Between the sleeve or bushing f and the follower or bonnetf and the opposite ends of the hub or centera of the wheel A are arranged paekings consisting of metal rings g land india rubber. or other Aelastic packing washers, g2. The metal packing-rings g and I the elastic packing-washers g2 fit snugly within the inner ends of the hubs or bosses e, but are not in contact with the wheel-shaft, which passes freely through them, the inner ends fof the packing-rings being in contact with the outer ends of the wheel hub or center, and the 5 elastic washers being between the metal rings and the ends of the bushing and follower. The outcr'end of the hub e of the casing is closed air-tight by'a cap or bonnet, e2, through which are inserted adj ustingscrews c, bearingon the sleeve or bushing f, and a screw, e, bearing onl the end of the shaft B. By means of the I. screw e* and the bolts g the wheel may be properly adjusted in the easing,and by means of the screws e all wear in the packings g' g2 may betaken up. By means of these packings dirt v'and grit are prevented from getting into the shaft-bearings, and leakage through and past the shaftbearings is prevented.
I will now vdescribe the construction of the V'wheel A and its combination ywith the casing,
which are important features of my invention. In what I now consider a preferable form the wheel consists of flat plates or disks a',

As shown in Fig. 2, the blades a are of segmental form and work in near proximity to the inner circumference of the annular channel Dit; but they do not project nearly to'the` outer wall of the channel, and beyond their outer edges there'is formed in the channel a water-way of sufficient capacity to permit the4 passage of large solid bodies without choking the pump or cramping the wheel. The sections DD of the casing are 'constructed'with a circular series of lugs or bearers, (Z2, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and any two of these bearers may rest upon the feet or legs d3.' This provides foi` adjusting the pump-casing 'so that the suction and discharge nozzles D2 D3 will have any. desired poeffgion. The pump-casing may be arranged so that said nozzles will be equally above and belw a hori zontal plane intersecting the axis of the pump,

3, or so thatthe two nozzles lwill have the position shown in Fig. 4 or any other desired position. v,
The nozzles D'Ds are preferably curved and have their flanged facesloated at equal angles relatively to a line, ss, drawn midway between them and intersectiiig the axis of the pump, and this construct-ion enables both casing-sections D'D to' be cast from a single pattern,

as to'take suction lfrom and discharge vinto horizontal pipes. When the pump isshifted to the position shown in Fig. 4, or to any other direction, the elbows or bends E may be set as desired to give the pipes the desired direction, either in line with the plane of the wheels motion or at a right or other angle thereto.
The v,pump may be run either right or left handed todischarge either in the same direction-by reversing the top for the bottom, orto discharge in an opposite direction by reversing the wheel-shaft end for end.
It will be observed that the side plates or disks, a', of the wheel form substantially continuous and unbroken surfaces frm the shaft outward to their circumference. This is imporhaving an annular channel, D23-of approxi-y taut, as the sand and grit are thereby allowed a free space between the side plates through which to fall, and by the continuons -surfaces of the side plates sand and grit are prevented from reaching the shaft-bearings and packings. f Y
I dise the term substantially continuous and uniform surfaces, as applied to the side plates, to distinguish my wheel from the wheel of a blower or pump in which the blades are supported by arms radiating from a central shaft, or between plates of annular form having large openings around the shaft and snpported on the shaft by spiders or arms.
lVhat 'I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a pump-casing having an annular channel, Dit, provided with suction and discharge nozzles fI)l2 D, and of substantially uniform caliber throughout its circumference, save for an abutment between the said nozzles, the portion of. the casing between the channel and the center being contracted and of less width than the channel, of a rotary pump-wheel turning'in the contracted central portion of the casing, and having blades which project Vbeyond its periphery and are flared outward frorn'its sides, and which project into and work snugly in the portion of the channel nearest the center of the casing and afford. a free water-way beyond the outer edges of the blades, substantially as herein described.
2. The combination, with a pump-casing mately circular transverse section, provided with suction and discharge nozzles D2 D, and of substantiallyuniform caliber throughout its circumference, save for an abutment between the said nozzles, the portion of the casing between the channel and the center `being'ontracted and of less widththau thechannel, of a rotary pump-wheel turning inthe contracted central portion of the casing and havingblades `whichproject beyond its periphery and are flared outward from its sides, and which project intoand work snugly in the portion of the channel nearest the center of the casing,
but which terminate inward of thecenter ot" the channel, and therefore afford afree waterblades,sub-
to their outercircumferencc,and between which a space is afforded for falling dirt and grit, l

5. The combination, with a pump-casing having near its periphery an annular channel provided with suction and discharge nozzles,'
both of which communicate directly with the channel, of ashaft and a rotary pump-wheel consisting of a hub or center, side plates secured to said hub' and forming substantially continuous and unbroken surfaces from the shaft to their circumference and affording between them a space for falling dirt and grit,and blades secured to the side plates and projecting beyond their outer edges into said channel, substantially as'herein described.
6. The combination, with a pump-casing having near its' periphery an annular channel provided with suction and discharge nozzles, both of which communicate directly with the channel, of a shaft and a'rot-ary pump-wheel secured thereon and consisting ofsidc plates, a', lforming substantially continuons and unbrokeu surfaces from the shaft to their circn n1- ference; and ailording betweenV them aspace for falli ug dirt and grit, and blades u?, projecting Vbeyond the side plates into the channel, and having cars n.5 projecting at right. angles,
vand by which they are secured betweenihe side plates, substantially as herein described.
7. The combination, with a .rotary pump-` wheel, of a casing having an annular channel provided with suction and discharge nozzles D'l D and made in two halves or sections, each of whichis a fac-simile of the other, and which lare lunited by a joint which is continuous through the nozzles, the two nozzles being, curved uniformly, but in opposite directions IOO from a line drawn midway between them :and
intersecting the axis of thepump, and the faces of the nozzles having similar but reverse angles relatively to said line, whereby provision is afforded for casting the tivo halves or sec' tions from one pattern, substantially as herein described.
8. The combination of a rotary pump-wheel I and a casing having an annular channel provided with suction and discharge nozzles curved uniformly in opposite directions from aline drawn midway between them and intersecting the axis of the pump, and having their faces at Ithe same but reverse angles relatively to said line and bends, each forming one-eighth (t) of acircleand secured to the nozzlcs,where by the pump is adapted for use with either horizontal or vertical suction and discharge i pipes by simplyreversing the position of the 'to the casing, and screws el, bearing on the sleeve or bushingf and serving to` tighten both packing's, substantially as herein described.
10. rlhe combination, with the pump-casing and the shaft and rotary pump-Wheel, of'packings immediately surrounding the shaft` on. opposite sides of the wheel-hub, the sleeve or bushing f, forming one of the shaft-bearings and fitting within' the hub e ofthe casing, the cap e outside the sleeve or bushing f, and the screws e et, inserted through the cap e2, and serving, respectively, to adjust the sleeve or bushingf to just the shaft, substantially as herein deseribed.\ v

The combination, with a 'rotary pump- Wheel, of a casing composed of similar halves or sections, each having a circular series of ears or bearers, di, projecting laterally from its outer side near the circumference, and feet or legs d, made separate from each other and from the casing, and on the upper surface of which the two halves or sections of the casing are supported independently of each other through the ears or bearers d2, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.

The combination, with a rotary pump wheel, of a casing composed of similar halves or sections D D', having separate and inde tighten the packings and toadpendent legsor feet, whereby they are indil vidually supported, and an intermediate foot or leg, di, supporting the inner sect-ion, D', at itsjoint, substantially as and for the purpose herein described,
