DEVICE FOR OPENING AND CLOSING RAILWAY-SWITCHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 390,181, dated September 25, 1888.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM MoGLosKEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans 5 and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Opening and Closing Railway- Switches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying d rawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in automatic railway-switches, which will be fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top view of the improved switch. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through Fig. 1 in theplane indicated by dotted line was thereon. Fig. 3 is an enlarged'top view of the switch-head chair, showing the ends of three rails bearing thereon. Fig. 4 is a top andside view of one of the wheels used on the locomotive to actuate the switch-rails.
Referring to the annexed drawings by letter, A A A A designate the main-track rails,
which are rigidly spiked down upon the crossties R, that may be secured to longitudinal sleepers P.
B B designate the side-track rails, the ends of which, and also the ends of the switch rails O O, are supported upon switch-head chairs S S.
O O designate the laterally-movable switchrails,whicl1 are connected together by tie-rods 5 D D. One of the switch-rails is pivoted at H to a cross-tie, and the other switch-rail is free to slide endwise between parallel guideextensions I I of one of the main-track rails, A. The free ends of these switchrails are 0 supported upon the two switch-head chairs S S. Both of these chairs have raised side flanges,
and the chair S is recessed at a a to receive tenons formed on those ends of the rails A B which rest upon it.
E E designate two horizontal levers vertically pivoted to blocks J J outside of the rails A A and supported upon plates 9 9. These levers are connected by links or chains K K to the switclrrails O O, and they are also connected by chains F F to the vertically-movable ends of twospring-bars, L L.arrauged parallel to the rails A A, and rigidly secured to a cross-tie,O. The chains F pass through apertures in the necks of the rails A A and over pulleys 12 therein. (Shown in Fig. 2.) These bars L L are supported upon coiled springs N N, and they have secured upon them beveled blocks M M, slightly raised above the plane of the track.
For the purpose ofactuating the switch-rails to shift a train from the main track upon a side track, or to shift the switch from a side track into line with the main track, I employ rollers V, (shown in Fig. 4,) which are verti cally adjustably applied to the locomotive and 6 suitably placed under control of the engineer. These rollers are so arranged relatively to the blocks M M on the spring-bars L that when either one of said rollers is depressed it will depress a spring-bar L and shift the switch to the desired position.
What I claim is 1. The combination,with the main and side track rails, of connected switch-rails, one of which is provided at H and the other arranged 7 to move between guides II, the switch-head chairs, levers connected to said switch-rails, the vertically-movable spring-bars L, provided with beveled blocks, and the flexible connections F of these bars passing over pul- 8o leys p and connected to said levers, all constructed and adapted to operate substantially as described. I
2. The recessed switclrhead chair S,in combination with the rails A B, having tenons on their ends fitted into said recesses,as described. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
