5 State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fenees; and I do hereoy declare the following to loe a full, elear, and exaet description of Ehe invention, such as will enalole others skilled in the a'rt to which it;

appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accornpanying drawings, and

to letters or figures o1" reference markecl thereon, whieh form a part 0f this specification.

'Ihis invention relates to knockdown panels for portable fences and to fences constructed therewith.

The objeob of the invention is 130 so arrange the fence-panels relatively that they rnay he sei: up in oonstrueting a fenoe in true vertieal position by the labor of one man irrespective of the nature of the ground.

A further objeot of the invention is to coustruct the fence-panelsof straighb vertioal and horizontal pieces eonneoted by holt ancl nnt,

whereloy they may be readily taken apart anti packed in a s1nall compass for transporttion o1 Storage.

With these objeots in view, the invention eonsists in novel feabures of construotion and 0 combination, to behereinafter partieularly desoribed and olaimed.

In the accornpanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a secbion of fence embodying my improven1ents. Fig. 2 is a (letail 5 perspectiwa view of a modifiecl form of one of the braoe-rods.

'Ihe fence-panels are oonstructecl of vertioal en(l posts, A A, conneeted by horizontal boards B B, removably secured ab 11h eir ends hy bolts 0 and nuts b Z) to the posts A A near their upper and 1ower ends, as shown.

5 and to the outer faCes of the end posts a vertieal seriea 0f horizontal wires or runners, c, which cross the outer faoe of the verbioal stri p O. In practice the wires c may be stretched and seoured t0 the posts A A before the strip C is positioned, the inserbion of this strip between the outer faces of the horizontal boarcls B B and the wires sorving to further tighten the latter. The posts A A are respectively provided at points opposite Ehe horizontal boards B B with horizontal boltholes aa,cut parallel with tahe inner faoes of said boards, sliding bolts D billg permanently seated in the holes a 0f post A when the parts of the panel are assemloled in osition for use. These bolts are provided ab the inner end with a hearl, d, having ab least; one Ilat eclge surface to rest in contact with the inner faee of the boards B B and prevent the rotation of tl1e holt, and ab the outer end with a slot 0r aperture, d", cut parallel wibh the flat edge of the head for th e reoeption of a heaclecl or tapered nail er pin, d. Shop-blocks D are secured to tl1e inner faces of the horizontal boarcls B B ab points distanb from the posts A equal to the length of the bolts D less Ehe thickness of said post, the purpose of these stops being to preveno the withdrawal of the bollzs from the holtholes a, thns preventing their 1oss through oarelessness or aooident when the arts of the panel are in position f0r use. In setbing up bhese panels to construct a fence the first panel ma'y be supported in a verbioal position and the upper holt, D, slid through the eyes e, formed in Ehe npper ends of brace-rods E, the lower benb ends of saicl braoes resting 011 the ground ab opposite. sides of the post A an l giv ing sufiicient stabiliby to the panel 110 permib of the work progressing; or, if preferred, the lower benb ends of the braces may be driven firmly into the grouncl. The lower holt, D, is now passed through the eyes ab the upper ends of oho lower Sl10li3 hraces, D, (which may hein all respeets except lengbh sirnilar so the upper braoes, E,) anal t-he contact of the lower bent ends of these braoes D will hold the lower end of ost steady. Ihe secondpanel may now resl: flat on the ground wibh its posb A adj acent to ehe posb A of the panel just raised, when by liftsing the lower end of this seconcl panel slightly the lower holt, D, can be passed bhrough the lower bolthole, a, of said posbA. The npper encl of this second panel can DOW be raised, turning 011 the lower holt, D, as a pivot, until Ehe upper bolbhole,a, is opposite the upper holt, D, when the latter oan beslicl forward, thusseouring the seoond panel in a vertical position. The braces E und D oan now be applicd to the othcr end 0f the second pnnel, und so 011 until the fence is completed. T0 suspend the lowor ends 0f the fence-posts free from the ground, it is only nccessary to move Ehe lower bent; ends of be braces E nearer together befor0 driving them into the ground, nnd when this is d0ne it insnres an exact vertical position t0 the fence-posts as they Swing on oho upper holt, D, as a pivot until (he lower bmces am di*iven in.

In s0n10 instances 1't is dcsirnble to pcrmit; 0f Ehe assage 0f small stocksuch as sheep 01' hogsthrough a fence, bnt t0 exclude Jarger Stock one 01 the pnnels mny be lefb frce ab thc bottombeing supportcd by und swinging npon th0 upper bolts, D, and when necessary one 0f the panels nmy be qnick1y and easily removed to admit of the passnge 0f wagons or Stock where there is 110 gate.
