GAR COUPLING (No Model.)
w' fi NI'TED STATES FFICE.
ATENT SIMON J. FREEMAN, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSlG-NOR TO MARY FREEMAN, OF BRADFORD, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAR-consume;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 390,471, dated @etober 2, 1888.
Application filed Apt-112, 1888. Serial No. 269,259. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SIMON J. FREEMAN, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Gar-Goupling, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improvement in carcouplings, and has for its object to provide a car-coupling by means of which the coupling and uncoupling of cars may be readily effected without getting between the cars.
The invention consists in a car -coupling constructed and arranged as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the \views.
Figure 1 is an end view of acar, showing the invention applied with coupling-link in section. Fig. 2 is a side view in vertical section. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the draw-head in horizontal section, with coupling-link; and Fig. 4. is a detail of a portion of the link-operating mechanism.
In the construction of this invention a drawhead, 1, is formed with a projection or hook, 2, located within the drawdiead and extending from its bottom in an inclined direction rearward. The forward partof the bottom. of the interior of the draw-head is inclined, as at 3, the projection or hook 2 forming a continuation thereof. A coupling-link engages with the projection 2, the coupling-link 4 here shown consisting of a flat bar formed with a thick central portion, 5, and slotted ends 6. The coupling-link is thrown out of engagement with the projection 2 by the following means: At the rear of the hollow portion of the draw head 1 is located a verticallymovable U-shaped plate or projection, 7, the arms 8 of which are adapted to move past the end of projection 2. The bottom of the rear portion of the interior of draw-head l is formed with a recess, 8, adapted to receive the U- shaped plate or projection 7. The latter is formed with a vertical arm, 9, having recessed portion 9 adjacentto the plate 7, and projecting up through a slot, 10, in the top of drawhead 1, and is hinged, as at 11, to a verticallysliding plate, 12, having an arm, 13, projecting through a guide'bracket, 14, on the end of a car, 15. The vertical arm 9 is also formed with an inclined face, 10', by means of which the arm 9 is brought close to the end of hook 2. By means of having the vertical arm 9 hinged, endwise movement is permitted for engaging or disengaging the couplinglink with projection 2.
The plate or projection 7 is raised and lowered by means of one or the other of the levers 16, pivoted in brackets 17 on the end of the car, the inner ends of the levers 16 engaging, by means of slots 18, a pin, 19, in a bracket, 20, on plate 12. By having twolevers, 16, the uncoupling may be effected from either side of the car. If desired, the plate 12 may be extended to the top of the car, thereby permitting the uncoupling to be effected from that position.
In operation the end of link 4:, entering draw-head 1, slides up over the inclined portion 3 and the projection 2 and abuts against the vertical arm 9, forcing it back and permitting the slotted end 6 of link 4. to drop into engagement with projection 2, with the thick part 5 of link 4 resting against the bottom 3. The coupling is thus automatically effected. To uncouple the parts, it is simply necessary to raise the U-shaped plate 7 up to a level with the end of projection 2 by pulling down on one of the levers 16, which causes the slotted end 6 of link 4 to be moved up out of engagement with projection 2, the arm 9 swinging back to permit the disengagement. Any suitable means may be employcd for securing the lovers 16 to lock the coupling in coupled position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the draw head having a projection or horn, 2, in its bottom, a recess in rear thereof, and a slot in its top over said recess, of the verticallysliding and longitudinally n swinging arm extending up through said slot, and having a forwardly-extending projection on its lower end, a plate or bar to which said arm is hinged at its upper end, and means for moving the plate or bar vertically, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the draw-head having a horn or projection, 2, in its bottom, a recess in rear thereof, and a slot in its top above the recess, of the vertically-sliding and longitudinally-swinging arm 9, having a forwardly-extending projection on its lower end, an inclined front edge, 10, and a recess, 9, between the projection and lower end of said incline, and means for operating said arm, substantially as set forth.
3. In a car-coupler of the character described, thc link-operating arm 9, having a forwardly-extending projection, 7, on its lower end, an incline, 10, on its front edge, and a recess, 9, between the projection and the lower forwardly-projecting end of the incline, substantially as set forth.
4:. In a car-coupling, the draw-head 1, constructed with inclined projection or hook 2, recess 8 in rear thereof, and slot 10 in its upper portion, in combination with plate 7, having-arms 8 projecting past hook 2, and the vertical portion 9, with recess 9, extending up through slot 10, sliding plate 12, to which vertical arm 9 is hinged, having bracket 20. with pin 19, and sliding arm 13, located in bracket 14, and the operating-levers 16, pivoted in brackets 17 and having slotted ends 18,
engaging pin 19, substantially as described.
5. A car-coupling consisting of draw-head 1, formed with inclined projection or hook 2, recess 8 in rear thereof, and slot 10 in its top, vertical arm 9, projecting through slot 10 and formed with recess 9', and plate 7, with arms 8 projecting past hook 2, vertically-sliding plate 12, having arm 9 hinged thereto and formed with bracket 20, having pin 19, and arm 13. projecting through bracket 14, and the levers 16, pivoted in brackets 17 and having slotted ends 18, engaging pin 19, in combination with coupling link 4, formed with thickened central portion, 5, and slotted ends 6, substantially as described.
