UNITED STATES EATENT GFFICEQ MADISON G. STANLEY AND \VILLIAM F. JONES, OF KENTON, TENNESSEE.
WEATHER-BOARD HOLDER AND GAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 390,041, dated September 25, 1888.
Application filed October 8,1887. Serial No. 251,856, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, MADISON G. STANLEY and WILLIAM F. JONES, citizens of the United States, residing in Kenton, in the county of Gibson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Oombined Weather-Board Holder and Gage; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying draw ing, in which the figure illustrates a perspective view of our improved combined weatherboard holder and gage.
This invention pertains to certain improvementsin a combined weather-board holder and gage having for their object to dispense with driving nails in the previously-put-on boards to temporarily support in position each subsequently-put-on board whileit is being nailed or permanently secured in place.
A further object is to effect the ready application of the holder and gage for use and the expeditious gaging of the amount of lap given the weather-boards.
The invention therefore consists of a support or holder adapted for temporary application or attachment to the weather-boards, and having an adjustable graduated bar, and of such a support or holder having, in addition to means for its application or attachment to the weatherboarding, as aforesaid, a lateral extension at its upper end, combined with an adjustable graduated bar or gage held or disposed in said lateral extension, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In carrying out our invention we employ a support or holder, 1, of convenient shape for handling, having applied to one side, at its upper end, a plate, 4, which is provided with teeth or spurs a a, which project above the said upper end of the support or holder. The support or holder 1 is provided at its upper end with a lateral extension, a, a portion of the upper surface of which, together with a portion of the same surface of the support or holder, is horizontal, as at a, while the remaining portion thereof is downwardly inclined, as at a A is the gage or support proper, which consists of a graduated bar with its upper end provided with a forwardly-projecting arm, a.
The gage A passes through an aperture or passage, 0, extending through the lateral exten sion at of the support or holder, within which it is held bya holding and adjusting screw, 3, working in the front side of said extension and engaging with the gage. The upper end of the holder or stock A, at its front side, is formed with an extension, a, which forms a further extension of the lateral extension a, which extension a is curved out or inclined upon its under side, as a This construction permits of the application of the blow of the hammer or implement to the under side of the head thus formed upon the stock or holder, in order to secure the latter in place preparatory to putting up the weather-boarding. By the arrangement of the gage-bar in the lateral extension at itis disposed to one side of the stock or holder, thus taking it out of the wayof ap plying force to the head or upper end of the holder in tapping or striking it with a hammer or other suitable implement thereat, which is practiced in removing it from the weatherboarding.
In applying our combined weather board holder and gage the shank of the holder is V grasped by the hand and so manipulated as to permit of the insertion of the teeth or spurs a a between the first-put-on weather-board and the studding and successively between the previously-puton weather-board and each subsequently-put-on weather-board, it being understood that two of these holders and gages are in practice to be used, one for each end of the weather-board. The teeth or spurs a a are forced up behind the weatherboarding until the horizontal surface a a of the upper end of the holder or support 1 is in contact with the lower edge of the weather-boarding.
The gage Ais, after thus introducing the teeth the previously-put-on Weather-boards to temporarily support the subsequentlyput on weather boards until nailed or permanently secured in place. It also permits of the ready application of the device for use and the expeditious gaging of the required amount of lap to be given to the wcather-boards, while in itself it is simple, easy of manipulation, and cheap, which are desiderata, especially in this class of implements.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combined weather-board holder and gage combining the support or stock provided at its upper end with a side or lateral extension, and upon its front side, at the same end, with an additional extension, the under side of which latter extension is inclined or curved, the toothed plate applied to the stock or holder at the upper end, the graduated gagebar having a forwardly-extending arm and disposed in said lateral extension at one side of the stock or holder, and the adjusting and holding screw working in the front side of said lateral extension, substantially as set forth.
2. The combined weather-board holder and gage combining the support or stock provided at its upper end with a side or lateral extension, and upon its front side, at the same end, with an additional extension, the under side of which latter extensionisinclined or curved, a portion of which end of stock or holder, as also of the lateral extension, is horizontal, while the remaining portion thereof, as also ofthe additional extension, is inclined, the toothed plate applied to the stock or holder at the upper end, the graduated gagebarhaving a forwardly-extending arm and disposed in said lateral extension at one side of the stock or holder, and the adjusting and holding screw working in the front side of said lateral extension, substantially as set forth.
