UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LESTER FRANK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
AXLE FOR TOY VEHICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 385,452, dated July 3,1888.
Application filed September 20, 1887. Serial No. 350,175. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LESTER FRANK, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Axles for Toy Vehicles: of which the following is a specification. 7 r
This invention relates to an improved axle for toy vehicles of all kinds, by which the detaching of the wheels from the axles and the loss of the same are prevented and a more durable axle for toy wagons furnished.
The invention consists of an axle for toy vehicles which is formed of two diagonally-split sections that are passed through the hub of the wheels and provided at the outer ends with enlarged heads or collars made integral therewith and connected at their inner ends by screwbolts and suitable bands, which latter also form stops for retaining the hubs of the wheels.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved axle for toy vehicles, shown with the wheels applied thereto, and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the axle drawn on a larger scale.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, A represents my improved axle for toy vehicles, which is made of two diagonallysplit sections, a a, that areprovided at their outer ends with fixed and enlarged heads or collars b I), made integral with the sections a a. The journals of the axle A, as
far as the same are within the hubs of the wheels B, are made cylindrical, while the in ner portions between the hubs can be of round, square, or other cross section. The inner ends of the split sections a a of the axle are united by suitable screw-bolts, clips, or other fastening devices, d, and by bands or collars c, which are attached to the axle A at the inner ends of the journals, said bands forming stops for retaining, in connection with the heads I) b, the wheel-hubs in position on the axle, so as to prevent the lateral shifting of the Wheels on the axle.
My improved axle is simple and durable and prevents the annoying detaching of the wheels on the playing loose of the nuts used heretofore for retaining the hubs.
Having thus described myinvention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An axle for toy vehicles composed of two diagonally split sections having enlarged heads at the outer ends and fastening devices at their inner parts, substantially as set forth.
2. An axle for toy vehicles composed of diagonally-split sections having enlarged heads at their outer ends, fastening devices at their inner parts, and fixed bands or stops on the in; ner parts of the axle adjoining the wheel-hubs for retaining the wheels in position, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my namein presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LESTER FRANK.
