J ENS FBEDERIK OLAF LABSEN, OF COPENHAGEN, DENMARK.
SEA-QUIETING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 387,427, dated August '7, 1888.
Application filed September 20, 1887. Serial No. 250,155. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J ENS FREDERTK OLAF LARSEN, of Copenhagen, Denmark, have invented a new and Improved SeaQuieting Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved apparatus for squirting oil onto the waves of the sea to break their force, thus quieting the sea.
The invention consistsof a canvas bag filled with an oil-absorbing material.
The invention also consists in the construction and arrangement of various parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter fullydescribed, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part-of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same.
Abag, A, of canvas or other suitable material and slightly tapering from top to bottom, is filled with an oil absorbing material, B, such as wool, linen rags, (to.
On the upper end of the bag A is secured a metallic cover, 0, provided with a screwcap, D. A similar metallic cover, E, is fastened on the lower end of the bag A and is also provided with a screw-cap, F.
On the covers G and E are formed eyes for the passage and retention of ropes G, serving to suspend the apparatus alongside the ship from the deck, so that the waves of the sea break over the apparatus.
In order to fill the apparatus, I remove either screw-cap D or F and pour oil into the canvas bag, which oil is absorbed by the material B. When the latter is fully saturated, I close the respective cover again by its screwcap.
When the apparatus is to be used, I remove the lower screwcap, F, and suspend the apparatus alongside the ship, so that the waves of the sea break against the canvas bag A, which, with the oil-absorbing material,is thus compressed, whereby the oil is forced out of I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A compressible oil-distributor comprising a flexible pervious bag open at both ends, a rigid apertured cover secured to said open ends and provided with devices for closing said apertures or openings, compressible oilabsorbent material filling the bag throughout from side to side, and the suspending rope or cable, whereby interiorcans and oil-vessels are dispensed with and a full compression of the bag by the force of the waves allowed to force the oil out through the apertures in the covers, substantially as hereinbefore shown and described.
2. An oil-distributer consisting in a bag,A, having covers 0 Esecured to its opposite open ends and provided with screw-caps D F, respectively, and opposite eyes, the compressible filling of oil-absorbent material B, and the ropes or chains G, passing freely through the upper eyes and secured to the lower eyes, whereby the upper eyes may slide freely on said ropes or suspending devices during the longitudinal compression and expansion of the bag, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JENS FREDERIK OLAF LARSEN.
