SEXTUS CASE, OF LA GRANGE, "WISCONSIN.
DRAFT-EQUALEZER EBPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 390,450, dated October 2, 1888.
Application filed February 8, 1888. Serial No. 263,334. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SEXTUS CASE, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Grange, in the county of W'alworth and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Draft Equalizers or Eveners, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in draft equalizers or eveners; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the accompanying drawing the figure represents a plan view of an evener embodying the invention applied to the tongue and front of a reaper or mower.
The invention is essentially adapted for attachment to reapingmachines and harvesters, and, referring by letter to the drawing, A. designates the front of such a machine, B designating the tongue thereof.
b I) are hooks secured to the front of the reaper or harvester and serving to connect the detachable pulley-block G thereto.
D is a swinging bar, pivoted at its rear or inner end upon the tongue at a proper point, so as to turn thereon laterally in either direc tion and having the equalizing draft-bar E pivoted centrally to its front or outer end.
The said bar has the draft-hooks o c secured in its rear edge at equal distance on each side of its center, and engaging the respective ends of the cqnalizing-el1ai n F,which passes around the sheave of the block C.
At each endofthe equalizer-bar E is pivoted, or otherwise connected, by its center, a whittletree, G, to be used with a single horse each, the team then consisting of two.
To drive a team of more than two horses the whil'lletrees II H are pivoted or connected in the usual manner to the ends of each tree G, as shown in the figure.
By means of the hooks I) I) the block 0 can be set more or less to one side to bring the draft to bear on the tongue when the horses are more or less to one side, the block being set on the side from the tongue opposite that on which the greater number of horses stand.
In practice, instead of employing hooks to connect the pulley-block, I employ a clevis with one or more holes, so that said clevis can be moved right or left to take off side draft.
The only feature of novelty on which I lay claim is the attachment of the pulley-block O by a series oihooks or by a clevis to the front sill of the machine, on one side of the tongue. I am aware that the combination of the pivoted bar I), the evcner-bar E, and the chain and pulley is old in the art. An instance of this use may be seen upon reference to the patent of E. B. Bird, 363,359. In this patent the pulley is secured to the tongue and cannot be adjusted right and left. The pulley is rigidly fastened to the tongue, and for this reason the device will not work satisfactorily in a harvester, as it will throw all the draft on the horse that is next to the grain.
In my invention the pulley is off to one side of the tongue, and can be moved right or left.
This feature of the adjustability of the pulley and its attachment to one side of the tongue, while it is all I claim, yet its adaptability and actual merit for the particular purpose cannot he too highly estimated.
Having described my invention, I claim- The herein-described draft equalizer, comprising the pnlley-block 0, adj ustably fitted to the front sill, A, of theharvcster, by means of hooks 7), or their equivalent, as above described, the attachment of the pulley-block to the sill being on one side of the tongue, the usual bar, D, pivoted to the tongue, the ordinary evencrhar, E, pivoted to the bar D, and the chain F, attached to the evener-bar and passed through and around the pulleyblock 0, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed mysignaturein pres ence of two witnesses.
SEXT US CASE.
