"UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. KEEDY, OF \VES'I ALEXANDRIA, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO WILLIAM CLAYTON, OF NEW LEBANON, AND JOSEPH BAUMGARDNER,
or DAYTON, OHIO.
DEVICE FOR QECURING ROOF'lNG 3LATE.
SPECIFICATION forming par'c of Letters Patent No. 387,360, dated August '7, 1888.
Application filed July 17, 1886. Renewed April 17, 1888. Serial No. 270,9E3. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN H. KEEDY, a citizen of the United Statesresiding at West Alexandria, in the county of Preble and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Securing Roofing-Slate, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to slate'-roofs; and the object of myinvention is to more securely bold new slates in position and to secure loose and broken slates to their required places.
To the above purposes my invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction and application of the fastening device, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan view of a section of slate roof with my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detached view of one of my improved fasteners. Fig. 3 is an elevation showing my improved fastener applied to the rear or under side of the slate which it is desired to secure in place.
The fastener consists of a piece of metal,A, having arms a a diverging from each other, so as to give the device the shape of a letter, V. The metal of which the device is made should be stiff and strong, but capable of being bent without fracture.
In applying the fastener a nail is driven through the angle of the device and into the space between the two underlying slates, and the ends of arms a a are then bent up over the lower edge of the slate. Thus either new or old slates may be held securely down upon the roof and broken slates may be bound firmly together. Any means of secret nailing may be used.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. As a new article of manufacture, an improved fastening device for roofingslates formed of a single piece of sheet metal and comprising two arms arranged at an inclined position with relation to each other, one end of said arms being adapted to be bent over the lower edge of a shingle and the opposite ends of the arms meeting and joining each other and lying in the plane of the arms, and having a transverse opening therethrough for the passage of a securing nail or screw, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the overlapping slates, of a V-shaped piece of metal whose angle portion is in the same plane as the arms thereof, secured upon the slates by a nail or similar device driven through its angular end andbetween the meeting edges of the under slates, the diverging arms of the piece of metal protruding below the edge of the upper slate and being bent round the same, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. KEEDY.
