UNITED, STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' DAVI A. WILLIAMS, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
DUMPlNG-WAGO N.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 383,930, dated June 5, 1888.
Application filed September 26, 1887. Serial No.950fi93. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID A. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumping-W'agons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters refer to corresponding parts.
My invention relates to dumping-wagons; and the object of my improvements is to provide a self-dumping wagon-box for conveying ore, lime, grave], dirt, or any other material that can be dumped through the bottom of the same, and also a box constructed so that the boards forming the bottom will not split, and
may be easily and quickly removed and replaced with new ones when worn out or broken.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top view of my dumping box; Fig. 2, a side elevation, and Fig.3 an end elevation, of the same. Fig. 4 is asectional view of one corner of my dumping-box, showing the spring for holding the lever. Fig. 5 is asectional end elevation of the box, showing the supporting-bar raised and holding the bottom boards in a horizontal position, and also showing by dotted lines the bar lowered and the boards dropped on their edges. Fig. 6 is a view of the supportingstraps, showing the roller attached to same. Fig. 7 is a sectional view of one end piece, showing a bottom board when in a horizontal position and the cast-iron end piece provided with the journal, the board shown broken off. Fig. 8 is a sectional view of the same, showing one edge of bottom board, the board being broken off, and also showing the cast-iron end piece and manner of inserting the end of the board in the same. Fig. 9 is an end view of a bottom board, showing plate attached underneath and near the center of the same; and Fig. 10 is a sectional view of the bottom board, to which is attached the supporting-bar, and the manner of attaching the same.
A are the sides of the wagoabox.
B are the end-gates, which may be inserted or removed at pleasure by loosening and tightening rods B, as in other wagon-boxes.
O are the end pieces, in which are journaled the cast-iron end pieces, D, of bottom boards, D, said cast-iron end pieces being provided with journals D.
E are the supporting-straps, provided with roller E, attached between the lower ends of the same, for supporting the iron supportingbar F, and on which the same slides. Iron supporting-bar F is placed across, underneath, and near the center from end to end of the bottom boards, D, for supporting, raising, and lowering the same. Supportingbar Fis provided with a loop, F, at one end, said loop being provided with a flattened portion of its lower edge, which rests on roller E when the supporting-bar is raised to the position shown in Figs. 3 and 5. Said bar is also provided with pin F", to prevent the same from sliding too far through the straps E.
To supporting-bar F is attached one of the bottom hoards, D, by means of attachment D*, so that when said bar is lowered the flattened portion of loop F is pushed off the roller E, and slides back on the straight'incline of said loop to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 5. Bar F is raised or lowered to drop as desired by means of hand-levtnI, which is attached to front end of rod H. Said rod H is provided with crank H atits rear extremity, to which is attached the clevis or pieces G, which are also attached to bar F. Rod H is jonrnaled in straps K, which are attached to the sides of the box, as shown in Fig. 2.
J is a spring-latch made to retain hand-1e ver I when it is desired to hold the boards D in a horizontal position, and so made that the lever may be easily and quickly detached therefrom when. it is desired to dump the load by allowing the bottom boards, D, to turn on their edges, as also shown by dotted lines in Fig. 5.
D are plates placed on the underside of and between boards D and bar F.
I am aware that dumping-wagons have heretofore been made with the bottom boards pivotedin the longitudinal line of one of their 9 F, providedwith loop F and pin F, supporting-straps E, provided with roller E, ciev is G, attached to said bar F at one extremity and to crank Hof rod H at the other extremity, and rod H, to which is attached hand-lever I, provided with spring J, as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a dumping-wagon, the combination, with bottom boards, D, provided with cast-iron end pieces, D, said end pieces being provided with journals D ofthe supportingbar F, provided with loop F and pin F the same being supported at one extremity by straps E, provided with roller E, and attached at the other extremity to hand-lever I by means of clevis G, and rod H, provided with crank H, said rod H being held in place by means of straps K, said supportingbar F also being attached -to oneof. the boards D by means of attach-
