Description

(NoModeL) 0. A. SOHIEREN.

MACHINE BELTING. N0. 383,373. Patented May 22,1888.

N. PETERS. Plzoln-Lilhngrapher. Washington, I)v (L UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,

CHARLES A. SGHIEREN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.

MACHlNE-BELTING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 383,373, dated May 22, 1888.

Application filed March 24, IP88. Serial No. 268,416. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CHARLES A. ScHIEREN, a citizen of' the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of 5 New York, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Machine-Belting; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap- IO pertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to belting for machin- 1 cry.

The object of the improvement is to prevent the air-cushioning of belting upon the face of the pulley.

With this object in view my invention consists of perforating or providing air-spaces in solid belting, through which the layer of air between the belt and pulley may freely escape.

The drawing illustrates a belt, A, provided with perforations a to permit the air to escape 25 under the driving-face of the belt and between it and the pulley. These perforations may be made of any shape or in anydesiredl arrange ment upon the belt, care being taken to ar range them whereby the strength or durability of the belt will not be impaired.

The belt may be made of one, two, or more layers of leather or of rubber or canvas belting in one or more layers, and perforated in any desirable manner.

Where the belting is made of more than 35 two layers of any material, it is united in any known Way, such as endless Wire screws, rivets, cement, and the like. Any known solid material suitable for the purpose may be used by perforating it. o

What I claim as new is The herein-described belting, composed of a solid layer or layers having perforations or air-openings therethrough.

In testimony whereof I a'ffix my signaturein 5 presence of two witnesses.

CHAS. A. SOHIEREN.
