UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN THOMPSON, OF LEBANON, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO HENRY A. HENDERSON, OF BOSTON, MAS' SAGHU SETTS.
PLATE OR DISH LIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 387,122, dated July 31, 1888.
Application filed June 23, 1886.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN W. THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lebanon, in the county of Grafton and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plate or Dish Lifters; and I do herebydeclare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in [O the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
To this end the invention consists in a platelifter composed of a handle to be grasped by the operator, a yoke connected at its center to the handle by a pivot, and two jaws pivotally connected to the yoke and formed to 20 grasp a plate or dish, the said yoke and jaws being adapted to be turned end for end to partially rotate the plate by the inclination and partial rotation of the handle while it is inclined, as I will now proceed to describe.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a top view of the handle of my improved plate-lifter. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of my improved plate-lifter.
The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, M represents a wooden handle of any suitable length, having at one end a slot, G, in which is secured by means 35 of a pin or rivet, H, an ear or loop, A, formed on a yoke, B. Said yoke, which is pivotally secured to the handle by the pin H, is composed of a piece of wire bent at its center to form the loop A and at its ends to form guards D D and arms E E, substantially as shown in Fig. 2.
J J represent jaws, each composed of a piece of wire bent to form the sides 2 2, the connecting portion 3, and the eyes 4 4. Said 5 eyes grasp and turn on the yoke B, the jaws being thus adapted to oscillate on the yoke.
Serial No. 206,085. (No model.\
The lower portions of the sides 2 2 are curved inwardly to adapt the portions 3 3 to project under the edges of a plate. The jaws are re tained on the yoke by the guards D D, the eyes being between said guards. The arms E E of the yoke project between thejaws, so that when the handle is turned laterally the arms will come in contact with one of thejaws and swing the same upwardly.
The operation of the device is as follows: The operator, holding the handle, engages one of the jaws with one side of a plate, turns the handle and yoke, thus causing the arms E E to strike the other jaw and swing it outwardly, so that it can engage with the opposite side of the plate. The jaws now firmly grasp the plate and the operator lifts the device with the plate, and if it is desirable to turn the plate the operator inclines the handle at an angle of about forty-five degrees, and then semi-rotates it, thus causing the yoke and jaws to turn end for end and half rotate the plate held by the jaws. The plate may then be again deposited in the oven and the jaws dis engaged therefrom. It will be seen, therefore, that a hot dish containing a pie or the like may be raised and turned half around by a quick and simple manipulation of the lifter.
I claim- A plate or dish lifter composed of the handle, the yoke connected at its center to the handle by a pivot and adapted to oscillate on said pivot independently of the handle, and the jaws pivoted to the yoke, the said yoke and jaws being adapted to be turned end for end to partially rotate the plate by theinclination and partial rotation of the handle, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN XV. THOMPSON.
