1 PACKING. N0. 389,564. Patented S.ept.'18, 1888.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY R. GILLINGHAM, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO SAMUEL G. B. COOK, OF SAME PLACE.
PACKING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,564, dated September 18, 1888.
Application filed January 21, 1888.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY R. GILLINGHAM, of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itpert-ains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in packings; and it consists in the combination of a suitable body or thickness of paper or other similar elastic or non-elastic material, a
sheet of tin, lead, or other metallic foil, and a covering or protector for the outer side of the foil, composed of oiled paper or cloth, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to provide a packing for packages, cans, and vessels of all kindsin which fluids are to be transported or kept, and which is thoroughly water, kerosene, and oil proof in every way, so as to prevent leakage in case the inclosing case or bottle in which the oil or other fluid is being transported or kept becomes accidentally broken.
Figure 1 is an enlarged vertical section of a piece of the packing alone. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of a can, showing how and where the packing is to be used.
In making this packing I make a body, A, from asuitable thickness of paper or other similar tough flexible material which is either elastic or non-elastic, as may be preferred. Over one surface of this body A is glued, cemented, or pasted a sheet of tin, lead, or other metallic foil, B, which serves to prevent oil, kerosene, or other liquid penetrating substances from Serial No. 261,485. (No model.)
having access to the body A, through which they would readily penetrate. As this foil B is very thin and delicate and liable to be injured by friction, it becomes necessary to form a protection for it, and this is done by pasting over the outer face of the foil a sheet of paper, 0, cloth, or other similar like flexible substance which has been soaked in oil, and thus made water-proof.
As neither kerosene, oil, nor water can penetrate this packing, it will readily be seen that no leakage can possibly take place from the jacket, can, or case in which the fluid is being transported. As a general thing, the body A has suificient elasticity to enable it to conform to the shape desired but it is immaterial whether this body is elastic or not.
Although this packing is especially intended for metal boxes, cans, and other such articles, it can be applied wherever an absolutely-tight joint is necessary.
No claim is made in this application to the covered box having an internal flange, for this is shown in another pending application bearing Serial No. 261,486.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- A packing composed ofa body of tough flexible material, a sheet of tin or other foil applied thereto, and a flexible water-proof protection or covering for the foil, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I ai'iix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
