B. H. MUNRO.
DROP REACH FOR BUGGIES.
No. 389,821. Patented Sept. 18, 1888.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE...
ROBERT H. MUNRO, OF MOLINE, ILLINOIS.
DROP-REACH FOR BUGGIE3.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,821, dated September 18, 1888.
Application filed June 26, 1888.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ROBERT H. MUNRO. a citizen of the United States, residing at Moline, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drop-Reaches for Buggies; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to running-gear forvehicles, and has for its object the provision of a reach or coupling pole that will have its middle portion deflected, and which can be quickly and cheaply constructed, utilizing short pieces of wood which otherwise would go to waste.
The reach is composed of metal and wood, the metal being two ogee-eurved castings having sockets or recesses to receive the ends of the pieces of wood, and the wood being short straight pieces, generally such as is cast aside for fire-wood.
The improvement consists of the peculiar construction and combination of the parts, which hereinafter will be more fully described and claimed, and shown in the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a runninggear embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a perspective View, parts being broken away,of the front coupling; Fig. 3, a perspective View,
parts being broken away,of the rear coupling; Fig. 4, a perspective view of a modification; and Fig. 5, a plan view, parts being broken away, of a modified form ofreach.
The running-gear, of usual construction, is composed of the front axle, A, the rear axle, A, the head block B, the fifth-wheel (J, the rear hounds,D, and the reach or coupling pole E, which may be single, as shown in Fig. 1, or double, as shown in Fig. 4.
The reach has its middle portion deflected or dropped down and its ends in about the same plane, and is composed of the front casting, F, the rear casting, G, and the wooden Serial No. 278,221. (No model.)
pieces H and I. The castings have the form of an ogee curve, to bring their ends in different planes, and the end of the casting F is provided with the flangef, which rests against the head-block B, and is secured thereto by suit able fustenings. adapted to receive the ends of the wooden pieces H and I, and to this end the castings The ends of the castings are are made hollow or are open on their under the piece I is secured to the rear casting, G,
and to the rear axle, A.
The foregoing features of construction will be carried out in the formation of a double reach, the only difference being that the rear end of the casting F will be separated or bifurcated, and there will be two castings, G,
two pieces, H", and two pieces, 1'.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The herein described reach or coupling pole for vehicles, composed of front and rear ogeecurved castings and separate pieces between and at the ends ofthe castings, the middle portion of the reach being dropped down and having its ends in about the same plane.
2. In a running-gear for vehicles, the combination of the reach having its middle portion deflected or dropped down and composed of two ogee curved castings and two wooden pieces, the front casting being flanged and secured to the head-block, and the rearhounds having their front ends bolted to the sides of the lower-end ofthe rear casting, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT H. MUNRO.
