or mitten the fingers catch hold ofthe lower part, B, of the flap B, so that all the strain in pulling on the glove will come upon the flap and the back-piece of which it forms an extension, thus completely relieving the knitted fabric from strain, and thereby prevent it from becoming torn or stretched. The object in providing this flap with the aperture or opening D is to enable the elastic wristband to contract readily around the wrist after the glove has been put on, which it could not do so easily if the flap were in a solid piece. It will also be seen that this flap or extension not only serves as a hold in putting on the glove or mitten, but by its stiffness it forms a longitudinal stay or stiffener for the elastic wristband, thereby preventing it from wrinkling or crumpling up toward the cloth, so that the wristband will always maintain its proper position around the wrist.

Having thus described my invent.ion,l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States-- In a glove or mitten, the combination, with an elastic wristband, of a back-piece having a stiff or nonelastic piece or extension projecting beyond any other portion of the backpiece or palm of the glove and extending downward to the edge of the wristband and having an opening over the wristband, said extension and wristband being secured together around the edge of the extension and also around the edge of the opening.
