SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 388,489, dated August 28, 1888.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB HEssLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Organ Attachments, which are fully set forth in the following specification, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure 1 is a side, Fig. 2 a plan, and Fig. 3 a rear, view of an organ-action provided with my improved organ attachment or octavecoupler; and Fig. 4 shows an octave-coupler wire in plan.
Like letters refer to like parts.
The object of my invention is to improve the construction ofreed and other organs whereby, when playing upon the upper bank of keys, as b, I am enabled to operate the reeds of one or more octaves above or below in said upper manual. To attain said end I construct my new device substantially as follows, namely: I extend the ordinary connecting-levers c after the first octave from either end of the instrument a sudicient distance beyond the trackerpins i", so as to form the extended levers c, and to the under side and near the outer end of said levers c, I attach a coupler-regulator, i, which is in the form of a screw-threaded shank with a cylindrical head adapted to be nicely adjusted to bear upon the arm h of the twoarmcd coupler wire 71. Said coupler-wire is made of a piece of wire bent into the form as shown, so as to form on its ends the arms h h" at proper distances apart to connect with the desired keys above or below.
Upon the board (1, serving as a foundation for the coupler, is attached a strip of wood, 6, to which is hinged the coupler-wire board e, upon which are attached the coupler-wires h. Said wires h are placed in an inclined direction merely for the purpose of having one single pattern of the form and size shown answer all requirements, and are attached by means of staples or little blocks and screws if to the board 6, so as to letthe arms h It play up and down freely.
The hinged board 6 may be raised and lowered either by means of a pull operating an eccentric, lever, or any other well-known device for such purpose; or, if preferred, it may be operated by means of a pedal under a rod 0, as here shown.
Upon the tracker-pins f are attached collars j, upon which rests the arm h of the couplerwire, and the arm it passes under the head of the adjuster or regulator From the foregoing description the operation of the mechanism is ai ready suggested sufficiently to be intelligible for one versed in the art of constructing this kind of instruments; but in order to cause said parts to act or not at will the parts 6 e are hinged together at 0", so that the board 6 may be raised and lowered by means of the rod 0, so as to bring the arm it into operative contact with the under side of the head of the regulator i, after which, when the keys b are operated so as to move the lovers 0 into the positions indicated by the broken lines, the tracker-pins i will be de- 73 pressed.
Only two coupler-wires h are shown, one at each extremity of an octave, the intermediate ones being omitted for the purpose of showing the matter with less liability to confusion.
It is self-evident that the coupler attachment may be from either end of the manual.
