Be it known that 1,.'JonN B. Fnos'r, of A k ron, in the county of Summit and State of Ollio, have invented certain new and useful Inlprovelnents in Rivetingdllaehines; and `I do herebydeelare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such which it pertains to lnalle alld use the same.

Vith these objects ill view nly invention consists in certain features of construction and in combination ol parts hereinafter described, and pointed ont in the claillls.

A represents a supporting-fralne having suitable boxes, ill which isjournaled the driving-shaft l. On the one side of thehlachine (see Fie. 4) and connected with franle A project brackets j', and A2, fol.l supporting the upright shaft (j, the-two shafts being intergeared, as shown, with unter-gear. On the upper elld of' shaft C is mounted crank (Y, the Wrist of which latter is connected by a pitnlan, C2, with cross-head D, for reciprocating the lat ter on way LV. (Sec Figs, 5 and 6.) This way stl-inl waste-Loo. (No molt-l) connected with frame A and having elongated holes or slots,tllrongh which the bolts D2 pass, that secure the way to the brackets to render the way adiustablesidewise, to bringitin lille with other parts of the machine. (See Fig. 3.) To cross-head l) is adjustably secured the angie plate D, the heads of the securingbolt d operatiugin undercut slots r2' of the cross-head, to render the angle-plate adjustable lengthwise of the erosshead. A puslrbar, di, is attached to the fare of the angleplate. rllle plate is of considerable length and width, bllt corresponds in thickness with sect-ions f, and being thus thin it is supported by al stift eningbar, rl, secured along the upper edge of theplate. The section-bar F and the'seetion, f, that is to be riveted tothe bar at one end thereof are placed by hund into the machine in'position for riveting.
A quantity of sections are placed in the holder F', the latter consisting ol' a bottom and Sides supported from brackets A. On drivingshaft 'l are mounted two eccentrics, B, for operating the riveting mechanisln, and by the side of these eceelltrics are mounted two cani-disks, ll, for operatingthe dies that ellt the wire into lengths for rivets,- an eceelltrie and the adjacent disk being` usually connected together, as shown, by a stud; also, there is mounted on shal'tlla eanrdisk, l, for operating,r the feed-rolls that draw the wire illto the machine. l )isk iii has a cam-groove, b, on the faee thereof, and disks lli have caln grooves b2 on their respective faces.
The wire for the rivets is in two coils mount 'ICO ed on reels, (not showin) and is drawn from thence into the machine by means of feed-rolls E and 'E'. These rolls are intcrgeared, and are provided with two sets of grooves, e, for grasping the two wires, the grooves being located the exact. distance apart to correspond with the holes in the sections and section-bar. The trunnions of the upper roll, E, are jotlrnaledin stationary boxes, while the trunnious of the lower roll are journal'ed in bonesl E, that slide vertically in housings E, 'with flat springs e' located below the boxes, upon which the latter rest, and by the tension'ot` these springs .the necessary upward pressure is had on the lower roll for feeding the wire. provided with gear c2, that engages a drivinggear,G. The latter gear is mounted on a stud, G', the stud being secured to a lever, l2. This lever is fulcrumcd at G, the bolt or stud at the fulcrum being tightened sufticiently to hold the gear in mesh, while the opposite end of lever GZ serves as a handle by means of which the gears may be disconnected or thrown into mesh. Connected or integral with gear G is a ratchet-wheel, y. A lever, y', ofthe bell -crank l variety, is mounted on stud G', the short arm of the lever being provided with a pawl, g2,
for engaging the ratchct-wheel. The long arm of this lever is connected by rod gii with lever II. Lever 1I is fulcrumed at II', and is provided with a laterally-projccting wrist, 112, that operates in cam-groove bs of disk B3. Onthe other side of the cutting surface, opposite lip Z', is a spring, Z2, the same being secured to the die and hauing an incline, Z, as shown in FigsA and 5. and extend, respectively, through dies i', leaving a cutting-edge on these dies on the face thereof ncxtto line of dies L, the latter in their rceiprocations passing close to if not absolutely colliding with dies i', the co-operation of these two sets of -dies, forming shearing cuts that sever the wires into lengths ,for rivets. As the dies L on their upstroke come up under and against the wires protruding from dies i', the springs Z are pressed back a trie by means ol' inclincs Z", and the recoil of the springs as the wires engage the cuttingedges presses downward and toward lips Z', and hold the rivets after they are severed lirmly in place on dies L during -the balance of the upstrokc of the lat-ter, and at the cud .of the-upstroke these rivets are in position to enter the holes of the section and section-bar, the-latter lying ilatwise against dies I1'. The
latter dies are merely for steadying the section-bar, and have tapering holes '172, through which the rvetingplungcrs enter from this side.
' The riveting mechanism is as follows: Crossheads M reciprocatein ways a of frame A. As these two crossheads and the connected parts are alike, a description of one will answer for both, it being understood that the crossheads are set in line and operate from opposite sides ofthe machine. N, the opposing plungers of the respective cross-heads being in line and set at suitable distance apart to engage the two rivets 'that' secure a section. Cross-head M is connected by lilik M' with the upper end lof lever O.'
'lhel link is made in two pieces that are screwed into the respective ends of sleeve M2 with right and left handed threads, by means of which-the length of the link can be accurately adjustedby turning the sleeve. connected with frame A, and the lower end of the lever is connected by eccentric-rod`P vand eccentric-strap p with eccentric Il aforesaid. The two eccentrics are set to throw simultaneously in opposite directions,by means of which and of the connecting mechanism just described the plungers N ofthe respective eross'heads M are caused simultaneously to approach or recede from each other. Just as the two rivets for securing a section are brought up by dies L in front of the holes of the section the opposing plungers N approach each other.. The two plungcrs on the right hand l(sce Figs. l and 2) Erst strike the rivets, driving thenrinto the holes of a section in scction-bar, and just as this occurs the plungers from the left hand engage theI rivets and both oi' the rivets are simultaneously upset.` Meanwhile, as thc rivets are entering the'holes, the downstrok-e of cross-head J carries dies' L down out ofthe way of the plungers. As the plunger-s recede, the next section is moved forward,earrying with it the section-bar,as aforesaid. The next upstroke of die L brings two more rivetsinpositiomand so on unt-il the cntter-bar is eon'ipletvd, the diiterent parts of the machine operating,r a'ut m1aticallyA and bein timed to eo operate to produce the general result.

3. The combination, with cross-heads and riveting-plungcrs attached, a push-bar, and mechanism for operating the same, substantially as indicated, of a holder for the sections, said holder having a movable head adapted to move the sections toward the seetion-bar,sub stantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with feed-roll having groove for feeding two wiresand reciprocating cross-head, the ,latter having dies attached for severing the wires as they are fed by the rollers, oi' riveting-plunger for upsetting the rivets formed by the sevcring-dies, substantiall y as set fort-h. i
5. The combination, with feed-rollcrand rceiproeating cutting-dies, substantially as indi-i cated, of projecting lip and opposing springs connected with each die adjacent the cuttingsurface thereof, and arranged, substantially as indicated, for holding the rivets in place on the cutting dies', substantially asset forth.
6.
