ARCHIBALD F. SMITH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SHOW-STAN D.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 381,437, dated April 17, 1888.
Application filed October 10, 1887. Serial No. 251,877.
To all whom it may concern.-v
Be it known that I, AROHIBALD F. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Show-Stands, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to so construct a show-stand for store-windows that it is capable of being folded into small compass, and is adjustable to suit the different goods to be displayed.
In the accompanying drawings. Figure 1 is a perspective view of the stand, showing it in position to receive the goods to be displayed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the stand, showing the same folded. Fig. 3 is a side view of the stand; and Figs. 4, 5, and (i are views showing attachments for special display.
A is the base of the stand, preferably made in cruciform shape, with l'rontand rear wings, a, and side wings, a. Hinged to the front portion of the stand, at b, is a bar, B, which is retained at different angles by a rod, 0, pivoted to the bar B at b, and hooked at the lower 0 end for adaptation to eyes 6 on the base A.
Sliding on the bar B is a second bar. D, having a T-shaped head, (I, this bar being held against the face of the bar B by cleatsff, secured to each side of the bar D, as shown in Fig. 1. The bar D has a series of notches, d, in its face, these notches being inclined slightly npward, as shown in Fig. 3, and pivoted to the upper port-ion of the bar B is a yoke, g, which acts as a retaining-pawl, and is adapted to enter any of the series of notches d, depending upon the height to which the bar D has been adjusted on the bar B, accidental displacement of the yoke being prevented by reason of the inclination of the notches.
Dry goods can be displayed on this stand by draping them over the T-head d, all of the stand being covered by the draped goods, and when the stand is not required for use it can be stowed away in very small compass by folding it as shown in Fig. 2, thus overcoming obj ections to the stands now in general use, which are bulky and incapable of being folded up.
(No model.)
When it is desired to impart a rounding or full form to the draping, wire forms h, such as shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6, may be used, these forms being pivoted to the cross-head d of the bar]) and being provided-with a pivoted brace, t. which may be adapted to one of the notches d in the bar D and retained therein by any suitable means-such, for instance, as the turnbuckle 11.
The form shown in Fig.6 has a rounded portion, h, whereby it is adapted for application to the sleeve of a coat or like article of apparel.
I claim as my invcntion 1. The combination, in a show stand, of a base, a bar pivoted thereto so that it is free to assume different angles in respect to the base, and a second bar confined laterally thereto and adjustable longitudinally on said pivoted bar, all substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the projecting bar of the stand having anotched face, the form pivoted to the upper end of the said bar, and a brace pivoted to said form and adapted to the notches in the face of the bar, all substantially as specified.
3. The combination, in ashow-stand, of the flat base portion A, with a vertical bar, B, hinged thereto, and a hooked rod, 0, pivoted to bar B and adapted to eyes on the base, with a bar, D, vertically adjustable on said bar B, the whole being so constructed as to fold flat, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. The combination, in a show-stand, of a base, a bar, B, pivoted thereto, a T-shaped bar, D, adjustable longitudinally on said pivoted bar, and a form, It, pivoted to the upper or T portion of said bar D, the whole being so constructed as to fold fiat, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed ,my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ARCHIBALD F. SMITH.
