UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NOAH V AN ALLEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DOOR OR WINDOW STOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,680, dated September 18, 1888.
I Application filed January 27, 1688. Serial No.262.105. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NOAH VAN ALLEN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door and Window Stops, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates particularly to an improvement in the stops employed in the construction of door and window frames to form an abutment for the door or window, while serving also to cover the crack between the door or window and jambs. As the abutmentfaces of these stops,as well as the door or window, are rarely straight, a perfectly weather tightjoint between the two when the door or window is closed is seldom obtained.
My invention consists in providing a stop with a longitudinal groove and arranging in said groove a packing-strip of elastic material, the said strip being of less thickness than the width of the groove and secured in said groove at its inner edge only, so that it can be retracted within the groove to permit the door to have a full bearing on the stop.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of a part of a portal provided with door-stops embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same with the door closed. Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross-section of the jamb and attached stop.
In carrying my invention into practice the stops A, which are a common article of commerce, are molded or formed with a central longitudinal groove, B, in their abutment-face,
and in the groove is seated and secured a strip, 0
said groove at its inner edge only, with its outer portion free, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, so that the strip can be retracted wholly within the groove to permit the door E or window to come to a bearing on the face of the stop, and the strip will be held firmly against the door to make a tight joint, as shown in Fig. 2. The stopsAthus equipped are secured in the usual way to the jambs D in the process of building, and thus serve to perform both the usual functions of stops and of the common detachable weather strips without having any of the manifest disadvantages of the latter.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture, a door or window stop having a longitudinal groove formed in its abutment-face and a strip of elastic material of less thickness than the width of the groove and secured in said groove at its inner edge, with its outer portion free and projecting from the face of strip, substantially as described, whereby the strip can be retracted within the groove to permit the door or win-- dow to have a bearing on the face of the stop and the strip will be held firmly against the door to make a tight joint, as set forth.
NOAH VAN ALLEN.
