MACHINE FOR HO ISTING HEAVY WEIGHTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 387,626, dated August 14, 1888.
Application filed April 12, 1888.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN VAN BUREN DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harrison, in the county of Boone and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Hoisting Heavy Weights, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in machines for hoisting heavy weights; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved machine, and Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same.
' Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the frame of my machine, having the vertical posts B B at its corners and having the transverse shaft in its lower portion. This shaft 0 is provided at one end with a crank arm, D, and at its other end with a bandpulley, E, and a ratchet-wheel, F, adjacent to said bandpulley. A gravity-pawl, G, is pivoted to the frame adjacent to the ratchet-wheel and normally engages the same to prevent backwardmovement of the transverse shaft. The frame of the machine is further provided with the central vertical posts, H, on its sides, which are extended up above the top end of the frame, and are connected by a cross-beam, I. From the under side of this cross-beam, near the ends of the same, depend two pulleys, J J, over which the hoisting-cables K pass. These hoisting-cables are secured at their lowest ends to the windlasses L L, secured rigidly upon the transverse shaft 0, and are secured at their opposite ends to the hangers M M, to which the platform Nis attached. This platform is provided in its side edges with the DOtChtS 0, which engage the vertical posts H, and through which the cables pass.
The platform may, if so desired, be provided with recesses in its corners, fitting around the vertical corner posts, B. It will thus be seen that I have provided a very simple and com- Serial No. 270,387. (No model I) pact device, and its advantages will be readily appreciated.
In operation the weight or object to be raised is placed on the platform and the crank-shaft is rotated, thereby drawing on the cables to raise the platform. When the weight has been raised to the desired height, it is removed and the pawl is disengaged from the ratchet, thereby leaving the platform free to descend to its former position. The platform is guided in its vertical movements by the notches in its sides engaging the vertical posts, and power may be communicated to the machine either by hand by means of the crank-arm or by power from any suitable motor by means of a belt running around the band-power.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The improved machine herein described and shown, comprising the frame having the vertical posts H H at the centers of the sides, the cross-beam I, connecting the upper ends of said posts, the pulleys J J, depending from the under side of said beam, near the ends of the same, the platform having recesses in its side edges engaging the posts H, the hangers secured to the platform, the transverse shaft journaled in the frame below the platform, the windlasses and ratchet-wheel on said shaft, the band-pulley on one end thereof and the crank-arm on the other end thereof, the pawl pivoted to the frame and engaging the ratchetwheel, and the cables secured to the hangers, passing thence over the pulleys J J, thence downward through the recesses in the side edges of the platform, and secured tothe windlasses, substantially as specified.
