Abstract

A literature holder is provided which can be easily folded from a single sheet of died cut cardboard or similar stock. The floor of the literature holder is angled in such a manner that the literature contained therein is always held in an upright position regardless of whether the holder is full or almost empty.

FIG- -13- ANGLE-IN LITERATURE HOLDER SUMMARY or THE INVENTION A need exists for a literature holder which can be mounted on a wall or placed on a counter and which always holds the literature in an upright position. Most such holders have a flat bottom or floor which is satis factory when the holder has just been filled, since the entire contents will be kept in an upright position. However with such a holder, as the contents are used, the literature will tend to slump outwardly so that the holder will present an unattractive appearance and any advertising message on the literature will not be visible to a potential customer.

In accordance with the present invention, a literature holder is provided which has a relatively small box at the bottom and an enlarged back portion which can be die cut from a single sheet of cardboard. The holder can be shipped flat and easily assembled for use.

In accordance with the present invention, the holder has a box like member at the bottom thereof and the box like member forms a base for holding the literature holder upright. However, the internal floor of the box like member slopes upwardly from the front to the rear so that as the supply of literature is exhausted, the bottoms of the literature items will gravitate toward the front of the box like member, causing the literature to tilt backwardly so that it will always be legible and present a neat appearance.

Two versions of the holder are presented, one wherein the sides of the box like member are contigu ous with the back member and another where the back member can be considerably larger than the box member. Both, however, operate on the same principle, namely of using the bottom of the box member as a counter support, while the floor of the box can tilt upwardly from the front to maintain the contents in the desired position.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS Referring now to FIGS. 1 through 6, the cardholder is generally designated 15 and has a back 17, a base 19 and a front 21. Extending from the front 21 are tabs 23 and 25 which form the sides of the completed box. The

back is connected to the base by a fold line 27 and the base is connected to the front. by fold line 29. Tabs 23 and 25 are connected to the front by-fold lines 31 and 33, respectively. Slots 35 and 37 are provided at each side of the base and extend upwardly into the back portion, and they are constricted at the edge of the cutout as at 36 and 38. It will be noted that the fold line 27 is higher than the bottom of the base 17 so that when the box is finally folded, the rear of the box willbe substantially elevated above the base: of the holder. The tabs 23 and 25 have slots 39 therein. The method of folding the device will be apparent, particularly with reference to FIG. 3. With the back 17 on a flat surface, the base, front and sides are bent upwardly on the fold lines. As bending continues, the ends of the tabs 23 and 25 are pushed through the slots 35 and 37 and when the box is fully formed, as is best seen in FIG. 1, the notches 39 will engage in the complementary slots in the back 17 to form a completed box. Also, it will be apparent from FIG. 1 as well as FIG. 5, that the base will slope upwardly toward the back so that if there are just a few cards or the like in the box, the cards will tend to tilt backwardly toward the bottom so that any message on the cards will be legible. The bottom edges of the tabs 23, the base 17 and the fold line 29 will form a solid base so that the card holder can be placed on a counter or table. Also, the device can be mounted on a wall or other vertical surface by means of a tack, adhesive tape or the like.

Another embodiment of the invention is shown in FIGS. 7 through 12 wherein the box is as wide as the back. In this embodiment, the back 40 is connected to a base 42 and a front 44 from which extend tabs 46 and 48. The parts are connected by means of the fold lines 50, 52, 54 and 56. Tabs 46 and 48 have cutouts on the lines 58 and a fold line 60 so that these tabs become locking tabs. The back 40 has tabs 62 extending therefrom which mate with the cutouts 58 when the container is folded. Referring now particularly to FIG. 9, the base 42 is folded upwardly against back 40 and the front 44 is folded upwardly with respect to the base. The tabs 46 and 48 are now rotated toward the back member 40. Tabs 62 are now inserted in the openings 58 and, as can best be seen in FIGS. 11 and 12, the tabs lock against tabs 62, forming a very secure structure.

Although it is preferred that the locking tabs be used, this is not necessary and plain slots can be used, as is shown in FIGS. 13 and 14. In these Figures, the same numbers are used for the same parts, but here tabs 46 and 48 are provided with plain slots 64. Tabs 62 and 64 are inserted in these slots, as is shown in FIG. 14. Again, it will be noted that in each instance, the bottom or base extends upwardly at an angle from the front of the box member so that any literature or the like which is contained within the holder will be maintained 'upright, even if it consists of a single card.

Although various and specific embodiments of the invention have been described, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that many variations can be made on the exact structure shown without departing from the spirit of this invention.

1. A literature holder or the like having a back member and a box member at the bottom front thereof, said literature holder being foldable from a single sheet of stiff stock, wherein said sheet comprises the following parts: a. a flat back member, b. a base member extending from adjacent the bottom of said back member, said base member being connected by a foldline to said back member, c. a front member extending from said base member and being connected to said base member by a foldline, d. tabs extending rearwardly from each edge of said front member and being connected thereto by means of a foldline, e. each of said tabs having a perforation at about the center of said tabs, f. said back member having outstanding side tabs near the bottom thereof, said tabs being of a size to be insertable in said perforations, g. the width of said front member and said back member being substantially the same, h. whereby said base member can be folded upwardly with respect to said back member to form a bottom member, said front member can be folded upwardly with respect to said bottom member, and said tabs can be inserted in said perforations to form a boxlike structure.
