NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
W. DOWELL, OF HIOKSVILLE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN; DOUBLE-TREES.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, W. DOWELL of Hicksville, in the county of Defiance and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improx'ement in Double-Trees; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, said drawing being a plan or top view of my invention, partly in section.
This invention consists in having atube attached to each end of tbedouble-tree by pivots, and having said tubes connected by a rod, the tubes beingprovided with springs and rods, and all arranged, as hereinafter shown and described so that an elastic connection is obtained between the draft-animals and the vehicle, and the team much relieved and the vehicle saved from much wear and tear.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents the body or main portion of the double-tree, which may be of wood and provided with iron plates a at its center, through which the bolt passes on which the double-tree works.
B B represent two metal tubes, which are provided with lateral lugs or ears a, between whichthe ends of the double-tree pass and are secured by bolts 1). Theselugs or earsaare near one end of the tubes B, and the two tubes are' connected by a rod, 0, the ends of which are pivoted to the tubes, as shown at c, the rod 0 passing through guides d, attached to the double-tree. In each tube B there is placed a spiral spring, D, through which a rod, E, passes, and these rods having buttons 6 attached to the back ends of the spring. The front ends of the tubes B are closed, the rods E passing through the center of them and bent or curved to form eyes f for the attachment of the whiffletrees.
Fromthe above description it will be seen that the springs D form a yielding connection between the draft-animals and the vehicle, and the latter will not be subjected to the jars and crncussims which ordinarily attend vehicles in coming in contact with obstructions. In starting the vehicle, also, the poweris applied gradually to the vehicle, the springs yieldi g considerably before the vehicle moves. In consequence of having the tubes attached to the doubletrees by means of the bolts b, they are allowed to retain their proper position relatively with the line of draft irrespective of the turning of the double-tree on its bolt. The rod 0 always keeps the two tubesin a position parallel with each other.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The tubes B B, attached to the ends of the double-tree A, as shown, provided with the springs D and rods E and connected by the rod U, all arranged substantiallyas and for the purpose specified.
W. DOWELL.
