SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 388,887, dated September 4, 1888.

To all whom t may concern,.-

Be it known that i, CARL A. LINDNER, a citizen ol' the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and Seite of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ottomans; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.

This invention has relation to a convertible ottoman and cot, and it has for its object to provide a cheap and durable means whereby an ottoman may be readily converted into n crib without any apparent alteration of the part-s. These objects I accomplish by the means shown and illustrated in the accom panying drawings, in which-- Figure lis a perspective view of the device, showing the parts extended so that it may be niade into an ottoman and a double or single rail crib. Fig. 2 is a View ol' one ofthe locking links or arms, and Fig. 8 is a detail secv tional view of one ofthe hinge-joints.

Referring by letter to the said drawings, A indicates the inain frame, which is hollow and in outline ol' the forin ofan ottoman, such as may be at present in use, having a skirting or fringe, such as shown. This main frame is provided at one end with a l'not rest, B, which is composed of a lower fixed section, a, secured to the upper edge of one of the transverse end walls of the inain frame, and an upper hinged section, Z, which is hinged to the outer longitudinal edge of the said fixed section, as shown, so that it may forni a l'oot-i'cst. This foot rest has its hingesection provided with one or two slotted links or arins, C, which are pivoted at their upper ends to the said hinge-section, and provided with a notch in one of the walls at the opposite end, as shown at d, which is designed to engage a stud, D, in the said fixed section. By this means it will be seen that when the device is used as a crib the foot-rest may be thrown up and held in such position.

position shown in Fig. 1 for the folding and unfolding of the bed-rails, as will be presently explained. This seat has slotted con neetions notched and working over studs for holding it elevated similar to that of the hinge-section of the foot-rest.

G indicates the folding crib-rails, there being one hinged to the upper edge 0l each side wail of the main frame, the form of hinge being better shownin Fig. 3 ofthe drawings. It will be observed that these rails G are adapted to fold within the main frame or case, which latter may serve as a convenient receptacle for bedelothing and thelike,and that when turned outwardly in a vertical position the seat may be let down to close the opening ofthe case.

In sonic cases, when it is desirable, but one of the side rails or sections, G, inay be turned ont, which will not interfere with thc other in any manner whatever.

This device may be cheaply manufactured and at a cost slightly greater than that of the ottoman at present in use.

Iain aware of German Patent No. 27,306, in which a soin bath-tub is shown with a rack attached to one side ofthe inain frame, so that it may be used as a towel or clothes rack when the tub is in use.

Having described my invention, what I claiin is- 1. A convertible ottoman and crib, consist ing of a hollow frame, hinged rails adapted t0 i'old therein, a hinged seat carrying a headrest, and the hinged foot-rest secured to the frame, substantially as specified.

2. The combination, with a hollow frame, of the hinged side rails adapted to fold within the frame, a iixed `foot rest having a hinged section, a seat hinged to the main frame and carrying a head-rest, studs secured to the said frame, and slotted and notched links pivoted to the seat and foot-rest and adapted to engage the studs in the said frame, whereby the parts may be, locked in an elevated position, substantially as specified.
