UNITED STATES C. ALEXANDER MERCER, OF
PATENT OFFICE.
GRAND HAVEN, MICHIGAN.
SNOW-SCRAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,092, dated September 4, 1888.
Application filed January 20, 1838.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, G. ALEXANDER llIER- OER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Haven, in the county of Ottawa and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snow-Scrapers; andI do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawlugs, and t0 the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a view in perspective. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line at 00, Fig. 2.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
My invention relates to that class of implements designed to clear walks or other passages of snow, and the object thereof is to facilitate and lighten the labor incident to such work.
I describe my invention as follows:
A is the face of the scraper, preferably concave in form, with edges running obliquely to line of travel, and having on the upper side the guard B, which is upright. The obj ect of making the edge straight and oblique to the direction of travel is to facilitate theinsertion of the same into the snow. The said face of the scraper is securely attached to the runners O G, whereon are fastened shoes D D,
Serial No. 261,413. No model.)
having a cuttingwedge. Said shoes are preferably made of sheet-steel and fastened to the sides of said runners so that the edge of the shoe projects a little below the bottom of runner. This serves to steady the scraper and keep it in a straight line under propulsion. At the back of the scraper is the handle E, designed to be used as a grip in case the scraper is used as a shovel, one hand grasping the crossbar H, connecting the handles F F,
and the other hand taking hold by said grip E. The edge of the scraper is bent sharply over the wedge-shaped back-piece, I, and fastened thereto, forming the under plate, G.
The top crossbar, K, serves to connect the runners, and to it is also attached the top edge of scraper-face. The handles F F, with back cross-bar, H, complete the implement.
I am aware that scrapers of numerous dc signs have heretofore been in use; but
hat I desire to secure by Letters Patent of
