IMPROVEMENT IN FLASKhS FOR FOUNDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 38,243, dated April 2l, 1863; antedated November 7, 1861.
To @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that we, A. L. ROBINSON, M. M. DONNELLY, and D. H. KRUM, all of the city of Cincinnati, and county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flasks for Founders; and we hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
Our invention relates to the casting of bells and other similar open hollow ware; and it consists in so supporting the cast-ing at an elevation above the ground that the core may i be released therefrom, when desirable, without disturbing` the position ofthe casting itself.
In order that others duly skilled may be enabled to understand and construct and use our invention, we shall proceed to describe it in detail.
'In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved iiask, being in this instance made suitable for a bellcasting. Fig. 2 is a vertical axial section of the same.
Like letters of reference designate like parts in both the drawings.
The flask described herein consists of four parts: A the base, B the cheek, C the core, and D the cope.
The base A consists of an annular plate having near its inner edge a number ofprojecting nipples, c a, formed on its upper surface, the object of which is to furnish a key to the loam of the molder. This annular plate is elevated above the ground to any required height by a number of feet, b b b b. Upon both the outer andinner edges of plate three or more pendent lugs, c o e, are cast, in each of which lugs a hole is drilled to receive a pin, d.
The cheek B consists of a hollow truncated campanulate shell provided with a flange, e, around its lower edge, and another flange, f, around its upper edge, and having two or more handles, g, for convenience of portage. Its inner surface is studded with nipples a a, furnishing a key to the loam, and it is pierced by numerous apertures, 7L h, to give exit to the gases and steam generated during the casting. The lower flange, e, rests on the base A, and is secured in place by pins (not shown) passing through corresponding apertures in flange e and annular plate A. The core G is likewise a hollow campanulate shell pierced by numerous apertures, 7a h, and studded on Vits outside surface with numerous nipples, a u, the use of both of which has been set forth in describing the cheek B. The outer edge of base of core is slightly smaller in diameter than the inner circle of annular plate of base A, and to the lower edge are riveted three or more lugs, t' i, having a direction to the plane of the base obliquely downward and outward. Upon the lower edge, too, of said core three or more pendent lugs, j j j, are cast, corresponding to lugs o c c on base A, and, like the latter, drilled to receive a pin, d.
The cope D is a hollow hemispherical shell peirced with apertures h 7L, and studded on its inner surface with nipples a a, and prolvide'd with handles k k. A flange, Z, on the lower edge of cope corresponds withI ange f on upper edge of cheek B, and the two flanges are secured together in proper relation by pins passing through corresponding apertures in each.
m is the gate on top of cope, and n n a n are external nipples or feet to support the cope when inverted for molding, and also to support loam or other material as a funnel around the gate m during the pouring.
To use ourimproved flask the core C is elevated to its position, as. shown in section, and retained there by means of the pins d d passing through the apertures in lugs c o andjj. The loam mold being formed thereon and in the cheek B and cope D, all the pieces are placed in position, and when the metal has sufficiently cooled to solidify the core may be removed by knocking out the pins d d and prying down with a lever on the lugs t' 't'. Thus the inside of the casting may be exposed to the cooling action of the atmosphere, with full opportunity to contract without the liability to crack. The casting, when cooled,may likewise be more easily managed and moved about in cleaning up. y
The advantages of our invention are, iirst, that the bell or casting may be permitted to cool from the inside and have room to contract leased and allowed to fall from the interior of without danger of cracking, and, second7 inniaining supported by its rim resting upon creased i'zicility of manipulation and saving of the base A, substantially in the manner :nid labor.
