BENJAMIN P. RICHARDSON, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
TYPE WRITER CABlNET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 383,492, dated May 29, 1888.
Application filed March 22, 18:7. Serial No. 231,886. No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
IBe it known that I, BENJAMIN P. BrennansoN, of Boston, county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Type-Writer Cabinets, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to provide a cabinet or desk with a track or tramway upon which a type-writer or other usual ma chine may be made to travel, the said track or tramway being preferably so located with relation to the desk as to permit thesaid desk to be used as a writing-desk when it is not de' sired to use the typewriter, the-said typewriter at such time being preferably pushed back from the front of the desk and concealed.
In accordance with my invention the cabi-l net or desk, which may be of any ordinary construction, is preferably provided with a movable top or cover, and below'the movable top or cover is a space to contain the typewriter. The cabinet or desk below the movable cover will preferably have secured to it an inclined partition forming the bottom of a chamber, in which may be concealed the type writer, the movable cover constituting the top of the said chamber.
The type-writer machine is supported by a carriage having rollers or wheels at its sides, which rest on or move upon an inclined track or tramway located below the movable cover, the said carriage being adapted tobe drawn up the inclined track toward the front end of the desk or cabinet when it is desired to use the type-writer, the cover of the desk at such time being moved to uncover the type-writer.
The type-writer when drawn into position to be used is locked in said position, as will be hereinafter described, the said type-writer in its locked position being firm and unaffected by slight vibrations or shocks.
The particular features in which my invention consists will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
Figure 1 is a front view of the cabinet or desk with the movable cover in place, thesaid cover being adapted to be used as an ordinary writing-desk. Fig. 2 is a section of Fig. 1 on line w :v with the cover thrown back, the typewriter carriage being in its forward position; Fig. 3, a detail ofa portion of the top of the cabinet, the cover being broken out to show one rail of the track or tramway upon which the type-writer carriage rides; Fig. 4, a detail showing part of the type-writer carriage in plan view and an under side view of the same; Fig. 5, a detail showing the type-writer carriage in side elevation; Fig. 6, a modification to be referred to. V
The cabinet or desk A herein shown is provided at its sides with drawers (4, and between the said drawers is an open space, E, for the reception of the type-writer or other 'machine. The central portion of the top of the cabinet or desk (herein shown over the space E) is made movable, and, as shown in Fig. 2, the said movable cover is made in two parts, 2 3, hinged together at 4, the part 3 being hinged at 5 to the rear of the cabinet or desk. The part 2 of the removable cover has at its front end a depending piece, a which, when the movable cover is in its normal position, (shown in Fig. 1,) rests upon a crossbar, a, se-
. cured to the side pieces, a a
The space B below the movable top or cover is preferably divided, as herein shown, by an inclined partition, b, forming a chamber, B,
between it and the movable top or cover, the said partition being inclined,as herein shown, from the front toward the rear of the cabinet or desk, as shown in Fig. 2.
Below the movable cover are sustained tracks forming a tramway upon which is mounted a carriage to support the working parts of the type-writer machine, the rails c of the said tramway being secured in suitable manner to a stationary part of the cabinet, preferably to the inner sides of the uprights aa, by screws 0, as shown in Fig. 2. Between each rail 0 and the part of the cabinet to which it is attached is a packingstrip, 0*, of rubber or other material, to deaden the vibrations which may be caused by slight shocks or jars imparted to the desk.
The carriage 0 has attached to or forming part of it side bars, d, (see Fig. 5,) each side bar supporting, near its opposite ends, hangers d forming bearings for two wheels or rollers, d d that portion of the side bar to which the hanger of the wheel d is attached being narrower than the portion to which the ICO hanger of the wheel d is secured,so that when both wheels rest upon the track or tramway the upper surface of the carriage 0 will be substantially horizontal, as shown by dotted lines, Fig. 2.
When the cabinet or desk A is to be used as a desk for writing or other purposes, the carriage c is pushed back from the front of the cabinet on the track,so as to occupy the dottedline position in Fig. 2, the cover being then in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
When it is desired to use the type-writer, the part 2 of the movable cover is folded back upon the part 3 thereof, as shown in Fig. 2, and the typewriter carriage is drawn up, the part 3 being lifted slightly to permit the carriage to pass up theinclined track.
The carriage c is prevented from rolling back on the track or tram way, as herein shown, by means of a locking shoulder or pro jection, as 6, made, preferably, by cutting or slotting the rail 0' at its upper end, as shown by dotted lines, Fig. 2, the wheel or roller 61 passing beyond and being caught by the said shoulder or projection when the carriage isin its elevated position, as shown in said Fig. 2. The carriage is further secured in its elevated position,as herein shown,by means of an arm, b,fastened to the under side of the part 3 of the movable cover, the said arm, when the carriage is in its elevated position, being in contact witha buffer, e of rubber or other material, attached to the rear of the said carriage, a buffer, a at the front end of the carriage bearing against a projection, e, of the cabinet.
The carriage is shown as provided with a handle, (2 by which to move it up the track. The top of the carriage is provided, as shown, with side and end strips, 6!, of wood or other material, to prevent the type-Writer placed thereon from becoming dislodged.
The movable cover may, if desired, be made in one piece, it having at its rear end studs or pins 6, only one of which is shown in Fig. 6, which enter groove b in the frame of the cabinet, the said groove at its front end being madeinclined, as at 8.
When it is desired to draw the type-writer into place to be used, the cover will be raised on the pins 6 as a pivot, the rear end of the said cover in its elevated position resting against a stud or block, b, projecting from the side Walls of the space B. The machine is now drawn forward, and when in its locked position, above described, the cover is drawn forward, the pins 6 traveling in the groove 6 and down the inclined groove 8, the said cover being pressed tightly against the buffer 6 I have herein shown and described my improved cabinet or desk as used with a typewriter; but it is evident that the said cabinet or desk may be used with other like machines.
I claim 1. The combination, with a cabinet or desk, of a track or tram way extending from front to rear of the said desk, and a machine-carriage supported by and adapted to be moved on the said track or tramway to bring it into position to enable the machine to be used, and thereafter, when not in use, to be moved back from the front of the desk on said track, substantially as described.
2. A cabinet or desk for type-writers, having a movable top or cover, and an inclined track or tramway extending from front to rear of the said desk below the said movable cover and upon which a type-writer is supported and adapted to be moved, substantially as described.
3. Acabinet or desk for type-writers,having a movable top or cover, and an inclined track or tramway extending from front to rear of the said desk below the said movable cover and upon which a type-writer is supported and adapted to be moved, and a locking shoulder or projection to retain the carriage in its elevated position, substantially as described.
4. A cabinet or desk for type-writers, having a movable top or cover, and an inclined track or tramway extending from front to rear of the said desk below the said movable cover and upon which a type-writer is supported and adapted to be moved, and a locking shoulder or projection to retain the carriage in its elevated position, combined with the packing 0 substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BEN J P. RICHARDSON.
