SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 390,297, dated October 2, 1888.

Be it known that LOLARENOE J. HAMILTON, a citizen of the United States,residing at Plymouth, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air-Guns, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in spring air-guns; and the invention consists in the improved construction and operation of the barrel, all as more fully hereinafter described.
In the drawings which accompany this speei fication, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved gnn. Fig. 2 is a vertical central longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section of a part of the barrel. Fig. 4 is an enlarged section of the breech of the barrel. Figs. 5 and G are plans of the under side of the barrel, showing the barrel open and closed; and Fig. 7 is a cross-section on line :0 a in Fig. 6.

My present improvement consists in the novel construction of the breeclrblock L and the true barrel M.
Within the false barrel B, which I preferably make of sheet metal, in imitation of a gun-barrel of ordinary type, I secure a suitable filling of wood, N, and provide it with the longitudinal bore 0, and within this bore 0 the true barrel M is adapted to slide longitudinally from and toward the breech-block L to close and disclose the opening a in the breech-block.

An opening, P, is cut through the under side of the false barrel, near the breech-block, and this opening communicates with the slot Q; and through this slot a convenient fingerpicce, R, seen red to the barrel, projects to per mit of its easy movement lengthwise and to lock it in closed position against the seat b in the breech-block by giving it a little turn to one side, so as to engage the finger-piece R upon the shoulder c. The finger-piece R is preferably in the form of aset-screw, whereby the sliding friction of the true barrel may be increased or diminished. The opening P in the barrel leads into the half-circular loadingchamber S, which is sufficiently large to permit the operator to insert a dart into the breech of the barrel or to secure a bullet upon the seat I). To hold the bullet from accidental displacement in the operations of loading and shooting, I form this seat b of conical shape, as shown in Fig. 4, which permits of wedging the bullet firmly into the seat by a slight pressure of the finger and a small annular recess, d, is formed around the top of the seat to re ceive the breech of the barrel, which is preferably made slightly tapering to seat into the corresponding shoulder or recess d. To insure a perfect seat, the shoulder 0, upon which the finger-pieee R is engaged, is made slightly angular.
To prevent the loadingchamber from wearing out by the frequent action of loading, it is preferably provided with a suitable metallic lining, T, extending more or less around the chamber. To make the breech more accessible for loading, I preferably incline the true barrel within the false barrel, so as to bring the breech close to the under side, while the discharge end may be kept in the middle of the barrel to preserve the appearance, the sights U being properly adjusted to offset this angularity.
This construction of the breech leaves a finished and unbroken appearance of the gunbarrel in close imitation of a fire-arm. The
loading-chamber being on the under side prevents moisture from easily getting into it, and it requires a position for loading which increases the safety in handling, which in this class ofguns, designed for the younger generation, is desirable and decreases the chances of accidents.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In an air-gun, the combination, with a false barrel, of a true barrel rotaril y and loosely fitted in said false barrel and confined entirely within the false barrel and adapted to slide longitudinally therein to and from the breech block, substantially as and for the purpose specified. v
2. The combination, with the false barrel having the recess P, the slot Q, communicating therewith, out upon its under side, of the lockingshoulder c at the edge of said slot, the true barrel M, slidingly and rotarily secured within the false barrel, and the finger-piece R on such barrel for engaging the shoulder c, all combined to operate substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the true barrel M, slidingly and rotarily secured within the false barrel, of the loading-chamberS and the taperingseat I) in the false barrel serving as a breechclosure for the true barrel, substantially as described.
4. The combination of the false barrel B, the true barrel M, slidingly and rotarily secured within said false barrel and inclined thereto, and the loading-chamber S, formed in the under side of the false barrel, substantially as described.
5. The combination, with the false barrel, of the true barrel slidingly and rotarily secured therein, the loading-chamber S, the recesses P Q, formed in the underside of the false barre], the locking-shoulder c at the side of such recesses, the finger-piece R on the true barrel, and the tapering seat bill the breech-block to receive the same, all combined to operate substantially as described.
6. The combination, with the barrel M, slidiugly and rotarily secured within the false barrel and having its lower end conically chamfered, of the breech-block L, provided with the aperture (1, the conical seat b, and the annular recess (1, the parts being arranged to operate substantially as described.
