UNITED STATES PATENT einen.
HENRY L. PHARRIS, OF SUPEROR, NEBRASKA.
CORN-CULTIVATOR.
SPECIFICATIONAforming part of Letters Patent No. 388,912, dated September 4, 1888.
Application filed May 12, 1888. Serial No. 273,654. (No model.)
.To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, HENRY L. PHARRIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Superior, in the county of Nuckolls and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Corn-Cultivators; andI do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to corn-cultivators; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangements of its parts.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view ofthe same. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views.
My invention is described as follows:
A represents the runners, to be made of substantial wood, about two inches think, four and one half feet long, five inches high from their center to their front ends, and about twelve inches high from their center to their rear ends, and have irinly secured to their outsidcs steel knives d.
Bis a wooden platform, secured to the upper edges of said runners, is about two and onehalf by four feet in size, having an upward incline from its center, its front corners rounded and beveled underneath, so as to pass over obstructions and boat up the sides ofthe adjoining rows, and has secured to its front an iron clevis, b, by which the machine is to he drawn. C is a seat mounted on a spring, c', which is secured to said platform.
D is an iron shaft having shoulders where it passes through its bearings d. Its ends are made square, (leaving shoulders) to which are rigidly secured steel knives d by means of washers d'2 and pins di. The said knives di are slightly curved inwardly, extending back even with the rear end of the machine, and serve to cover up the grass and weeds cut by the inside knives, H.
E is a slotted lever, by which said shaft is operated. Said lever is slotted from its lower end up to c, from which it has a perforation to e', through which passes a rod, e, attached to handle c, and has its lower end made so as to t in the notches in the locking device 6*. Said lever is rigidly secured to shaft D.
F are adjustable iron braces to regulate the depth of the inside knives, H, the upper end of one being pivoted to said lever E, and the upper end of the other being pivoted to lever G. Said leverG is rigidly secured to said shaft D. The other ends of said braces are pivoted to steel knives H. Said knives are pivoted to the runners A at i, and are in the same position and move up and down with knives d when said lever E is operated. These knives H are also slightly curved inwardly, extending behind the machine, and serve to cut the weeds and grass on the inside of the ridges.
I is the wooden cover on the rear part ofthe machine, secured to the tops of said runners by nails or screws.
J is the rear end of the machine, having the V-shaped opening for the runner to run in.
A is a Vshaped runner, made to straddle young corn and level the ridges. der the Veut opening in the rear end of the machine, and is secured under the same by a chain and hooks, a". lts front end is sloped up ward and beveled so as to pass over obstructions.
This machine is for working listed corn when small, and enltivates one row of corn and boats two ridges at the same time.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The combinationfof the runners A, provided' with the knives a, platform B, mounted on the front ends of said runners, shaft D, journaled in suitable bearings mounted on said runners in the rear of said platform, levers lil and G, rigidly secured to said shaft, curved knives H, pivoted to said runners, adjustable braces F, pivoted to the levers E and G and to said knives H, curved knives d', one rigidly secured on each cnil of said shaft D, lever E being provided with a locking device, ez et, and V- shaped runner A,working under the rear end of said machine and attached to the rear edge of the platform by means of a chain and hooks, a4, all substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I atiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY L. PHARRIS.
