STUMP-EXTBLAGTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 38,975, dated June 23, 1863.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, V. K. MooDY, of Hartford, in the county of \Vashington and State of Visconsin, have invented a new and Improved Device for Extracting Stumps and Elevating and Carrying Stone and other Heavy Bodies; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of thisspecification, in which Figure 1, is a side elevation of my invention, partly in section as indicated by the lines as, m, Fig. 2. Fig. 2, is a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
This invention consists in the employment or use of a windless, lever, and ratchet and a chain and hook, arranged in such a manner that a good and efficient leverage power is obtained within a limited space.
The invention further consists in a novel application of wheels to the framing of the machine whereby said framing may be readily lowered and adjusted in a working position, and also readily raised so as to be supported by the wheels when the machine is to be moved or transported from place to place.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a bed piece which has a slightly inclined position and is supported at one end by a caster-wheel B, and is secured at its opposite end to a crossbar C which has two inclined pendant bars a, a, attached to it at each end. The lower ends of the bars a, a, each pair, being attached to a base plate Z).
D, D, represents two vertical sliding bars which are fitted in guides F, attached to the cross-bar C, and to horizontal bars G attached to the pendant bars a, a. In the lower end of each bar D there is fitted a wheel H, and in the upper parts of said bars there are placed cams I, I, one in each. These cams are allowed to work freely in slots in said bars D, and they are connected at their front ends to the under side of the cross-bar C, by joints C as shown in Fig. l. The cams I, I, have handles J attached to them by which the cams are operated. By forcing down the handles J, the cross bar C, will be raised, and the base plates 6 elevated above the surface of the ground so that principal part of the machine will be supported by the wheels H, H, and the handles when lowered are retained in proper position by hooks (Z. On releasing the handles and elevating them the cross-bar C and base plates will be lowered so that the latter will rest upon the ground. InFig. 1, the latter position is shown in red and the former one in black outlines.
K, represents an upright framing which is composed of two uprights c, 6, connected at their upper ends by a cross piece f. Between the uprights e, e, at their lower parts there is placed a ratchet wheel L, which has a grooved periphery to receive a chain M, the latter being attached to the ratchet at one end and having a hook N at its free or disengaged end see Fig. 1.
O, is a lever which works freely on the axis g, of the ratchet L and is provided with a pawl h, which engages with the ratchet. At the end of the bed-piece A which is directly over the cross bar C there is a holding pawl 2' which engages with the ratchet. The lever O, is directly over the bed piece A, and it has a cord j attached to it which passes over on a pulley la, in the upper part of the framing K, and in the outer or disengaged end of the lever 0 there is fitted a pulley Z over which a chain or rope m passes, one end of said chain or rope being attached to the lower or depressed end of the bed piece A, as shown at m, and the other end attached to a windless P, in the lower or depressed end of the bed-piece.
The operation is as'followswhen the implement is brought to the place where it is to be operated the base-plates b are lowered so as to rest upon the ground by freeing the disengaged ends of the cam handles J, and the lever O is elevated by pulling the cord J. The lever is shown partially elevated in red in Fig. 1. The chain M, with the aid of the hook N, is then attached to the stump, stone or other article to be raised and carried and the Windlass P turned so that the lever 0 will be drawn down toward the bedpiece. As the lever O is thus moved or operated its pawl it, turns the ratchet L and the chain M is wound up on the former and the stump, stone or other article elevated. The latter when the lever O is relieved from the pull of the Windlass, being held up by the holding pawl z. The cam handles J are then forced down and the cams I raise the cross bar C and bar-plates b so that the machine will be supported by the wheels H, and the machine with its load may be drawn to any desired spot.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
1. The combination of the lever 0, provided with pawl h ratchet L with chain M attached and the Windlass P, all arranged and placed on a suitable framing to operate W. K. MOODY.
